An Egyptian woman’s crusade against divorce

Cairo, June 28: In traditional Egyptian society where women are blamed for divorces, a young divorcee has launched an online radio station to help out fellow women overcome the stigma of divorce and come out stronger.

Inspired by her own experience of divorce, Mahasen Saber, 31, a mother to a five-year-old boy, launched the Motalakat Radio for divorced women this year, according to a report in the Al-Ahram weekly newspaper.

Iran talks of plans to counter sanctions

Tehran, June 28: A senior Iranian lawmaker has lashed out at the recently-imposed sanctions against Iran, saying authorities in Tehran have devised certain plans to counter such punitive measures.

Speaking to ISNA on Sunday, Spokesman for the Iranian Parliament’s (Majlis) National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Kazem Jalali criticized the West for imposing sanctions on the Islamic Republic despite making claims of favoring diplomatic engagement.

Abhi’s offered Rs 7 crores for next!

Mumbai, June 28: Filmmaker Mani Ratnam’s ‘Raavan’ may have bombed at the Box Office, but the flick surely seems to have done enough good for lead hero Abhishek Bachchan’s career.

According to the latest buzz, Abhi has reportedly been offered Rs 7 crores for an upcoming film by Raj Kumar Santoshi. Grapevine has it that Santoshi’s film is set to have not just Abhishek, but also Amitabh and Aishwarya in pivotal roles.

And believe it or not, but the fee allocated for Abhi alone is a whopping Rs 7 crores.

Five killed, four injured in separate road mishaps

Sitapur, June 28: Five persons, including a woman and a child, were killed and four others injured in two separate accidents in the city, police said today. Four persons Rajinder (35), Kitabun (4), and two others were killed when an over speeding jeep overturned near village Bhusaila in Talgaon police circle here yesterday.

In another accident, a car collided with a truck near Hempur crossing in Imalia Sultanpur area killing a two-year-old child on the spot, while injuring four others. The injured were rushed to a hospital, where their condition was stated to be stable.

Sopore tense as mob protests youth’s killing

Srinagar, June 28: Thousands of people Monday defied strict curfew restrictions in Kashmir’s Sopore town where they took to the streets carrying the body of a 23-year old youth for burial, a day after he was killed in firing by the security forces.

Security forces fired warning shots and tear gas shells, and resorted to repeated baton charges to disperse the mob carrying the body of Bilal Ahmad Wani to the main chowk in the town.

A senior police officer described the situation in the town as highly tense. He said the body of the youth was later buried.

Pakistan must act against terror: PM to Obama

Toronto, June 28: India today told the US that Pakistan should realise the importance of the disclosures made by LeT operative David Headley and take action against terrorism emanating from its soil directed towards it.

India’s concerns were conveyed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to US President Barack Obama during a half-hour meeting between them on the sidelines of the G-20 Summit here.

CIA defends Blackwater contract

Washington, June 28: The CIA has defended its new controversial 100-million dollar contract with a secretive security firm, formerly known as ‘Blackwater Worldwide.’

The CIA inked the deal after the US State Department awarded Xe last week with a security services contract worth some $120 million for work in Afghanistan.

Under the contract, the company will provide “protective security services” at US consulates in the Afghan cities of Herat and Mazar-i-Sharif.

A 6-yr-old terror suspect

Washington, June 28: The US Homeland Security Department has put a six-year-old Indian origin American girl on the “no fly” list on the grounds of having suspected ties to terrorists.

Alyssa Thomas, 6, is under the spotlight of the US Government, and her family recently came to know that she is on the “no fly” list maintained by the US Homeland Security.

“We were, like, puzzled. I’m like, well, she’s kinda six-years-old and this is not something that should be typical,” said Dr. Santhosh Thomas.

Israel health ministry accused of racism

Jerusalem, June 28: Israeli Deputy Health Minister Ya’acov Litzman has come under fire for delaying funds to an Arab-run facility and his racist comments against the Palestinian man.

The Israel Medical Association (IMA) charged Litzman on Sunday with holding up ministry budgets from Nahariya’s Western Galilee Hospital because its director general is an Israeli Arab.

Litzman had recently accused Dr. Mas’ad Barhoom, the only Arab director to run an Israeli hospital, of not allowing his Jewish employees to pray in the hospital, pointedly noting that Barhoom “isn’t a Jew.”

Government encouraging vulgarity: Jama’at

Ganderbal, June 28: The Naib Ameer-e-Jama’at, Nazir Ahmad Raina today said the government was allegedly encouraging vulgarity.

Addressing near about 14,000 people who attended the annual Ijtima (convention) of Jama’at-e-Islami at Margund Kangan, he said the Islam was a complete way of life.

The party general secretary, Dr Fayaz Hamid said Jama’at’s stand on Kashmir issue had never changed. “It should be solved either by holding plebiscite or implementing the UN resolutions.”

700,000 Observing Itikaf across the Iran

Tehran, June 28: Hojat-ol-Islam Hossein Ebrahimi said that the number of those observing Itikaf in mosques in Tehran province shows a 15 percent rise compared to previous year.

He said in some provinces the demand for attending the religious ceremony exceeded the available spaces in mosques.

Hojat-ol-Islam Ebrahimi noted that Itikaf should be observed in a mosque at least for three consecutive days.

Since the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, more and more people, especially youths, participate in this great event, he said.

Mobile prayer rugs for Saudi football fans

Riyadh, June 28: Saudi religious police are laying prayer rugs in the streets to encourage football fans not to miss their prayers when watching World Cup matches, news reports said.

Small rugs have been rolled out at specially assigned places in Tahlia Street, one of Riyadh’s main thoroughfares, where football lovers gather to watch World Cup matches on giant television screens.

Sabq news website reported that most people supported the idea, which will continue as long as World Cup matches clash with prayer times in areas where mosques are not at hand.

Sex change surgery held successfully

Jabalpur, June 28: A sex change surgery was conducted succesfully on a 30-year-old man probably for the first time in Madhya Pradesh by city-based surgeons.

A sex change operation was conducted on the man while converting him into a woman in a private hospital last week. The surgery took nearly three-and-half-hours.

”The person was a trans-sexual since childhood, means he behaved like a woman while having physical characterics of a male,” Plastic Surgeon Dr K S Sethi said.

He said the person had approached the physicians about six month back and was first given harmonal treatment.

John wants to produce film on football

Mumbai, June 28: John Abraham, who is passionate about football, now wants to produce a film on the sport. The actor is keen about it even though, he is yet to set up a production house.

The actor had even played the lead role of a footballer in De Dana Dhan Goal, a film on the sport and set in England. John is excited about exploring emotions such as angst and jealousy with respect to sports.

Yuva Rajyam secretary dies in bike crash in Nellore

Nellore, June 28: Secretary of Yuva Rajyam, the Praja Rajyam Party’s youth wing, Pathan Nissar Khan on Sunday breathed his last in hospital while undergoing treatment.

Nissar Khan had been shifted to the hospital following a road accident which occurred at Manobolu in Nellore district late on Saturday night.

According to reports coming, Nissar Khan was travelling on a two-wheeler along with his friend towards Gudur when a buffalo came in front of his motorcycle. He lost control over his vehicle and crashed.

KTR, Harish Rao feud reason for by-poll postponement: Ponnam

Karimnagar, June 28 Congress leader Ponnam Prabhakar on Sunday said that the internal squabbling between Telangana Rashtra Samithi leaders was the reason of the postponement of the Sircilla and Vemulawada Assembly by-elections.

Talking to media persons, Mr Prabhakar said that with more and more powers being given to KTR by the party, Harish Rao has become jealous. He said that it was due to this jealousy that Harish Rao had provided wrong information to the Election Commission, leading to the postponement of the by-polls.

Hyderabad, June 28: Khammam Member of Parliament from Telugu Desam Party Nama Nageshwar Rao on Sunday criticised Telangana Rashtra Samithi chief K Chandrasekhar Rao for not raising his voice in Parliament.

The TDP leader said that KCR in unfit to continue as an MP since he has not raised the issues of people who had elected him, in Parliament.

Mr Nageshwar Rao said that KCR claims to fight for Telangana but had not even once raised the issue of separate statehood in Parliament. He said that it would be better if the TRS chief resigns from his post.
