UK Anglican bishops in talks with Vatican

London, May 03: Two Church of England bishops say they have travelled to the Vatican for exploratory talks about joining the Catholic Church.

The bishop of Fulham and the bishop of Richborough said they and a third bishop travelled to Rome to speak with Catholic officials.

The Sunday Telegraph said that the bishops had told the Vatican they were ready to defect, but Rev Keith Newton, the bishop of Richborough, said that was not true.

He said he and his colleagues were in Rome for “nothing more than exploratory talks” and that no decision had been made.

India to stay out of NPT review conference that begins today

United Nations, May 03: Over 150 nations, including Iran, will get together for an international review of the Non-Proliferation Treaty, but India will not be part of the deliberations during which the US is expected to push non-signatories to sign the pact.

The conference on NPT review will kick off here today and the Iran-West showdown over Tehran’s nuclear programme is likely to dominate the proceedings.

India, which is not a signatory to the NPT has decided to stay out of the conference.

Swastika on British Parliament targets far-right

London, May 03: Campaigners against the far-right in Britain on Monday projected an image of a swastika on the side of Parliament, amid fears extremists could be voted in at this week’s general election.

The anti-fascist group, the EMMA Trust, beamed the picture of the red and white swastika onto the Houses of Parliament alongside the phrase: “Decision Time. Keep the far-right out.”

“The rationale behind this projection is to protect this iconic building that is the bastion of our democratic values around the world against the invasion of the far-right,” said a trust spokesman.

BJP formulating code of conduct for party workers: Parrikar

Panaji, May 03: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is formulating a code of conduct for party workers on tackling issues ranging from handling obstinate bureaucrats and time management to personal conduct while dealing with women, a senior party functionary said.

Manohar Parrikar, convener of the BJP’s newly formed governance cell, told a news agency that the code of conduct would be shortly evolved by the cell after discussions with other senior party leaders and chief ministers of party-ruled states.

Iraq begins Baghdad vote recount requested by PM

Baghdad, May 03: Iraqi officials began on Monday a controversial recount of the 2.5 million ballots cast in Baghdad, a move requested by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki who narrowly lost a parliamentary election held nearly two months ago.

Political factions have since the March 7 vote wrestled over the results which showed a bloc led by al-Maliki coming two seats short of a rival coalition led by a secular Shiite heavily backed by Sunni Arabs.

Melbourne, May 03: An Indian national was let off lightly with a suspended eight-month jail term after it was found that he took advantage of racial tensions in Australia to falsely claim that he was set on fire after he accidentally burnt himself in a botched insurance claim bid.

Jaspreet Singh, 28, had claimed that he was racially attacked in Melbourne after he reportedly burnt himself while torching his car to make an insurance claim.

Thai ‘red shirts’ ignore new government threats

Bangkok, May 03: Anti-government protesters in the Thai capital showed no sign of leaving the city’s main shopping district on Monday despite new warnings of clashes and losses during a two-month crisis that has already killed 27 people.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva warned thousands of red shirted protesters on Sunday there was a risk of further trouble if the protesters did not leave upscale Bangkok shopping district they have closed and barricaded themselves in for a month.

Iran develops short-range missile defence

Tehran, May 03: Iran, whose nuclear dispute with the West has raised the possibility of new regional conflict, has developed a short-range defence system to combat Cruise missiles, its defence minister was quoted as saying on Sunday.

“A new short range anti-Cruise defence system with the capability to fire 4,000 rounds of bullets per minute has been produced at the Defence Ministry and soon will be inaugurated,” Ahmad Vahidi said on semi-official Fars news agency.

No need of US’ help to fight China: Taiwan

Taipei, May 03: Taiwan will never ask the United States to help fight a war, officials said on Monday in comments that could ease regional tension but shake views the island needs the world military superpower to battle China.

In a statement seen appeasing both Washington and Beijing, Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou had told a visiting television reporter over the weekend that the island would stand up for itself, suggesting the United States was not obligated to send help and risk its own conflict with China.

India will stay out of NPT review conference at UN

United Nations,May 03: India will not be participating in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference that begins here tomorrow, during which the US is expected to push non-NPT signatories to sign the pact.

“We are not parties to the NPT and we will not be participating,” an official at the Permanent Mission of India to the UN said.

He said India would not be represented in the conference in any capacity not even as an “observer” country.

TN requests Centre to allow Prabhakaran’s mother for treatment

Chennai, May 03: Tamil Nadu government has written to the Centre recommending that Parvathi Ammal, mother of slain LTTE leader V Prabhakaran, be allowed to enter the state for medical treatment.

Deputy Chief Minister MK Stalin informed the Assembly that “we have written to the Union Home Secretary to consider allowing Parvathi Ammal for treatment in the state provided certain conditions are met”.

“We received an e-mail from Parvathi Ammal requesting us to allow her to come to Tiruchirappalli for treatment”, Stalin said. However, he did not specify what the conditions were.

Parents of murdered journalist arrested in Jharkhand

Koderma, May 03: The parents of Nirupama Pathak, who was murdered by her family members on Thursday, were taken into custody for interrogation Monday, a senior police official said.

“We have taken the parents of Pathak, who was attached with a reputed English business daily from New Delhi, for interrogation in connection with her murder”, Koderma police superintendent Kranti Singh said.

He, however, refused to comment whether it was a “honour killing” saying investigation was still on.

Man arrested for killing jeweller

Mumbai, May 03:The Ghatkopar police have arrested a 25-year-old resident of Ashok Nagar for allegedly killing a jeweller on April 13. The police said jeweller Bharat Dhing (34) was shot dead by the accused, Sikander, when he was returning home after shutting down his shop in Ghatkopar.

Dhing was on his motorcycle with one of his employees. The police said Sikander and his accomplice had planned the murder two days prior to the incident.

Tissainayagam to receive Presidential pardon

Colombo, May 03: A Sri Lankan journalist sentenced for 20 years for “inciting communal disharmony” is to receive a Presidential pardon, External Affairs Minister G.L. Peiris said on Monday.

J.S. Tissainayagam, a Tamil, was sentenced in August under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

He was charged for printing a monthly magazine in which he had allegedly published material inciting communal disharmony. He was also found guilty of collecting funds through the magazine and thereby promoting terrorism.

Mumbai attacks suspect faces court verdict

Mumbai, May 03: A 22-year-old Pakistani man who faces the death sentence if convicted for taking part in the 2008 Mumbai attacks that left 166 people dead is due to learn his fate in an Indian court on Monday.

Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, said to be the lone surviving gunman, was arrested after 10 militants went on the rampage in India’s financial capital on November 26, 2008.

India blamed the assaults, which targeted multiple sites around the city, on the banned Pakistan-based Islamist group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), straining already tense diplomatic ties with its neighbour.

No power sharing deal in Nepal so far; Maoists strike continues

Kathmandu, May 03: Nepal’s three largest parties failed to reach a consensus to resolve the political crisis that has spilled on to the streets, but agreed to resume talks on a power-sharing deal on Monday, even as the Maoists’ general strike paralysed the capital for a second day.

The Unified CPN-Maoist, Nepali Congress and CPN-UML failed to arrive at a power sharing agreement last evening, with both the Maoists and the ruling coalition sticking to their stands.

BSE Sensex drops 0.6 pct; autos buck trend

Mumbai, May 03: The BSE Sensex shed 0.6 percent on Monday, with export-driven outsourcer Infosys Technologies among the big losers on weaker-than-expected U.S. economic growth and debt troubles in the euro zone.

China’s tightening moves and a survey that showed India’s manufacturing in April expanded at a slower pace for the second month following a drop in new orders and output also added to the shaky sentiment.

Infosys Technologies, which gets most of its revenue from the United States, shed 1.3 percent after the U.S. economy grew 3.2 percent in the first quarter, below expectations.
