Manmad Express to halt at Bolarum

Hyderabad, May 01: The South Central Railway will provide a one-minute halt for the Secunderabad-Manamd-Sec’bad Express at Bolarum from May 1.Train No. 7064 Secunderabad- Manmad Express will leave Secunderabad at 18:10 hours and arrive/depart Bolarum at 18:33/18:34 hours and arrive/depart Medchal at 18:44/18:45 hours.

The 7063 Manmad-Secunderabad Express will arrive/depart Medchal at 07:30/07:31 hours, Bolarum at 08:09/08:10 hours and arrive Secunderabad at 09:10 hours.

Chandrababu Naidu interacts with party workers

Hyderabad, May 01: Opposition leader N Chandrababu Naidu today demanded that the State Government come to the rescue of farmers whose crops had withered away.

Interacting with party workers from Kadapa, Prakasam and Kurnool districts, Naidu demanded that the State Government pay compensation to farmers who could not properly irrigate their fields over 1.8 lakh acres due to power shortage.
Meanwhile, Jammu & Kashmir Panthers Party president Bhim Singh, along with several other leaders, called on Naidu here today.

Hyderabad, May 01: The project to gold plate the walls of the Ananda Nilayam at Tirumala has run into further trouble with 14 retired civil servants, all of whom had once served stints in the most revered temple, writing to Governor E S L Narasimhan and Chief Minister K Rosaiah to advise the temple board not to pursue the project.

The project, powered by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) Chairman D K Audikesavulu Naidu, has been stayed by the High Court , which is hearing a petition challenging it.

Armed cops maintain tight vigil in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, May 01: Gun-totting policemen kept a tight vigil in Hyderabad for the third consecutive day Friday in view of warnings by intelligence agencies of possible terror attacks. Police also cracked the whip on some shopping malls for poor security measures.

Police continued large-scale searches in the city amid warning of possible terror attacks. Armed security personnel maintained a tight vigil at busy traffic intersections and around major shopping malls, hotels and public places.

Afghanistan set 116-run target

St Lucia, May 01: Making a noticeable debut in International cricket, Afghanistan scored 115 for eight against India in a Group C match of the world Twenty20 cricket World Cup.

Afghanistan opener Noor Ali scored 50 off 48 balls with the help of four boundaries. Asghar Stanikzai contributed 30 off 33 balls, hitting three sixes.

Put in, Afghanistan lost wickets early and were reduced to 29 for three before Ali and Stanikzai shared 68 runs to pull the team out of trouble. But both were out on the same score of 97 and Afghanistan then lost five wickets for just 17 runs.

Nepal PM refuses to quit

Kathmandu, May 01: Maoists supremo Prachnanda today demanded the resignation of the Nepal Prime Minister Madhav Kumar, stepped up his anti-India rhetoric and asked neighbouring countries not to interfere in Nepal’s internal affairs.

Adressing a rally of thousands of Maoist cadres, who had assembled in the heart of the capital to mount fresh pressure on Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal to quit, Prachanda said the agitation is our compulsion not a choice.

Seven hurt by roadside bomb

Islamabad, May 01: Police say a roadside bomb has exploded near a police vehicle in southwestern Pakistan, wounding seven people.

Police official Ghulam Nabi says today’s attack happened in the city of Quetta, and it wounded four officers and three civilians.

No one claimed responsibility but authorities have blamed ethnic Baluch and nationalists for such previous attacks.

Quetta is the capital of Baluchistan province, where nationalists have waged a slow-scale insurgency for years to demand more autonomy and a greater share of income from the area’s natural resources.

US ‘to disclose size of nuclear stockpile’

Washington, May 01: US President Barack Obama will likely reveal the size of the US nuclear stockpile at a major UN nuclear disarmament summit next week in New York, The Washington Post reported today.

Citing unnamed officials, the newspaper said various factions in the Obama administration had debated for months whether to declassify the numbers.

But now the administration is seeking a dramatic announcement that will further enhance its nuclear credentials as it tries to bolster the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), the paper noted.

Kuwait busts Iran spy cell – report

Kuwait City, May 01: Security agencies in Kuwait have busted a spy cell working for Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, feeding information on Kuwaiti and US targets, a newspaper reported today.

Citing high-ranking security sources, Al-Qabas daily said Kuwait arrested at least seven men, some of whom served in the interior and defence ministries, while others include bidoon, or stateless Arabs, and other Arabs.

Eastern Airways snubs Paralympian Richie Powell because he cannot climb stairs

London, May 01: A WheelChair-bound athlete was left stranded when a British airline refused to let him on a plane because he could not walk up the steps to board.

Richie Powell, 39, who competed at the Paralympics, was “angry and embarrassed” at the snub.

He was booked on an Eastern Airways flight from Bristol, southern England, to Aberdeen, Scotland, for a 10-kilometer wheelchair race – but was told by an employee: “You can only fly if you walk up the steps.”

Riot police fire tear gas in Athens clash

Athens, May 01: Greek anti-riot police fired tear gas at youths protesting in Athens today as a trade union march marking May Day passed in front of the finance ministry.

Clashes erupted when several dozen youths, some armed with sticks, charged a line of anti-riot forces protecting the finance ministry, prompting police to respond with tear gas. The youths then dispersed.

Police also fired tear gas when a group of anarchists got close to the entrance of a luxury hotel on Athens’ central Syntagma square.

Apple shutting Lala

Los Angeles, May 01: Apple Inc is shutting down its newly bought Lala online music service amid speculation it is creating a way for iTunes customers to listen to songs stored on distant computers.

The move comes just weeks before an annual conference for developers in San Francisco on June 7 at which the secretive company tends to announce big news. Last year, it used the conference to unveil the latest version of its popular iPhone, the 3GS.

400m online users in China

Beijing, May 01: The number of internet users in China, already the largest in the world, has surpassed 400 million and accounts for almost a third of the country’s population, state media reported on Saturday.

The online population in the world’s most populous nation has reached 404 million, the official Xinhua news agency said, citing the State Council Information Office.

That compares with 384 million users at the end of 2009.

The pictures show the final hours and moment of death of an older female chimp living in a small group at a British safari park as captured on video.

Jury still out on Palin hacker

Knoxville, May 01: Before deliberating a fourth day at the trial of a man charged with hacking Sarah Palin’s e-mail, a federal jury in Knoxville will get some encouragement from the judge.

Jurors told US District Judge Thomas Phillips they have reached unanimous verdicts on three other charges but were still deadlocked on a count of identity theft on Thursday.

Defendant David Kernell is charged with breaking into Palin’s email while she was the Republican vice presidential candidate in 2008.

WHO confirms polio cases

Geneva, May 01: The World Health Organisation says 32 cases of polio have been confirmed in Tajikistan as health workers are setting up a nationwide vaccination campaign.

WHO spokesperson Fadela Chaib said the polio virus causing the outbreak is most closely related to the virus circulating in northern India. The agency sent a team to the Central Asian country last week to investigate the outbreak.

Chaib said vaccines have arrived in Tajikistan.

World mortality rates up

Washington, May 01: Aids, smoking and obesity are reversing progress made in helping people live longer around the world, with mortality rates worsening over the past 20 years in 37 countries, researchers reported on Thursday.

They found Icelandic men have the lowest risk of premature death, while Cypriot women do. Some rich countries such as the US and Britain scored relatively poorly, the survey found.

Verb Innovations has launched My Mobile Watchdog in SA. According to the company, the software is aimed at parents of young children who may be exposed to cyber bullying or sex predators online.

Endangered turtles dying

High Island, May 01: Flies buzz everywhere and the stench is overwhelming as biologist Lyndsey Howell stops to analyse the remains of yet another endangered sea turtle washed up from the Gulf of Mexico.

“It’s been on the beach for a while,” Howell said, flipping over the decomposing, dried-out shell.

More than 30 dead turtles have been found stranded on Galveston and the Bolivar Peninsula south of Houston this month – an unusually high number that has puzzled researchers, in part because most are so decomposed that there are few clues left about why they died.

Kindle e-reader gets upgrade

San Francisco, May 01: Amazon.com Inc’s Kindle e-reader is getting access to Facebook and Twitter, along with several other enhancements, as part of a software update being sent wirelessly to the devices.

In a posting on Amazon’s site, the company says the new software will let users share book passages on their Twitter and Facebook accounts.

The update will also let people sort books and documents into collections and lock their Kindle with a password. There also will be larger font options and the ability to zoom in on PDF documents.

“I would like to place on record that the story that I’m marrying Shoaib Akhtar is patently untrue, unfounded and wildly speculative,” Dia posted on her Twitter page Saturday.

“I don’t like this fictitious story gaining any more momentum and I do not desire such attention,” she added.
