Fast track courts:6.77 lakh cases

New Delhi, April 27: Minister of Law and Justice on Tuesday informed the Rajya Sabha that Fast track courts have been a success since it’s beginning

M.Veerappa Moily, on Tuesday said out of 35.85 lakh cases transferred to Fast Track Courts since inception, 29.08 lakh cases have been disposed off leaving 6.77 lakh cases pending for disposal.

He said in a written reply at Rajya Sabha that the information was received from the State Governments/Registries of the High Courts.

Shivraj to be new Rajasthan Governor

Jaipur, April 27: Punjab Governor Shivraj Patil, who has been given the additional charge of Rajasthan following the demise Prabha Rao, will take oath of office and Constitution here at Raj Bhawan tomorrow.

Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court Jagdish Bhalla will administer the oath to Patil at 11 am, a government official said today.

Patil is holding the additional charge of the state following the demise of Rao, who died of heart attack in New Delhi on yesterday.

Match-fixing in IPL is serious charge

Mumbai, April 27: India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said on Tuesday that allegations of match-fixing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) are serious and should be handled carefully.

“Match-fixing is the worst allegation against a cricketer… anyone involved should be punished. Cricket should be clean,” said Dhoni, who led the Chennai Super Kings to their maiden triumph in the third IPL tournament here on Sunday.

Thimphu, April 27: Madhuri Gupta was “passing information” to the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) of Pakistan, an Indian official said on Tuesday, shortly after the junior Indian diplomat in Islamabad was arrested in New Delhi on charges of spying.

Food poisoning kills three of family

Raipur, April 27: Three members of a family died Tuesday due to food poisoning and seven others were in critical condition in Chhattisgarh’s Raipur district, police said.

The victims had dinner late Monday night in Lohrasi village, some 25 km from here, and began vomiting.

All the 10 members were rushed to Raipur-based Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Government Hospital late Monday night and three of them died Tuesday early hours.

Haryana exempts golf clubs from entertainment levy

Chandigarh, April 27: Golf clubs in Haryana have been exempted from payment of entertainment duty, the state cabinet decided here Tuesday.

An official spokesman said that the decision was taken to promote golf in the state.

The state cabinet also decided to reduce the rate of entertainment duty on fun parks and cultural activities from existing 25 percent to 10 percent.

Unclean water kills 4,000 children daily: World Bank

Surabaya (Indonesia), April 27: More than 4,000 children die every day across the globe due to lack of sanitation and access to clean water, the World Bank said here Tuesday.

The bank’s communication officer Chrishtopher M. Walsh said most of the deaths occurred in the developing world, Xinhua reported.

BJP takes note of Soren support to UPA on cut motion

New Delhi, April 27: Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren’s sudden support to the UPA government on the cut motions in the Lok Sabha today set off speculation that there may be new power equations in the state and alter his relation with coalition partner BJP.

A shocked BJP said after the vote that it has taken note of Soren’s act in Parliament of “ditching” the coalition partner. Soren, still a member of the Lok Sabha, made a rare appearance to spring a surprise on BJP.

“We have taken note of it,” a senior BJP leader said outside Parliament, indicating that Soren could face trouble.

Wrestler appointment as DSP

Chandigarh, April 27: Haryana state cabinet today gave its approval to the appointment of international wrestler Ramesh Kumar Gulia for the post of DSP under sports quota in state police.

As per provision to sub-rule (1) of Rule 6 Haryana Police Service Rules, 2008, six per cent of total posts of DSP are reserved for outstanding sports persons of Haryana who win a gold, silver or bronze medals in Olympic Games or those sports persons who bring extra ordinary laurels to the state.

False quake alert SMS creates panic in NE

Shillong, April 27: Officials of Meteorological department have rubbished an SMS which was being circulated with an alert that an earthquake would hit North East region tonight.

People across the region today received SMS which said, “Important msg ? The Seismological Dept for Northeast, Shillong have announced that a major earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale may hit Northeast at around 11:17 pm tonight”.

Rubbishing the SMS, Seismological Observatory in-charge here A C Lyngdoh told PTI they did not issue any such warning.

Man arrested with 20 kg Ganja in Anand

Anand, April 27: A man was today arrested for possessing 20 kg Cannabis (Ganja) from the Anand railway station here today, police said.

Vijay Mochi has been arrested with a bag containing the narcotics, they said, adding he came here from Karnataka and was going to Ahmedabad.

According to police, forensic experts have also confirmed that the substance in Mochi’s bag was Cannabis.

The drugs have been seized and interrogation of the accused is on, they said.

SIT denies Togadia lawyers’ charges

Ahmedabad, April 27: The Special Investigation Team (SIT), probing some of the 2002 riot cases, today denied the allegation by VHP leader Pravin Togadia’s lawyers that one of the members of the Supreme Court-appointed agency had humiliated them when they went to meet him on April 24.

In a statement here, the Deputy Superintendent of Police (administration), SIT, said, “(the allegations) are not only false, but have been deliberately made with a view to malign the SIT.”

Congress hits out at Modi for his remarks on Ambedkar

Ahmedabad, April 27: Gujarat Congress leaders today hit out at Chief Minister Narendra Modi for his remarks on B R Ambedkar embracing Buddhism.

During his speech at the launch of his book yesterday, which is a compilation of Modi’s articles and speeches on Ambedkar and social issues, Modi had said Ambedkar embraced Buddhism instead of Islam or Christianity because these religions were not originated in India.

According to Congress leaders, Modi has misinterpreted Ambedkar’s social, political and religious views.

TRS to retain separate identity

Hyderabad, April 27: TRS will never merge with any other party and will continue as the “sole voice” of Telangana people even if statehood is granted to the region, party chief K Chandrasekhar Rao said today.

“TRS will retain its identity and existence under any circumstances. It will never merge with any other party,” he told a gathering at the party headquarters here.

His remarks assume significance in the wake of comments by TDP leaders that Rao would merge TRS with the Congress in return for formation of a separate Telangana.

Paramilitary forces face shortage of bullet proof jackets

New Delhi, April 27: The paramilitary forces in the country face a shortage of 87,121 bullet proof (BP) jackets, parliament was informed Tuesday.

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), primarily tasked with internal security duties, faces a shortage of 40,069 BP jackets. It is followed by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which guards public sector undertakings and establishments of national importance, with shortage of 15,127 BP jackets. The elite National Security Guards (NSG) face a shortage of 1,725 BP jackets.

10 militants killed in Pakistan

Islamabad, April 27: At least 10 militants were killed Tuesday in clashes with security forces in Orakzai and Khyber tribal regions in northwest Pakistan, officials said.

Five militants were killed when security forces attacked militant hideouts in Bezot area of Orakzai, Xinhua reported, citing officials.

In Mashti and Ferozkhel areas of Orakzai, five militants were arrested and four others injured in clashes with the Pakistani forces.

IPL can survive on its own: Indian skipper M S Dhoni

New Delhi, April 27: Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni today sought to steer clear of the raging IPL controversy but said the high-profile Twenty20 league has the capability to survive on its own.

Dhoni refused to dwell into the specifics of the raging controversy but hoped that things would be sorted out in time before the start of the next season.

“IPL as a brand can survive on its own. But you have to come up with some innovative ideas every time to make it better. No individual but few brains will work together to pull off sensational ideas,” Dhoni said.

IT submits progress report to HC on Koda scam

Ranchi, April 27: The IT department today submitted to the Jharkhand High Court a progress report of its probe into DA cases against former chief minister Madhu Koda and several of his former Cabinet colleagues.

The counsel of the IT handed over a sealed cover containing the progress report to the division bench headed by Chief Justice Gyan Sudha Mishra.

The Enforcement Directorate, however, sought some more time from the division bench headed by Mishra to submit the same.

Lalu not honest on price rise issue: Nitish

Patna, April 27: Accusing Lalu Prasad of “being hand-in-glove” with Centre on the issue of price rise, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today said the RJD chief’s support to ‘Bharat bandh’ was “nothing but an eyewash”.

“In fact, Prasad is not honest on the issue of price rise. On one hand, he is continuing support to UPA at Centre and on the other he is engaged in high political drama by launching an agitation against Centre on the issue of price rise,” Kumar told reporters here.

Union Carbide adhered to safety norms, court told

Bhopal, April 27: The Union Carbide today submitted that maintenance and safety norms were properly adhered to in the factory and refuted the charge that company had decided to shift the “plant in bad shape” prior to the 1984 tragedy.

Denying CBI charges that lack of maintenance and safety measures led to the world’s worst industrial disaster, defence counsel D Prasad told Chief Judicial Magistrate Mohan P Tiwari, that all steps were adhered to keep the factory in a proper shape.
