Rahul picks his team for UP polls

Lucknow, May 31: Rahul Gandhi, it appears, has little confidence in the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee ( UPCC) going by his decision to deploy a parallel team to assist him in the 2012 assembly polls.

The Congress general secretary has chosen a 10- member team of his trusted men drawn from across the country to help him prepare a panel of potential candidates to take on the might of Mayawati.

Normally, the state unit of the party recommends names of potential candidates.

11names cleared for NAC

New Delhi, May 31: The Prime Minister’s Office on Sunday finalised the names of 11 members of the National Advisory Council, the consultative body chaired by Congress president Sonia Gandhi that is intended to serve as an interface between the government and civil society and as the laboratory for inclusive economic and social legislation and policy initiatives.

Ravishankar escapes unhurt as gunman fires at convoy

Bangalore: Art of Living founder and spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravishankar escaped unhurt today when an unidentified gunman shot at his convoy at the ashram here as he was returning after delivering a discourse, an ashram official said.

One of his devotees sustained a minor injury on the thigh with the bullet brushing past, ashram spokesperson Charu said.

The incident took place around 6.15 PM when Ravishankar was returning to his kutir by car after addressing a gathering at the satsang, she told PTI.

Polls: Support for Japanese PM falls to 17 percent

Tokyo, May 31: Public support for Japan’s embattled prime minister fell to 17 percent amid rising calls for his resignation over his broken campaign promise to move a U.S. military base off a southern island, polls showed Monday.

The dismal approval rating came a day after a small party opted to leave Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama’s three-party coalition in protest over his decision Friday to keep the U.S. base on Okinawa, weakening the alliance ahead of a July election.

Army orders inquiry into ‘fake encounter’

New Delhi, May 31:The Army on Sunday ordered a high-level inquiry into the ‘fake encounter’ in the Machil sector of Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir on April 30, in which three youths from Rafiabad were killed.

A Major has been named in the police report, informed sources said.

A defence spokesman said the Army ordered the probe after receiving a preliminary report from the police on Saturday.

About 45 per cent turnout recorded till noon in Municipal polls

Soren quits as Jharkhand chief minister

Jharkhand, May 31: Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren resigned from his post late Sunday, a day before he was to prove his majority in the state assembly.

Soren, who heads the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), met state Governor M.O.H. Farook and submitted his resignation Sunday evening.

A JMM source said the party leaders met for the second time in the day at 6 p.m. to chalk out a strategy. Sources said that eight of the JMM’s 18 legislators refused to face the trust vote Monday.

Banglore, May 31: Art of Living founder and spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar escaped unhurt today when an unidentified gunman shot at his convoy at the ashram here as he was returning after delivering a discourse, an ashram official said.

One of his devotees sustained a minor injury on the thigh with the bullet brushing past, ashram spokesperson Charu said.

The incident took place around 6.15 PM when Ravi Shankar was returning to his ‘Kutir’ by car after addressing a gathering at the ‘satsang’, she told PTI.

Jagan leaves for Delhi as high command asks him to stop Yatra

Hyderabad, May 30: Congress MP Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, who has invited the displeasure of high command over his ‘Odarpu Yatra’, on Sunday left for New Delhi where he is expected to meet top party leaders.

Jagan, who has defied the high command’s directive not to undertake the yatra, is expected to meet senior leaders over the issue, sources said.

Congress Core Committee member and Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee had made it clear yesterday that Jagan should call off his yatra as per the high command’s directive.

Hookahs more dangerous than cigarettes

New Delhi, May 30: Smoking hookah is increasingly becoming popular among the youth but its use is more harmful than cigarette, a medical expert warned Sunday.

“Many young people seem to believe that hookahs and other water pipes are safer than cigarettes, but its use is more detrimental to a person’s health than smoking cigarettes,” said Purushottam Lal, chairman and chief interventional cardiologist of Metro Hospitals and Heart Institute.

According to a survey by the Metro Hospital, hookah cafes have become a trend in the capital and one in four youth uses it.

Four of a family murdered in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, May 30: A liquor trader, his wife and two minor sons were found murdered in their home in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut city Sunday, police said.

Narendra Kumar, 45, was found dead Sunday evening along with his wife Sangeeta, 43, and sons Anant, 15, and Chetan, 9, in their Akshat Apartments flat in Lal Kurti area, some 400 km from here.

“Prima facie it appears that the assailants killed the four with a sharp edged weapon. We are still to ascertain any exact reason behind the killings,” Inspector Naresh Verma told reporters in Meerut.

Mulayam’s brother, son framed me, alleges Amar Singh

New Delhi, May 30: Expelled Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh Sunday alleged that party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav’s brother and son played a key role in framing him in the Rs.500-crore money laundering case Uttar Pradesh Police filed against him last year.

Gunman fires at Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s convoy, one injured

Bangalore, May 30: An unidentified gunman fired at the Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s convoy here Sunday evening, injuring one of the devotees.

According to a press statement issued by the Art of Living International Centre, the unidentified gunman opened fire as Sri Sri Ravi Shankar left the venue after delivering a discourse at his ashram.

“While leaving from public satsang (discourse) this evening in Bangalore, an unidentified gunman shot at Sri Sri’s convoy. It hit one the devotee’s thigh, causing a minor injury,” the statement said.

India’s sugarcane output may rise by 10 pc this yr

New Delhi, May 30: Sugarcane production is likely to increase by 10 per cent to over 300 million tonnes in the 2010-11 crop year on improved cane acreage and better yield, a cooperative sugar body said.

In the 2009-10 crop year, sugarcane production stood at 274 million tonnes. Sugarcane is planted round the year and the crop is harvested during October-September.

Shahzad got crash course from thugs in Pak: report

New York, May 30: Pakistani-American Faisal Shahzad, arrested for the failed Times Square bombing, got a “crash course” in killing from thugs in Pakistan’s two top terror towns — Miran Shah and Mir Ali, according to a media report here.

Shahzad, the 30-year-old son of a retired Pakistani Air Vice Marshal, had recently spent time in the towns most associated with Al-Qaeda and its Taliban allies, a senior military officer in Islamabad told the New York Daily News.

New Delhi, May 30: Ahluwalia Contracts India today said it is looking for acquisition or tie-up with a specialised construction firm to help it become an integrated urban infrastructure company.

The acquisition will enable the construction company to execute value-added construction projects, like developing multi-level parking and building concrete roads, a company official said.

“We are aspiring for inorganic growth and is looking at acquisition or strategic tie-up with specialised construction companies,” company executive director SK Sachdeva said.

Thunderstorm: Maya announces compensation

Lucknow, May 30: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has announced an ex-gratia of Rupees one lakh to the next of kin of those killed in thunderstorm in Mathura district, an official spokesman said here today.

“The CM has directed the officers to provide Rupees one lakh each to the dependents of five persons, who died due to lightning in Govardhan and Chhata teshsils in Mathura yesterday,” he said.

The chief minister has also directed officials to provide proper treatment to those injured in such incidents, while conveying her condolences and deep sympathies to the bereaved families.

BCCI to choose from Airtel,Sahara for sponsorship

Mumbai, May 30: Industrial conglomerate Sahara India and telecom giants Bharti Airtel are locked in a two-way race to bag the sponsorship rights for the Indian cricket team, which would be announced by the BCCI here tomorrow.

Only these two firms are left in the fray, although four others including electronic giants Videocon had also purchased the form.

Sahara India and Airtel submitted the security deposit of Rs 50 crore along with the form at the end of deadline while the other firms excused themselves from the race due to steep base price of Rs 2.5 crore per match.
