Boeing finds problem in 787 Dreamliners’ tail

Washington, June 26: The delivery of Boeing 787 Dreamliners may be further delayed with the company deciding to inspect the entire fleet after finding assembly problems in the tail area on some of the 23 completed planes.

Air India and Jet Airways have ordered 27 and 10 of the planes, already more than two and a half years late to market. In all 866 Dreamliners have been ordered by 57 customers worldwide.

For Boeing, the latest issue with the new plane puts additional pressure on the company’s ambitious flight-test schedule, the Wall Street Journal reported Saturday.

India’s first Super Hercules airlifter dons IAF colours

Washington, June 26: The first of India’s six C-130J Super Hercules airlifters, considered the world’s most advanced transport aircraft, has emerged from the paint shop in Indian Air Force colours, roughly six months before its scheduled delivery.

Purchased from the US in a $1 billion deal, the tactical transport “aircraft now enters flight test in preparation for delivery at the end of the year,” its manufacturer Lockheed Martin said releasing an image of the plane in IAF colours at its Marietta plant in Georgia

Student can ask condom from school nurse

Provincetown, June 26: Schools in Provincetown, Massachusetts, wanted to provide protection to its students, so the school district set a policy to provide condoms to any student who requested them from the school nurse.

Though this is not an unheard-of policy in the state, according to a June 24 article in the Boston Globe, there were a pair of startling departures from how such programs are usually handled: the wishes of parents would be set aside–and there was no lower age limit on students who could request condoms.

Websites to face anti-Islam checks

Islamabad, June 26: Pakistan will start monitoring seven major websites, including Google, Yahoo and Amazon, for sacrilegious content, while blocking links to 17 lesser-known sites it deems offensive to Muslims, including pages within YouTube.

The move, which came in response to a court order, follows last month’s temporary ban on Facebook following a competition to draw the Prophet Mohamed.

Kamasutra model commits suicide

Mumbai, June 26: Model Viveka Babajee, who shot to fame with the Kamasutra condom advertisement in the 1990s, committed suicide in her flat in Continental Building in Bandra (west) on Friday night. Her body was found hanging from the ceiling fan in the hall, police said.

Confirming the suicide, Additional Commissioner of Police (Western Region) Amitabh Gupta said the reason behind Viveka taking the extreme step was not known and police were investigating. According to police, it may be due to a failed personal relationship.

British PM wants troops out of Afghan

London, June 26: BRITAIN’S Prime Minister David Cameron says he wants troops home from Afghanistan within five years, conceding the war-torn country will not be “perfect” before that happens.

While he would not outline a “strict timetable” for a withdrawal, Mr Cameron said he wanted to see British troops leave before the next British general elections due by 2015.

“We can’t be there for another five years, having been there for nine years already,” he told Sky News television, on the sidelines of a G8 summit in Canada.

Muslims don’t need quota: Cleric

Lucknow, June 26: A Shia cleric and vice-president of All India Muslim Personal Law Board Maulana Kalbe Sadiq created a flutter when he announced at a public forum that Muslims did not need reservation.

At a majlis on Sunday in Bara Banki he said, ‘‘Koi bhi qaum baisakhion ke sahare hamesha nahin chal sakti…usme jaan paida karni hogi (No community can move forward on crutches…we need to instil life into it).’’ And, this can be done by introducing Muslims to modern education, he said.

Pak, Afghan focus on terrorism

Islamabad, June 26: Talks held during Afghan Foreign Minister Zalmai Rassoul’s vist to Pakistan focused especially on the threat posed by terrorism, bilateral cooperation in political and economic fields and regional and international issues of common concern, the Foreign Office said on Friday.

According to a joint statement issued at the end of Rassoul’s visit to Pakistan, Pakistani and Afghan officials agreed not to allow their territories to be used against each other’s interests.

New Delhi, June 26: Re-inducted into the BJP after a 10-month exile, senior leader Jaswant Singh said he was happy and relieved to be back in the party that he had served since it was founded. However, he maintained that his views on Jinnah remained unchanged.

Heritage plaque unveiled for Paigah Palace

Hyderabad, June 25: A plaque highlighting the historical importance of Paigah Palace (which at present houses the office of the U.S. Consulate) was inaugurated by US Consul General Cornelis M Keur on Thursday.

The building has been listed as a Heritage Building by the state government in 1998. It was constructed in 1896 by Nawab Iqbal-ud-Doula (Sir Vicar-ul-Umra II), one of the Paigah nobles and the prime minister during the reign of the sixth Nizam, Mir Mohbub Ali Khan. The building became the office of the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority in 1982.
