Cops probe honour killing in Delhi journalist’s death

New Delhi, May 03: She was a 22-year-old journalist working with the Business Standard in Delhi. He was her batchmate from the Capital’s prestigious Indian Institute of Mass Communication, working in another media establishment in the city. Their love story had little in common with others they must have come across in their jobs recently. But, it may have ended the same way.

On April 29, Nirupama Pathak was found dead at her home in Koderma, Jharkhand. Her family said she had been found “hanging”. The police believe it may have been honour killing.

Reports: NKorean leader travels to China

Seoul, May 03: North Korean leader Kim Jong Il was believed to be making a rare trip to China on Monday amid tensions over the recent sinking of a South Korean warship and stalled nuclear disarmament negotiations, South Korean news reports said.

Kim’s train arrived early Monday in tight security at the Chinese border town of Dandong, and the delegation later headed to the port city of Dalian, the Yonhap news agency said. A convoy of 15 limousines was seen arriving at the Furama Hotel, the report said.

Senior Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Teklal Mahato on Saturday gave another twist to the continuing impasse in the State by saying that he is open to holding discussions with the Congress on the formation of an alternative government in Jharkhand, insisting that party chief Shibu Soren should remain the Chief Minister.

N.Korean leader on rare visit to China

Beijing, May 03: North Korea’s reclusive leader Kim Jong-Il arrived in China on Monday, an official said, on a trip to his country’s sole major ally which could lead to the revival of stalled nuclear talks.

“Kim arrived at about five this morning,” said an official at the Friendship Bridge tourist site at northeastern China’s Dandong border crossing with North Korea.

“We received a notice from the Public Security Bureau and the army that we should shut down tourist operations in the morning (when Kim’s train came over from North Korea),” the official told AFP by telephone.

Verdict on Kasab’s fate in 26/11 case today

Mumbai,May 03: Seventeen months after terror merchants from Pakistan unleashed death and destruction in Mumbai, a court will pronounce its verdict on Monday on the fate of lone surviving 26/11 gunman Ajmal Kasab and two alleged Indian conspirators.

Kasab, a native of Faridkot, along with nine slain terrorists, has been charged with killing 166 people, including 25 foreigners, and injuring 304 others at the instance of Lashkar-e-Taiba.

The Indian duo — Faheem Ansari and Sabauddin Ahmed — are accused of conspiracy in the brazen attacks.

Jaipur, May 03: Fourteen-year-old Marti is in a state of shock. She has just been rescued from the cotton fields of Gujarat where she was sold by her neighbours. She was made to work for hours without a break and tortured when refused to work.

Daughter of one Shankar Meena of Palpadar village in Dungarpur district, she was playing outside her house when her neighbour Shanti Meena took her to a nearby market on the pretext of buying her new shoes. Bangalore, May 03: After filing the complaint at the DGP’s residence, the woman’s husband Venkatesh Murthy said the police chief assured that an inquiry would be conducted.

“He (Halappa) has done a bad thing. He should be punished. It (the entire episode) should not become an entertainment for the people,” Murthy said while his wife alleged that Halappa had threatened to kidnap their children.

Fishing halted as Gulf oil slick threatens disaster

Washington, May 03: The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Sunday closed commercial and recreational fishing for 10 days in waters affected by the huge oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

‘NOAA is restricting fishing for a minimum of 10 days in federal waters most affected by the BP oil spill, largely between Louisiana state waters at the mouth of the Mississippi river to waters off Florida’s Pensacola Bay,’ reported quoting a NOAA statement.

Somali insurgents seize pirate haven

Somali, May 03: Somali insurgent group Hizbul Islam took control of the pirate haven of Haradheere on Sunday and wants to get involved in the lucrative trade, pirates and residents said.

Pirates said Hizbul Islam sent agents to the coastal town demanding a slice of the business. The pirates said they refused and the insurgent group entered Haradheere in armed pickup trucks without a fight.

“They have entered the town now. Their fighters are in every street,” resident Mohamed Hussein told Reuters. “They came with 14 battlewagons. Many pirates fled with cars from the town.”

London, May 03: Pakistan’s former premier Benazir Bhutto was told by the then military ruler Pervez Musharraf when she asked for more security, a close aide of the slain leader has revealed, according to the Sunday Times.

Bhutto was eventually killed in a gun and suicide attack Dec 27, 2007 during an election rally in Rawalpindi.

‘He (Musharraf) told her, ‘I warned you not to come back until after the elections’ and threatened her, ‘I’ll only protect you if you’re nice to me’,’ said Husain Haqqani, a former Bhutto aide, who is Pakistan’s ambassador in Washington.

One student killed, 80 injured in Iraq blasts

Baghdad, May 03: Two consecutive bomb attacks Sunday targeting buses carrying students to Iraq’s Mosul University left one Christian student dead and 80 injured, a local police source said.

The buses were carrying students from the Christian-dominated town of al-Hamdaniya, in the northern city of Mosul, the source told DPA.

Obama promises ‘relentless’ response to oil spill

Washington, May 03: US President Barack Obama Sunday warned of a ‘massive and potentially unprecedented environmental disaster’, as the widening oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico edged to 14 km off the coast of Louisiana.

But Obama said his administration would continue to mount a ‘relentless response’ to the oil spill, the result of the sinking of an offshore rig April 20.

‘We will spare no resource to clean up whatever damage is caused,’ Obama said in Venice, a staging ground for efforts to fight the oil slick, after meeting state and federal officials in Louisiana.

Four persons of a family were killed and another was injured when their Honda City car turned turtle after hitting a divider in front of Ansal Plaza in South Delhi after midnight on Sunday.

The incident took place around 12.30 am. “Those who died are Amarjeet Singh, Taranjeet Singh, Gurnil Singh and Sarabjeet Singh,” said a police officer. Akhilesh is battling for his life in hospital.

London, May 03: For the first time, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown on Sunday hinted that he would not try to cling on to power by doing deals with other parties if Labour suffered a decisive defeat in Thursday’s general elections which are widely predicted to result in a “hung” Parliament.

He also indicated that he would step down as leader of the Labour party.

“Of course, I respect the view of the electorate, I am a democrat,” he told The Observer when asked about his post-election options if Labour ended up in third place after Tories and the Liberal Democrats.

Maoists held in Orissa; arms, explosives seized

Bhubaneswar, May 03: Four Maoists were arrested and a substantial amount of explosives and arms seized from them by security forces in separate operations in two districts of Orissa on Sunday, official sources said.

While two were picked up from Pallapadu forest of Gajapati district, the others were nabbed from the Tekguda jungles in Malkangiri during joint combing operations by the CRPF and the state’s elite anti-naxal Special Operations Group.
