Woman dies after consuming poison

Panaji, May 31: A 28-year-old woman, who had allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison a fortnight ago has died, police said today.

Nadia Torreado, a resident of Loutolim, 40 kms from here, died yesterday at a Chennai hospital.

Superintendent of Police (South Goa), Allan D’Sa, said that the inquiry into the death is already going on.

“A police team was sent to Mumbai and thereafter to Chennai when she was admitted. We are already investigating the matter,” he said.

Though police registered a case of suicide, social activists have alleged that she was murdered.

54 children hurt as bus falls into ravine in Pakistan

Islamabad, May 31: Fifty—four school children were injured, five critically, when their bus plunged into a ravine on Monday, police said.

The students, aged between 11 and 16, were on a recreational trip when the accident occurred on a hillside road near Wovla—Moch in Chitral district of Khyber—Pakhtoonkhwa, formerly known as the North West Frontier Province.

Police and rescue teams immediately reached the spot and shifted the injured children to the district hospital, where the condition of five was stated to be critical.

Rocket attack on Turkish base kills 6 soldiers

Ankara, May 31: Six soldiers were killed overnight when armed militants fired rockets on a Navy base in the southern Turkish city of Iskenderun, Anatolia news agency reported.

Seven soldiers were also wounded in the attack that targeted a military vehicle carrying troops for the changing of the guard, the report said.

Three of them were in a critical condition and were taken to a military hospital in the capital Ankara.

Floods again hit Lakhimpur, 25,000 affected

Lakhimpur (Assam), May 31: Assam’s flood prone Lakhimpur district was today hit by the third wave of floods following heavy rainfall in the foothills of the Himalayas in Arunachal Pradesh affecting more than 25,000 people.

The rising waters of Ranganadi and Singora rivers, tributaries of the Brahmaputra, have inundated 50 villages under Naoboicha and Lakhimpur Revenue circles affecting more than 25,000 villagers, officials said.

The flood waters have washed away a section of National Highway 52 disrupting road communication.

3 of family injured in house collapse in Kargil

Srinagar, May 31: Three members of a family were injured when their house collapsed in Zanaskar due to heavy rains, official sources said here today.

They said a house collapsed due to rains at village Ating Zanaskar resulting in injuries to three member of a family.

However, other neighbours immediately admitted in a hospital at Padam, they said.

Over 10 dead as Israel storms Gaza aid boat: Army

Gaza, May 31: More than 10 passengers died on Monday when Israeli forces stormed a boat carrying pro-Palestinian activists bound for Gaza, the Israeli Army said, sparking fury from Turkey and Palestinian leaders.

The bloody ending to the high-profile mission to deliver supplies to Gaza came on the eve of a meeting in Washington between President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“From an initial report, more than 10 passengers were killed,” an Israeli Army spokesman said in what was the first official confirmation of deaths on board the convoy.

Terror threat looms over FIFA World Cup

Johannesburg, May 31: South Africa, which is set to host 2010 FIFA World Cup, faces high risk of a terror attack during the mega football event beginning June 11, according to a report.

“Pakistani and Somali militants are running terror training camps in neighbouring Mozambique and that cells may already have moved into South Africa to plan World Cup attacks,” ‘Sunday Times’ weekly quoted Ronald Sandee, director of terror research group NEFA Foundation, as saying.

“I believe there is an 80 per cent chance of an attack,” he said.

72-hr bandh paralyses normal life in Upper Assam

Guwahati, May 31: Normal life was paralysed today in six districts of Upper Assam following a 72-hour bandh called by the All Tai Ahom Students’ Union, officials said.

The bandh, which began at 5 am today, has been called in protest against inclusion of Ahom-dominated areas in tribal council areas of different communities like Deori, Thengal Kachari and Sonowal Kacharis, where council polls are scheduled on June six.

The affected districts are Jorhat, Sibsagar, Golaghat, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and Lakhimpur.

BJP legislator charged with raping lady teacher

Patna, May 31: In a major embarrassment to the BJP in Bihar, a senior party legislator has been accused of raping a lady teacher in Purnia district.

The 35-year-old teacher of a private school has alleged that BJP MLA Raj Kishore Kesri and his cohorts had raped her for more than three years, Purnia Division’s DIG Amit Kumar told over the phone.

The victim had filed the FIR at Khazanchihat police station three days ago, he said.

World Cup organising committee to meet tomorrow

Mumbai, May 31: ICC President-elect Sharad Pawar will chair the meeting of the Central Organising Committee of the 2011 Cricket World Cup to be held at the BCCI headquarters here tomorrow.

International Cricket Council’s Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat would address the media afterwards along with Pawar and Tournament Director Prof Ratnakar Shetty, the ICC said in a media release today.

The COC also consists of representatives from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh who are co-hosts of the tournament.

Boy abducted, found murdered

Firozabad (UP), May 31: A 12-year-old boy was allegedly abducted and killed by unidentified persons in Sikhohabad area, police said here today.

Body of Abhishek Mahajan, who went missing from his residence in Sarai locality yesterday morning, was found from an abondoned house in Nagla Heera late last night, Superintendent of Police Udai Pratap said, adding the body had injury marks.

Israel on alert after Gaza aid attack

Jerusalem, May 31: Israeli security forces go on high alert to confront possible protests from Palestinians outraged by the Israeli navy’s deadly raid on a Gaza aid convoy.

The decision came on Monday to handle any “possible disturbances” among the Israeli Arabs, AFP quoted an unnamed police spokesman.

Hamas condemns Gaza aid attack

Gaza, May 31: Hamas calls those on the Gaza aid convoy as heroes of the Palestinian nation, urging Arab leaders to take practical steps to end the Gaza siege.

Gaza Freedom Flotilla came under fire early on Monday by Israeli navy forces in international waters more than 150km (90 miles) off the coast of Gaza.

At least 20 people were killed in the attack and more than 50 others were wounded.

No decision yet on fielding army to fight Naxals: Antony

Pune, May 31: Defence Minister A. K. Antony today said the government was “examining all pros and cons of various aspects” of deploying army in anti-Naxalite operations in the country.

While making it clear that government had not taken any decision in the matter so far, he said, “we are carefully examining all pros and cons of various aspects and once a decision is made, it will be binding on the military.”

“The armed forces will also accept whatever decision government takes” and implement it with vigour, Mr. Antony added.
