‘Hawks pushing Obama on Iran’

Tehran, May 05: President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says US President Barack Obama is under pressure from a “group” to adopt an aggressive stance against Iran.

“We believe that there is a group that is trying to bring Mr. Obama closer to a clash with Iran or stand against Iran,” Ahmadinejad told Russia Today on Tuesday.

“When Mr. Obama is placed in the position of clashing with Iran, then his motto for change is lost,” he added.

‘Sanctions would close door to Iran’

Tehran, May 05: President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has warned that passing tougher UN sanctions against Iran would shut off all chances for diplomatic engagement between Iran and the United States.

“Any connections and contacts with Iran, the pathway to Iran, will be shut permanently,” Ahmadinejad said in an interview with the Boston Globe on Tuesday.

“Those who are trying to radicalize the atmosphere here fail to understand that they are speedily moving towards the cliff,” he added.

Ash forces closure of airspace over Scotland, Northern Ireland

London, May 05: A volcanic ash cloud forced British air traffic authorities to close the airspace above Scotland and Northern Ireland as of Wednesday morning, only hours after a similar flight ban was lifted.

No take-offs and landings will be allowed as of 0600 GMT Wednesday, Britain’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said late Tuesday. The CAA said it feared the situation to deteriorate in the course of Wednesday, as the ash cloud was expected to move south towards England and Wales.

‘Taliban a force to be reckoned with’

Washington, May 05: Top NATO official Mark Sedwill says Taliban are a force to be reckoned with, adding that a stable Afghanistan is the key to a safer Pakistan.

NATO’s senior civilian representative in Afghanistan, who is on a two-day visit to Pakistan, said on Tuesday that it is necessary to promote political and bilateral relations between both countries to maintain peace in the Pak-Afghan region.

Gaza, May 05: Israel reportedly questions aspiring Islamic leaders on their political orientation, disqualifying those who would not suit the regime’s interests.

One imam, who had failed to clear the hurdle, revealed that the Israeli Security Agency Shin Bet would grill them before they assume their position in mosques, read a piece on the Abu Dhabi-based paper, The National.

Russia to sell weapons to NATO

Moscow, May 05: Russia’s Ambassador to NATO Dmitry Rogozin has said Moscow is tying helicopter supplies to Afghanistan with permission to sell arms to NATO countries.

“We are seeking an opportunity for the Russian defense industry to trade its products within the alliance’s member states. We will earn money and they will acquire reliable quality weapons,” Rogozin said on Tuesday.

Sensex tanks 268 pts on Greece debt concerns

Mumbai, May 05: The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex today tanked over 268 points to trade below the 17,000-points level in opening trade in line with the meltdown in overseas markets on concerns that Greece’s debt crisis could spread to other countries.

The 30—share index, which had lost over 421 points in the previous two sessions, plunged further by 268.31 points, or 1.56 per cent to slump below the 17,000-points level – for the first time since March 5 – at 16,868.83 points.

Ahmadinejad says sanctions won’t stop Iran

New York, May 05: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said more U.N. sanctions against his country over its nuclear program would not stop Iran but could permanently wreck its ties with the United States.

“Sanctions cannot stop the Iranian nation. The Iranian nation is able to withstand the pressure of the United States and its allies,” Ahmadinejad told a news conference in New York, where he is attending a United Nations conference.

“While we do not welcome sanctions, we do not fear them either,” he said, speaking through an interpreter.

Iraq Shia blocs to join forces in parliament

Baghdad, May 05: Iraq’s two big Shia political coalitions, one led by Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and one whose leaders have close ties to Iran, agreed on Tuesday on an alliance to form a single bloc in parliament, officials said.

But the two groups have not yet agreed on the contentious issue of a nominee for prime minister, the major stumbling block in talks so far, an official with Maliki’s State of Law said.

More Afghan schoolgirls ill in suspected gas attack

Kabul, May 05: 22 Kabul schoolgirls and three teachers fell suddenly ill and were hospitalized in what Afghan authorities described as the fourth suspected poison gas attack on a girls’ school in weeks.

The incident was the first in the comparatively secure capital after three suspected poison attacks on girls’ schools in the northern city of Kunduz over the past few weeks and several at provincial schools last year.

Two constables arrested in Sohrabuddin case

Gandhinagar, May 05: After the arrest of Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Vipul Agrawal Monday night in connection with the killing in a fake gun fight of Tulsi Prajapati, the sole eyewitness of the Sohrabuddin Sheikh staged killing, two constables of the Gujarat police were arrested Tuesday.

Prajapati, a close associate of Sohrabuddin, was killed in Banaskantha district in December 2006, about a year after Sohrabuddin’s elimination in Ahmedabad.

Girl dies after fall from mall’s fourth floor

Lucknow, May 05: An architecture student died after falling from the fourth floor of a mall here Tuesday, police said. It is yet to be ascertained whether it was a case of suicide or murder.

Shruti Agarwal, who was B.Arch. second-year student at the Babu Banarsi Das (BBD) College here, fell in the Fun Republic Mall in the Gomti Nagar area.

Police have detained Agarwal’s friend – Raj Kumar, 20, who was with her. While he hails from Indore in Madhya Pradesh, Agarwal was a native of Meerut district in Uttar Pradesh.

Obama welcomes Indonesian announcement to ratify CTBT

Washington, May 05: US President Barack Obama has welcomed Indonesia’s announcement to ratify the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) and said that the United States is also committed to ratify it and its early entry into force.

“The United States is committed to the ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty and to its early entry into force, and we will work with the United States Senate to help achieve advice and consent to this important international agreement,” Obama said in a statement.

Eight killed in Venezuelan prison riot

Caracas, May 05: Eight inmates died and three were injured in a riot at a prison in Venezuela, officials have said.

The fight broke out Tuesday at the Santa Ana prison in Tachira state after a “confrontation among the inmates” over long-standing disputes, Consuelo Cerrada, national director of prison services, said.

The situation has been brought under control and Venezuela’s national guard was conducting a role call to determine if any other prisoners had been injured or killed.

America will not be terrorised, asserts Obama

Washington, May 05: Declaring that America will not be terrorised, US President Barack Obama Tuesday pledged federal agencies would work aggressively to determine whether a Pakistani-American suspect in the failed Times Square bombing case had any connection to terror groups.

US authorities arrested Faisal Shahzad, 30, a naturalised American citizen from Pakistan, for driving the car bomb to the famed Times Square, at 11.45 p.m. Monday at New York’s JFK International Airport minutes before he was to flee to Pakistan.

London, May 05: Modern gadgets such as Blackberrys and iPhones are ruining women’s sex lives because their husbands are too distracted in the bedroom, says a latest study.

More than a quarter of women (28 percent) claim that email and internet are disrupting their love lives, with hand-held devices particularly to blame. Other factors which prevent couples enjoying intimacy include long working hours (cited by 55 percent of women), tiredness (83 percent) and being too busy (74 percent), reports telegraph.co.uk.

140 al-Qaeda men have crossed into India

New Delhi, May 05: According to an uncorroborated intelligence report, about 140 al-Qaeda terrorists have crossed into India and that was presumably the primary reason behind the weekend terror alert sounded by the government in Delhi.

The report by Assam intelligence wing suggests that the terrorists have sneaked through the western coasts of India in to Gujarat. The report also suggested that the terrorists might have used Sri Lankan Navy boats for sneaking into India though Navy has brushed aside these claims.

4000 Intl units of Vitamin D daily necessary for pregnant women

Washington, May 05: U. S. researchers have suggested that pregnant women should take 4,000 International Units of vitamin D daily.

Taking vitamin D supplements during pregnancy is not only safe for both mother and baby, but may prevent infections and pre-term labor/births, says study leader Dr. Carol Wagner of the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Findings of the randomized-controlled study were presented in Vancouver at the annual meeting of the Pediatric Academic Societies.

London, May 05: The findings of a study revealed that children of women who smoked during pregnancy days ended becoming obese in their teenage days.

Grounding to the fact was researchers observed that ones who were exposed to cigarette smoke while in the womb developed more fat than their non-exposed peers later in life time.

Precisely they ended up having a third more fat around their internal organs and 26 per cent more fat directly under the skin.

Only one Apache copter ready for combat use: UK

London, May 05: The UK Defence Ministry has informed that only one helicopter is now ready for frontline combat operations. There are three helicopters but they can use only one.

The Telegraph has mentioned that, this has been due to wear and tear in the machines. The dust and excessive heat in the Helmand Desert in south Afghanistan have created huge damage in the helicopters. And only for that reason British troops are failed to take on the Taliban at the mean time.

Out of 67 helicopters, for the front line operations in Afghanistan to train pilots only 18 are available in UK.

Jennifer Aniston eating baby food to shape up

London, May 05: Hollywood actress Jennifer Aniston has started having baby food in a bid to shape up for her new movie.

The former “Friends” star has reportedly shed seven lbs (3.1 kg) after starting the “baby food cleanse” programme, ahead of her new film “Just Go With It”.
