Eight Somalians remanded to judicial custody

Kochi, May 31: Eight Somalians, who were taken into custody by Indian Navy off Kavaratti coast, have been remanded to 14 days judicial custody. The Somalians were produced before the Judicial First Class magistrate here yesterday and later shifted to the sub-jail at Mattancherry, police said.

Police said they would seek custody of the Somalians for interrogation. CBI, Intelligence Bureau, Navy and Coastguard would jointly interrogate the Somalians, they said.

Jolie attracted to ‘vulnerable’ characters

London, May 31: Actress Angelina Jolie says she is attracted to “vulnerable” characters and that she can’t think of playing fantasy roles like Cinderella.

“I play women that I think are vulnerable. Like in ‘Girl, Interrupted’, I have a huge breakdown – very emotional, very unhappy, but she’s considered psychotic and a scary, tough woman,” contactmusic.com quoted her as saying.

Sajid Nadiadwala de-boards Salman’s private flight

Mumbai, May 31: A chartered flight carrying Salman Khan’s friends and family including Arbaaz, Sohail and David Dhawan to Dubai on Thursday for his Being Human concert had to be delayed by almost an hour, as Sajid Nadiadwala suddenly fell ill.

Apparently, there was alarm and panic on-board. A doctor had to be rushed to the flight. On examining him, the doctor announced that Sajid was not fit to travel and was advised to de-board. Salman’s flight had to leave without Sajid.

Indian jailed in Australia for sexually abusing children

Melbourne, May 31: An Indian salesman in Australia was sentenced to jail Monday after being convicted of sexually assaulting children and possessing child pornography.

Mujahed Ur-Rahman, 29, pleaded guilty to sexually penetrating a child aged under 16 and two other charges relating to separate incidences on another victim, committing an indecent act on a child aged under 16 and possessing child pornography.

The Victorian County Court sentenced Mujahed to three years and nine months’ jail, with a non-parole period of two years and three months.

Hizb commander shot dead by associate in Doda

Srinagar, May 31: In a case of rivalry between two top militants, a terrorist belonging to Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) shot dead his commander during a shootout in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir today, police said.

Chota Bashir, district commander of the outfit in Doda and his newly recruited associate Abdul Lateef exchanged fire in Lolore area this morning, in which the latter was killed, they said.

Youth murdered in Udhampur

Srinagar, May 31: A youth was today murdered by unidentified assailants who attacked him with sharp-edged weapons in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

24-year-old Kuldeep Kumar was attacked by a group of 3 to 4 armed men at Talpad village in Udhampur district at 6 am today, they said.

The assailants escaped after stabbing him, police said, adding the victim was taken to a hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. A case has been registered and investigation has started into the incident, they said.

No relief for Rathore, case deferred to June 1

Chandigarh, May 31: Disgraced former Haryana DGP SPS Rathore, sentenced to an 18-month prison term by a court here in a molestation case, today failed to get any relief as the Punjab and Haryana High Court deferred the hearing on his revision petition seeking bail till tomorrow.

68-year-old Rathore’s lawyer wife Abha Rathore had filed the review petition on his behalf in the High Court on May 26 seeking bail, a day after he was sentenced and lodged in the high-security Burail jail here.

The single vacation bench of Justice Ajay Tewari deferred the case till tomorrow.

Gold futures down on profit taking, strong dollar

New Delhi, May 31: Gold futures traded Rs. 71, or 0.38 per cent lower at Rs. 18,394 per ten gram, as traders booked profits amid higher dollar.

Weak trend in the other Asian markets also put some pressure.

All the three running contracts -June, August and October-were trading in negative zone with losses up to 0.38 per cent.

At the Multi Commodity Exchange, gold for delivery in June contract traded Rs. 71, or 0.38 per cent down at Rs. 18,394 per ten gram, with a turnover of 968 lots. It ended 0.20 per cent higher at Rs. 18,465 per ten gram in the previous session.

Muslim Students protest at EAMCET Centre

Hyderabad, May 30: (Siasat News) Muslim girls student were made to remove their Burqa and boys students were also forced to unwear their skull cap (Tupi), before they were allowed to attend the EAMCET at Vijaya Rural Engineering College, Nizamabad.

The S.I.O and some other muslim leaders organized a Dharna (Sit in) protest against the management of the college. As usual police lathi charged the peacefull protesters but the principal of the college rose to the occasion and his intervention pacified the agitating students.

Economy grows at 8.6 per cent in Q4

New Delhi, May 31: A steady agricultural sector and a robust manufacturing sector drove GDP to 7.4 per cent in 2009-10, better than the February projection of 7.2.

Driven by a robust performance by the manufacturing sector, the Indian economy grew by 8.4 per cent in the last quarter of 2009-10, pushing up the overall growth to a better-than expected 7.4 per cent.

The manufacturing sector grew by 16.3 per cent in the fourth quarter (January-March 2009-10) and 10.8 per cent in the fiscal.

Mumbai, May 31: Poverty led the unemployed men to put themself on sale. Residents left red-faced after posters advertising ‘male companionship’  spring up by the dozen on upmarket Carter Road and Nargis Dutt Road.

Residential buildings and bungalows on upmarket Carter Road and Nargis Dutt Road in Bandra, including those of some Bollywood stars, have a never-seen-before kind of poster adorning their walls. These posters — simple printouts on white paper — advertise ‘companions for lonely middle-aged women’, or, put simply, gigolos, for Rs 5,000 per hour.

Henin ousts Sharapova at French Open

Paris, May 31: Four-time champion Justine Henin made a triumphant return to form as the Belgian beat Russian rival Maria Sharapova 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 on Sunday to reach the fourth round of the French Open tennis.

Henin, a former world number one and darling of the Roland Garros crowds, was playing her favourite event for the first time since 2008 when she announced a retirement from the game that lasted only 20 months. Between them, 12th seed Sharapova, winner of the Strasbourg title last weekend, and Henin share ten Grand Slam titles, with Henin winning seven including her Paris quartet.

Man kills self after family objects to love affair in Mumbai

Mumbai, May 31: A 20-year-old marine engineer committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his Andheri residence on Saturday night.

According to the police, Vinayak Hotkar, who worked in the Merchant Navy, was in love with a older, married woman. However, his parents objected to the affair. “He met the woman through a common friend,” said a senior officer from DN Nagar police station.

At the time of the incident, Hotkar was alone at home.

The police have recovered a suicide note. “In the note, he asked his parents to inform his lady love,” another officer said.

Four soldiers killed by rebels in Philippines

Manila, May 31: Four soldiers were killed in an attack by communist rebels in the eastern Philippines, an army spokesman said Monday.

The troops were ambushed Sunday in Presentacion town in Camarines Sur province, 255 km south-east of Manila, Major Harold Cabunoc said.

He said the rebels threw grenades and opened fire at the soldiers as they were negotiating steep terrain, killing four and wounding three.

Cabunoc said the troops were pursuing a group of guerrillas who had earlier killed a soldier in an attack on an army outpost guarding a government road project.

Mumbai, May 31: If it’s a Shahid Kapoor film, there must be some heavy duty dancing. Or. so it seems, going by the way the music in his father’s directorial debut Mausam, has been moulded to accommodate Shahid’s dancing shoes.

According to a source very close to the project, the film’s aesthetically-inclined director Pankaj Kapoor had initially planned an exclusive heavily melody-based music score based only ragas.

In fact, Pritam Chakraborty, who”s doing the music score in Mausam, has just recorded a raga-based love melody in the voice of Rashid Khan.
