Kuwaiti oil barrel price rises 25 %

Kuwait, May 04: Kuwait Petroleum Corporation said that the price of the Kuwaiti barrel of crude oil recorded a rise of 25 cents yesterday to settle at USD 83.69 per barrel (pb) in comparison to those of last Friday.

Reports attribute this rise to the continuing revival of the US economy, and Washington’s announcement that its oil exports from the Gulf of Mexico are threatened due to the strong winds approaching the area, which could affect the production of wells on the shores of Louisiana.

IAS officer arrested, Rs 4.60 cr found

Hyderabad, May 04: An Indian Administrative Services Officer (IAS) who was the Joint Collector of Ranga Reddy District of Andhra Pradesh was arrested by the sleuths of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for possessing assets disproportionate to his known source of Income, here today.

ACB’s simultaneous searches at various places covering his office and residence and unearthed movable and immovable assets possessed by him and his family members worth Rs.4.60 crore.

The searches were conducted at-a-time at Banjara Hills and Himayathnagar in the State Capital.

Secure radio network planned for CWG

New Delhi, May 04: A secure radio network is being planned for the upcoming Commonwealth Games to facilitate easy communication between various government agencies, the Lok Sabha was told Tuesday.

“Delhi government is planning to create a secure radio network using the Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) facility for the Commonwealth Games. The system will provide integrated, secured, encrypted, state of art communication network for use during Commonwealth Games,” Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Pratik Prakashbapu Patil said in the house.

Ghaziabad, May 04: A special court Tuesday held domestic help Surender Koli guilty of the rape and murder of seven-year-old Arti, who had disappeared from her home in September 2005 and was amongst the 19 women and children from Noida’s Nithari village whose body parts were found in a drain.

Lodge FIR against VC in radiation case: DU students

New Delhi, May 04: A police case should be lodged against Delhi University (DU) vice chancellor Deepak Pental for gross negligence and irresponsibility over the radiation leak fiasco, the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) demanded Tuesday.

“The radiation fiasco which cost a person his life happened only because of gross negligence of the officials of the science department under the administration of the vice chancellor,” Kriti Wadhera, vice president of the students union, told reporters here.

Thai protesters accept PM’s compromise

Bangkok, May 04: Thai protesters say they have accepted a deal to end the violent political crisis that has paralyzed central Bangkok for nearly two months.

The Red Shirt leaders agreed Tuesday to Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva’s proposal to hold new elections on Nov. 14 in exchange for an end to their protest.

Earlier, Thailand’s anti-government protesters had sought assurances that the entire government backed the Prime Minister’s latest proposal for early elections in exchange for ending their crippling, week-long occupation of downtown Bangkok.

HIV positive people protest outreach workers

New Delhi, May 04: Nearly 500 HIV positive people and those suffering from AIDS Tuesday staged a rally in the capital demanding that all the outreach workers who were ousted by the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) should be retained.

NACO has decided to outscource its outreach work to a private agency – Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services (IL&FS) – and, therefore, terminated the services of the outreach workers from the positive networks March 31.

Kasab is a killing machine, must get death: Prosecution

Mumbai, May 04: Pakistani terrorist Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab is “Satan, a devil” and “a killing machine” and must get the death penalty for murder, the prosecution in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack case said Tuesday.

In his arguments a day after Kasab was pronounced guilty by Special Judge M.L. Tahaliyani, Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said Kasab had been convicted for mass murder and waging war against India.

“If all these are read together, the maximum punishment is death and minimum is life imprisonment,” Nikam said.

Soren has a history of not quitting easily

Ranchi, May 04: With his fate still hanging in the balance, Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren chaired a cabinet meeting Monday signalling that he is in no hurry to relinquish power.

Previous instances show that Soren, who also heads the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), does not quit influential posts easily. He is known to hold on to office for as long as he can or till the time he is left with no other option but to quit.

As part of the current political crisis in the state, Soren-led government’s coalition partner Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wants him to transfer power to it.

11 police officers injured in terror attack on police station

Moscow, May 04: Eleven police officers were injured in a terror grenade attack on a police station in Russia’s North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia near troubled Chechnya.

An unidetified assailant attacked a police station on the Kavkaz federal highway near Nazran, the largest city in the republic, using a grenade launcher yesterday, investigators said. ”As a result of the attack, 11 police officers sought medical assistance,” investigators said. No one was reported killed in the attack.

Iran unveils new anti-cruise system

Tehran, May 04: Iran unveils an advanced anti-cruise missile artillery system in line with a plan to boost the country’s defensive capabilities.

Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi told reporters Saturday that the domestically-developed system dubbed Mesbah I can be used against low-altitude targets, including cruise missiles, choppers and drones.

He said the new system, capable of firing “four thousand shells per minute,” features unique properties that differentiates it from similar air defense systems in the region.

Bomb found near railway track

Guwahati, May 04: Security forces today recovered a bomb near the railway tracks at Moirabari in Udalguri district of Assam. Official sources said the explosive was recovered during a search operation conducted on the railway tracks in the area following an input that anti-talks faction of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) militants could strike after the arrest of their ‘chief’ Ranjan Daimary. The bomb disposal squad has been rushed to defuse the bomb.

CRPF picket attacked in Srinagar, one injured

Srinagar, May 04: Militants made an abortive bid to blow up a roadside Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) bunker on the bank of river Jehlum near here this afternoon.

A civilian received splinter wounds in the neck, official sources said.

They said that militants hurled a hand grenade towards bunker of 144 CRPF batallion near Hanuman Mandir, Amira Kadal bridge at crowded Hari Singh High Street (HSHS) this afternoon at 1440 hrs.

However, it missed the intended target and exploded on the roadside causing splinter injuries to one Ghulam Ahmad Dagga.

Haryana Raj Bhawan buildings to get solar power plants

Chandigarh, May 04: The Haryana government has drawn up a Rs.2 crore (Rs.20 million) plan to set up solar power plants at the Haryana Raj Bhawan here and collectorate offices in 10 of the state’s districts.

Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary of Renewable Energy Madhusudan Prasad said Tuesday that a 45 kilowatt (KW) solar power plant will be installed at Haryana Raj Bhawan located in state capital Chandigarh.

Left leader dies in Tripura

Agartala, May 04: Ela Bhattacharjee, a leader of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and mother-in-law of Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, died here Monday night. She was 89.

Bhattacharjee, a teacher-turned-Communist, was not keeping well for the past five years. She died at her residence at Krishnanagar here.

She is survived by a son and five daughters, a family source said Tuesday.

‘She was suffering from various old-age ailments,’ the source said.

Grenade explosion in Srinagar

Srinagar, May 04: Separatist guerrillas Tuesday hurled a grenade at a bunker of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) near the city centre of this Jammu and Kashmir summer capital, police said. No casualties have been reported in the incident.

The incident took place at the Hari Singh High Street area.

‘Luckily no one was injured. Searches are being carried out in the area,’ a police officer said.
