Delhi honour killing case; one more body found

New Delhi, June 22: The mysterious murder case of an inter-caste couple in the capital took a new turn Tuesday with police finding the body of one more person in a car belonging to a relative of the victims.

Police found the body in a car belonging to a relative of Kuldeep, who along with his wife Monica was allegedly murdered on Sunday in a suspected case of honour killing.

Serial killer arrested

Ghaziabad, June 22: An alleged serial killer, suspected of murdering two persons and planning to commit another, was arrested here, police said today.

Udham allegedly killed Kalu with the help of his cousin Gulbir after he suspected him of having an illicit affair with his wife, SP (Rural) M M Beg said.

On June 19, he killed Gulbir, an eye witness to his previous murder, with the help of another relative Ravinder. Udham was arrested yesterday after Ravinder informed the police.

Usman Khawaja first Muslim in Aus Test squad

Sydney, June 22: Batsman Usman Khawaja became the first Muslim named in an Australian Test squad Tuesday as selectors announced a 14-strong party for the two-match series against Pakistan, the country of his birth.

Left-handed Khawaja, 23, admitted feeling “shocked” after being brought in for the July Tests in England, which were moved from Pakistan over security problems including the extremist attack on the Sri Lankan team bus.

Nine persons die in Orissa accident

Koraput, June 22: At least nine persons, including five women, were today killed and seven others injured when a jeep collided with a loaded truck in Orissa”s Koraput district. The mishap occurred near Doliamba, about 30 km from here, when the jeep was on its way from Renga to Semiliguda, the police said.

While seven people died on the spot, two others died of their injuries at a hospital here, they said. The injured were undergoing treatment at the district headquarters hospital here.

The condition of some of the injured was stated to be critical, the police said.

Woman killed in building collapse in Bihar

Patna, June 22: A woman was killed and few others were feared to have been trapped inside when a three-storied building collapsed in the state capital tonight.

Police said the dilapidated building caved in at Bhoothnath road locality area under Patrakar Nagar police station area.

While three children, trapped in the debris, could be rescued, the body of a woman was taken out.

Top LeT commander killed in Sopore

Srinagar, June 22: A top Lashker—e—Toiba commander and a policeman were killed and four others injured in an overnight gunbattle in Sopore town of North Kashmir, police said today.

The firefight commenced at Bhagat Mohalla, 55 kms from here, when militants opened fire on a search party of special operations group (SOG) of local police, around 9.50 AM yesterday.

A policeman identified as Ghulam Hassan was injured in the firing and was rushed to hospital where he succumbed to injuries, a police spokesman told.

Saudi women use fatwa in driving bid

Riyadh, June 22: Saudi women plan to turn a controversial fatwa (religious ruling) to their advantage and launch a campaign to achieve their long-standing demand to drive in this conservative kingdom.

If the demand is not met, the women threatened to follow through the fatwa which allows them to breastfeed their drivers and turn them into their sons.

The campaign will be launched under the slogan: “We either be allowed to drive or breastfeed foreigners,” a journalist told Media.

Separatist strike hits life in Srinagar

Srinagar, June 22: An undeclared curfew continued in the Old City areas of Srinagar Tuesday even as a separatist shutdown adversely affected life across the Kashmir Valley.

Heavy deployment of police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) barred pedestrian movement and traffic in areas falling under five police stations for a second straight day.

“The restrictions are purely preventive in nature to protect life and property of civilians and to prevent miscreants from creating a law and order problem,” a senior police officer here said.

UN reports rise in Afghan drug addicts

London, June 22: A new UN study says the number of drug addicts in Afghanistan has sharply increased in recent years, making the country a leading consumer of opium and its derivatives.

The report released Monday by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime says nearly 3 percent of Afghan adults are addicted to opiates, twice as many as five years ago, as hundreds of thousands of Afghans turn to narcotics to ease the hardships of poverty and war.

Grenade explosion in police station kills two constables

Karimnagar, June 22: A grenade exploded inside a police station at Dharmapuri in Karimnagar on Tuesday, killing two Andhra Pradesh Special Police head constables.

Prima facie, the explosion is believed to be an accident, according to police. One of the two constables, 51-year-old head constable B Sattiah was killed on the spot. The other head constable, Ch Rajappa died while being treated for his injuries at the hospital. He was 50.
Sattaiah belonged to Yousufguda in Hyderabad.

Patna, June 22: “Please relax,” Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said on Monday, replying to a flurry of questions by journalists about the return of the Kosi flood aid to Gujarat and the future of the Janata Dal (United) alliance with the BJP.

He urged people “not to have any tension” as he proceeded for the “Vishwas Yatra” in Nalanda.

Meanwhile, with Bihar BJP president C.P. Thakur stating a decision on the alliance would be announced by the party high command in two weeks, there were feelers for a rapprochement.

Blair: No need for Gaza aid convoys

London, June 22: Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair is urging charities to stop launching aid flotillas to the blockaded Gaza Strip, and use Israeli-run crossings instead.

“If we implement this policy so that the things that people are trying to bring in by flotilla you can bring in through the legitimate existing crossings, do it that way,” Blair told The Jerusalem Post in an interview on Monday.

“That is the more sensible way to do that,” he added.

‘IAEA needs to be run professionally’

Tehran, June 22: Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki says the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano should run the agency with a professional approach.

Mottaki made the remarks in the wake of Tehran’s decision to bar the entrance of two UN nuclear inspectors to Iran who had provided the agency with false information on Iran’s nuclear program.

“This is actually a bylaw notice to Amano to take care that his inspectors do not violate the regulations of the international body,” said Mottaki in a televised interview late Monday.

Mumbai, June 22: Actor Arya Babbar says he has turned down the offer to participate in reality show “Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi” because of date problems.

“It’s true that I have turned down ‘Fear factor’ offer. I am quite an adrenaline junkie, so it was tough declining such a thrilling and adventurous show, ” Said Arya.

Himesh’s A Love Issshtory further delayed

Mumbai, June 22: John Matthew Matthan’s (of Sarfarosh fame) is upset that his film A Love Issshtory has been further delayed by another six months by producers T-Series. The film is 90 per cent complete, with just a few songs left to be shot, but officials of T Series want that to be canned only after the monsoons.

The film, starring Himesh Reshammiya, was originally scheduled to be released before the dud Karzzz. But it got delayed and now T Series is busy working on Kajra Re.

Israel rejects suggestion of releasing terrorist for soldier

Jerusalem, June 22: He is against freeing convicted terrorists into the West Bank in exchange for captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, Israel’s prime minister said on Monday.

The Jerusalem Post has reported that Binyamin Netanyahu voiced his opposition to the idea to the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.

Netanyahu told the committee, “We can’t release dangerous terrorists to places in the West Bank, where they can kill Israeli citizens.”

He further said that Israel continues to be open to any plans for the soldier’s return.

NATO says 4 troops die in Afghan copter crash

Kabul, June 22: A military helicopter crashed during an early morning operation in southern Afghanistan on Monday, killing three Australian commandos and an American service member, officials said.

The crash was being investigated but there were no indications of enemy involvement, NATO said in a statement.

The Australian government said three of the dead were Australians, and US Lt. Col. Joseph T. Breasseale said the fourth service member killed was American.

Australian Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston said seven other Australian soldiers were wounded, two of them badly.
