Afghan suicide attack kills 1 outside CIA base

Kabul, May 03: A suicide attack outside a CIA base killed one civilian and wounded two security guards Monday in eastern Afghanistan, an Afghan official said.

The blast happened outside Camp Chapman, the same base that was hit in December in one of the worst attacks in the history of the U.S. intelligence agency, said Mubarez Zadran, a spokesman for the provincial governor.

The base is in Khost province, a dangerous region southeast of the capital.

Joint bank accounts losing their shine

London, May 03: Joint bank accounts, which newly weds used to open almost immediately after getting married, are losing their appeal as ‘most people like to have their ‘own’ money to spend without having to -justify it to another person’, a new study in Britain has revealed.

The survey by Tesco Bank found that modern couples do not take the plunge for at least two years and one in three couples don’t do it at all, Daily Express reported Monday.

Of those who do get married, 56 percent like to maintain some kind of financial independence and don’t pool their resources.

Asian factory output strong, inflation mounting

New York, May 03: Factories in Asia-Pacific cranked up production last month, with Australia surging at its fastest pace in eight years, and mounting inflation pressures pointed to further policy tightening as the economic recovery gathers steam.

Output growth in India eased a tad in April but still held near a 20-month high hit in February while factory activity in South Korea picked up after a brief dip, surveys by HSBC/Markit showed on Monday.

British teen beaten to brink of death for iPod

London, May 03: The distraught mother of a 14-year-old Briton, who was severely beaten up by a group of teenagers for his iPod, said the government had made the worst mistake by ‘taking away the rights of parents to chastise their children’.

Tyler Molloy was viciously assaulted by the gang after they stole his iPod. Molloy went into coma for two days and will not be fit enough to return to school until September, Daily Mail reported Monday.

Gunmen kill six in El Salvador football field

San Salvador, May 03: Six people were killed and one wounded when five gunmen opened fire at a football field in El Salvador, police said.

The incident occurred Saturday in Olocuilta town, 22 km from San Salvador, National Civilian Police officials said Sunday.

Three men died at the spot, two succumbed to injuries while being transported to hospital while the sixth man died while undergoing surgery, officials said.

Rajya Sabha adjourned over 2G spectrum scam

New Delhi, May 03: The Rajya Sabha was adjourned twice Monday as opposition members demanded that Telecom Minister A. Raja be dismissed over the alleged irregularities in the allocation of 2G spectrum.

As soon as the house met for the day, members of the AIADMK and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were on their feet, demanding action against Raja. Following the din in the house, Chairman Hamid Ansari adjourned the house for 15 minutes.

New Delhi, May 03: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Monday met UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and demanded the early passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill in Lok Sabha.

Karunanidhi, who is here on a three-visit, met the Congress President at her 10, Janpath residence here and the two are understood to have discussed the latest political situation in the country.

New Delhi, May 03: The Supreme Court Monday cancelled the bail of mafia don and Bihar politician Pappu Yadav, who had been sentenced to life in the murder case of Communist Party of India-Marxist legislator Ajit Sarkar.
He was granted bail by Patna High Court in February 2009.

Macau union leader arrested in clashes: report

Hong Kong, May 03: Macau police have arrested a trade union leader for allegedly assaulting an Australian man during weekend May Day protests that left 41 people injured, a report said Monday.

Hong Kong daily The Standard said police charged Lei Sio-kuan, president of the Macau Workers Power Union, with wounding following the Saturday clashes which saw riot police use water cannon and pepper spray on demonstrators.

Protesters fought back with stones and bottles, local media said.

Mumbai, May 03: The true extent of the Hindutva terror network, whose trail was being followed by slain Maharashtra top cop Hemant Karkare, is getting unravelled only now.

The then ATS chief, Karkare, while investigating the 2008 Malegaon blasts case, had reportedly developed certain leads on the involvement of Hindutva organisations in the attacks across the country. Sensex opens 140 points down on profit-booking, weak Asian cues

Mumbai, May 03: The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark index, Sensex, fell by over 140 points or 0.80 per cent in opening trade today on profit booking and a weak trend on other Asian bourses.

The 30-share index, which had gained nearly 179 points in the previous two sessions, was down 140.87 points, or 0.80 per cent, to 17,417.84 points in opening trade.

Stocks of information technologies, metals and oil and gas sectors were under pressure, pulled the Sensex down.

The wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty also declined by 46.55 points, or 0.88 per cent, to 5,231.45.

Iran urges nuke states to join NPT

Tehran, May 03: As the United Nations hosts a nuclear disarmament conference in New York, Iran calls on nuke-armed countries to join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

“Countries which possess nuclear arsenals but pay no heed to non-proliferation of [nuclear] weapons should immediately join the NPT,” Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast told the Iranian Labor News Agency (ILNA) on Sunday.

Taliban target Afghan forces convoy

Kabul, May 03: A car laden with explosives has hit a convoy of Afghan forces, near a foreign troops base, wounding one Afghan in the town of Khost in southeastern Afghanistan.

Taliban Spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the bomber used a car laden with a huge quantity of explosives in the blast.

“There was a suicide car bomb near a NATO facility in Khost city. So far at this stage, we only know that one local person has been injured,” said local government Spokesman Mubariz Zadran.

“The bomber detonated near a water-tanker that was entering the base.”

Grenade attack kills one in Pakistan

Islamabad, May 03: A woman has been killed and three others injured in a grenade attack targeting the residence of a local peace committee in Swat Valley, northwest of Pakistan.

The bomb ripped through the house of Roshanzada, a member of local Peace Committee in Kabal area of Sangarserai in Swat Valley on Sunday, leaving one woman dead and three more people injured, Pakistani police officials told Press TV.

The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital and police cordoned off the area, starting an investigation into the blast.

Blast at mosque kills two in Somalia

Mogadishu, May 03: A hand grenade explosion at a mosque in Somalia’s southern city of Kismayo has killed at least two and injured more than 11 others, eyewitnesses and officials said.

The explosion took place in the al-Shabab controlled port city on Sunday night when worshippers were praying.

Eyewitnesses said that the explosion was caused by a hand grenade hurled at the mosque, a Press TV correspondent reported.

Al-Shabab officials said no one from their group has been injured in the attack.

UK official critical of anti-Muslim laws

London, May 03: The UK government’s independent reviewer of terrorism legislation has expressed concerns about the use of stop and search operations on Muslim citizens by British police.

“Stop and search has a particular community impact and I have been concerned not only about the exercises of police in the past, whether foul or do not foul in the civil liberty agenda, but I have been concerned too about the fact that perhaps this proportion of Muslims have been stopped and searched, which should not have occurred,” Lord Alex Carlile told Press TV’s Face to Face program last Thursday.
