Sibal, Prasad attack Maya for criticising RTE law

New Delhi, April 05: Congress and BJP on Sunday attacked Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati for criticising the lack of funds for the Right to Education Act, saying the state government spent more on building statues and employing security men to guard them.

“Uttar Pradesh (government) has loads of money that they are spending on memorials. If that very money was to be diverted to empower the children of Uttar Pradesh and of course the children of India, perhaps that would be money better spent,” HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said, reacting to Mayawati’s remark in Lucknow yesterday.

Indians on death row in UAE; Lawyers engaged for appeal

Patiala, April 05: Government on Sunday said it has engaged prominent lawyers of UAE to file an appeal in higher court against the sentencing of 17 Indians on death row for allegedly killing a Pakistani.

The Indian Consulate in Sharjah has been taking services of prominent lawyers and an appeal to the higher court will be made within the prescribed period of two weeks from the date of judgment by the lower court, Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur said here.

Suspected Maoists kill CPI(M) leader

Lalgarh, April 05: Chidambaram’s visit to Lalgarh, suspected Maoists on Sunday killed a CPI(M) student wing leader at nearby Binpur in West Midnapore district.

Partha Biswas (26), Secretary of Students’ Federation of India (SFI), Belpahari Zonal Committee, was shot at by six suspected Maoists, who came on three motorcycles, at Malabati village at about 6 pm, police said.

Biswas, who suffered bullet injuries in head and chest, died on way to Jhargram Hospital.

Centre to implement Nat Knowledge Net proj

New Delhi, April 05: A Rs 6000 crore National Knowledge Network programme will be implemented in the next five years to facilitate interlinking of agricultural, medical colleges, research institutions and other academic organisations, Union Communications and IT Minister A Raja said.

The Network’s purpose was to enable research students and others to have interaction and keep themselves abreast of development in their respective areas.

No letter to seek CBI probe into illegal mining says CM

Karnataka, April 05: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa has said he had not received any letter from any Central minister to seek CBI probe into illegal mining in the state.

His comments come in the wake of a satellite survey which was conducted by a Survey of India team in Obulapuram Mining area in Andhra Pradesh following a Supreme Court directive to verify allegations of illegal mining.

Tourism Minister Janardhana Reddy, who owns Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) and was also present, said he was confident that he would come clean in the survey.

4 more miners pulled alive from China mine

Xiangning, April 05: Nine miners were pulled to safety early Monday after spending more than a week trapped in a flooded coal mine in northern China, a rescue that had seemed beyond hope for days before crews heard someone tapping from deep underground.

The first survivor was brought to the surface at 40 minutes past midnight Monday, 179 hours after the Wangjialing mine filled with water and trapped 153 people. A crowd of rescue workers, miners and security workers outside the entrance of the mine shaft clapped as the miners were carried out.

Baby born outside hospital and died

Jaipur, Apr 4: In a shocking medical negligence, a woman delivered a premature baby outside a hospital on Saturday, April 03. The newborn died just minutes after the delivery.

Meena, who was six months pregnant, had gone for check up along with her husband Ramratan to Government Janana hospital in Chandpole locality.

When she reached the hospital, she started feeling pain. Her husband said that that he immediately rushed inside the hospital to seek help but the hospital staff provided no assistance.

The citation issued by the Guinness World Records Ltd, reads, “The record for the largest simultaneous sing-along was organised by The Art of Living Foundation (India) and involved 104,637 participants singing ‘Vande Mataram’, India’s national song, at Antarnaad in Pune, India on 12 January 2010”.

Nine rescued alive from flooded China mine

Beijing, April 05: Nine workers were rescued from a Chinese coal mine on Monday, more than a week after being trapped with 144 others after an underground flood, in what state media hailed as a miracle.

Live footage on state-run China Central Television from the vast mine in the northern province of Shanxi showed the men being brought to safety and rushed to hospital in ambulances after their ordeal.

DU professor detained for suspected Maoist links; released

New Delhi, April 05: A Delhi University professor was today detained by police for his suspected links with Maoists, including arrested leader Khobad Ghandy, police sources said here.

Sunil Mandiwal, an assistant professor with Dayal Singh College, was questioned for two hours before he was released, the sources said.

Police officer accidentally shoots 2 colleagues

Chhattisgarh, April 05: A Chhattisgarh Police officer Sunday accidentally shot two of his colleagues when he pressed the trigger of his service revolver while cleaning the weapon, an official said. The victims are in a critical condition.

The incident took place at Keshkal police station in Maoist-affected Bastar district, some 200 km south of capital Raipur.

Situation peaceful in riot-hit areas of Hyderabad

Hyderabad, April 05: Situation in riot-hit areas of Old City in Hyderabad remained peaceful for the third consecutive day on Sunday with authorities deciding to relax curfew for nine hours from Monday.

“Curfew will be relaxed from 8 am to 5 pm in all the zones from tomorrow. The situation will be reviewed on a regular basis and once it is normal, the curfew will be lifted completely,” Hyderabad City Commissioner of Police, A K Khan, told reporters in Hyderabad on Sunday.

Magnitude-7.2 quake strikes near U.S.-Mexico border

Mexico City, April 05: One of the strongest earthquakes to hit Southern California in decades shook tens of millions of people in two countries and three States on Sunday, swaying buildings from Los Angeles to Phoenix to Las Vegas. At least one person in Mexico was killed and others were feared trapped in their homes.

The 7.2-magnitude quake struck at 3.40 pm PDT (6.20 am IST), about 30 km southeast of the border city of Mexicali, Mexico, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Three aftershocks of magnitudes 5.1, 4.5 and 4.3 followed within the hour.

Women suffer bad eyesight for not wearing glasses

London, April 05: Millions of British women are suffering from poor vision because they are too vain to wear spectacles, a study has revealed.

The research revealed a quarter of females who need glasses refuse to get their eyes tested and would rather squint or suffer blurred vision than ‘ruin their appearance’ with spectacles, reports dailymail.co.uk.

Approximately 7.5 million women are struggling with eyesight which they know is well below 100 percent.

Naxals are cowards, says PC; rules out military action

Lalgarh, April 05: On his first visit to this Naxal stronghold, Home Minister P Chidambaram on Sunday ruled out military action against Maoists, saying police and paramilitary will continue their operations even as he made a fresh offer of dialogue with extremists if they abjure violence.

Describing Naxals as “cowards” hiding in the forests, he said if they were really interested in the welfare of the people they should give up violence and come for talks.

Women quit careers due to unhelpful husbands

London, April 05: A new study has shown that women are compelled to give up their careers as their husbands refuse to share household work with them.

The research led by Cornell University showed that women are more likely to give up their high flying jobs or take on less demanding roles if their husbands work long hours.

Youngjoo Cha, a sociologist from Cornell University, found that women whose husbands work more than 60 hours per week are 42 percent more likely to leave their jobs than women whose partners work fewer hours.

Strong earthquake hits western Mexico

Washington, April 05: An earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale hit the Mexican peninsula of Baja California Sunday afternoon, the US Geological Survey said.

The depth of the strong quake was reported at at 10 km, Xinhua reported quoting the the USGS.

The epicentre of the earthquake is located in Baja California, the northernmost state of Mexico that boarders US state of California.

The tremor was felt in southern California and sent high-rises in major cities like Los Angeles and San Diego rocking back and forth.

There was no immediate report of casualties or damage.
