BJP issues notice to Gunsola

Dehradun, May 05: The ruling BJP in Uttarakhand today issued a notice to its leader Ratan Singh Gunsola in the face of allegations that he paid Rs one crore to the party to bag hydro-electric projects even as the Chief Minister said the final allotment of 56 such ventures was yet to be made. State BJP head Bishan Singh Chufal issued the show cause notice to Gunsola who created a flutter when he claimed he had paid Rs one crore to the party to bag the projects.

Bombay HC wants Pawar as party on IPL tax exemption case

Mumbai, May 05: Raising questions over “conflict of interest” if a minister was a member of a cricket body, the Bombay High Court today directed impleading the Union Government in a PIL seeking levy of entertainment tax on IPL matches and allowed making Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar a party to the case.

‘Embracing Islam just for marriage is against religion’

Muzaffarnagar (UP), May 05: Islamic seminary Dar-ul-Uloom Deoband has said conversion to Islam just for the sake of marriage is against religion.

Its comments came after a Hindu man in Garhi Pukhta village said he wanted to convert to Islam to marry his domestic help, who is a Muslim.

Last month, 82-year-old Om Prakash, also a freedom fighter, and Gasia Begum (50) had applied at the marriage registrar office. Following stiff opposition to the relationship by his two sons, Prakash said he would convert to Islam if he was not allowed to marry Gasia.

Rio requests Chidambaram to ensure Muivah’s safe visit

New Delhi, May 05: Home Minister P Chidambaram is understood to have asked Manipur Chief Minister Ibobi Singh to ensure a safe visit of NSCN-IM leader T Muivah to his birthplace in the state following a request by Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio.

“I met the Home Minister and requested him to see that Muivah could visit his ancestral home. The Home Minister was kind enough to call up the Manipur Chief Minister in front of me and asked him to ensure peace and do the needful for the visit,” Rio told reporters after meeting Chidambaram.

No noticeable impact of Dubai crisis on exports: Govt

New Delhi, May 05: The government today said the recent Dubai World debt crisis had no significant impact on the Indian economy including, exports.

“…there is no noticeable negative impact of the Dubai debt crisis on Indian export and economy,” Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jotiraditya Scindia informed the Rajya Sabha in a written reply.

Dubai World is an investment company that manages and supervises a portfolio of businesses and projects for the Dubai Government.

Fonseka not allowed to attend parliament

Colombo, May 05: Detained former Army Chief Sarath Fonseka today went on an hunger strike after he was not allowed to attend Parliament by authorities, who wanted him to appear before a court martial.

“Gen. Fonseka began a hunger strike this morning. He was not given permission to attend Parliament today despite an appeal from Democratic National Alliance and United National Party members,” Democratic National Alliance General Secretary and Parliamentarian Vijay Herath told PTI.

SC flays Nitish govt for seeking central aid to help

New Delhi, May 05: The Supreme Court today hauled up the Nitish Kumar government in Bihar for seeking central funds to provide shelter to destitutes and said the state authorities should have done this on its own.

Expressing displeasure at Bihar government’s attitude, the apex court said “what could be a greater need than protecting human lives? You need Government of India funds and till then you can’t set up shelters?

India may get access to Headley by month-end

New Delhi, May 05: The US will inform India by next week about possible dates, most likely in this month, for giving direct access to Pakistani-American terrorist David Coleman Headley.

Sources in the Home Ministry said by May 15, the US will convey to India when a team of Indian investigators will visit Chicago for “direct access” to Headley.

“India in all likelihood will get direct access within this month only,” they said.

Woman alleges gangrape at husband’s behest

Chandigarh, May 05: A woman in her early 20s today alleged she was gangraped by her husband’s friends at his behest as she had not been able to meet his dowry demands.

The woman narrated her tale of woes to Director General (Administration) Swaranjit Singh, a police department spokesman said.

The woman, who belongs to an affluent Dalit family from Ahar village in Panipat district, alleged that her husband, a Jat from Naru-Kheri village in Karnal, had been harassing her to bring more dowry ever since the two got married in April 2009, the spokesman said.

Islamabad, May 05: Pakistani Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud has written a letter to the sister of Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani convicted for attempted murder by an American court, saying he would carry out a “memorable” attack against the US.

The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan chief “threatened a memorable response against the United States” in the letter he wrote to Fouzia Siddiqui nearly two months ago, Dawn News channel reported.

New Delhi, May 05: West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee today met Home Minister P Chidambaram and is understood to have discussed about Maoist violence and the ongoing operations to tackle them.

During their 20-minute meeting, the two leaders are believed to have discussed the issue of political support being allegedly given to the Maoists in West Bengal.

The Chief Minister, however, refused to divulge anything about his discussions with Chidambaram.

Tiger reserves to remain open for tourists

New Delhi, May 05: Government today ruled out any plan for banning tourism in tiger reserves in the country.

“There is no intention in the government to stop tourism at tiger reserves. There is no such plan or proposal,” said a senior Tourism Ministry official.

Some media reports had said that the government was planning to stop tourism activities in the country’s tiger reserves to protect the big cat.

Govt trying to reduce Haj subsidy, says Krishna

New Delhi, May 05: The government is striving to reduce Haj subsidy, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna said today.

While replying to a question in Lok Sabha, Krishna said in 2009, government has taken a decision to increase the air fare for pilgrims going through Haj Committee from Rs 12,000 to Rs 16,000 per person.

According to reports, in 2007 the Haj subsidy paid by the government was Rs 5.95 billion, and for 2008 it was Rs 7 billion.

On whether government has received complaints of corruption in the Haj arrangements, Krishna replied in the negative.

Ethiopian jet crash: Report points to pilot error

Beirut, May 05: A preliminary report on the crash of an Ethiopian airliner in Lebanon in which all 90 people on board died earlier this year clearly points to pilot error, according to a source close to the probe.

“The accident was due to a series of errors on the part of the pilots who failed to take into account the signals emitted by the plane’s instruments,” the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told.

Illegal outposts: Israel SC gives 90 days to govt

Jerusalem, May 05: In a rebuke to the government, Israeli Supreme Court today asked the State to explain within 90 days why it has not followed through with evacuating every illegal outpost built on Palestinian land in the West Bank.

The three-judge panel asked the state “to explain within 90 days why the state will not enforce the demolition orders issued for the compound in question.”

Bill in RS for quick disposal of environment related issues

New Delhi, May 05: The National Green Tribunal Bill, which envisages quick and effective disposal of environment related issues, was introduced in the Rajya Sabha today with members asking for more powers to the proposed body for settling civil disputes over environment related issues.

Initiating the discussion on the bill, Bal Apte (BJP) said tribunals are not easily approachable. The intention of the bill was good but the legislation was defective, he said.
