Gaza teenager ‘shot dead’ by Israelis returns home

Gaza City, April 05: A Palestinian teenager who went missing near the Gaza border last week and was believed to have been killed by Israeli troops has returned home safe after being detained in Egypt, he said Sunday.

Mohammed al-Faramawi, 15, said he had gone with some friends to Gaza’s defunct airport near the borders with Israel and Egypt last Monday “for fun” when they found a smuggling tunnel to Egypt and crawled through it.

They were promptly arrested by Egyptian security forces on the other side and held for several days.

Germany admits troops killed six Afghan soldiers

Berlin, April 05: Germany’s Defence Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg admitted Sunday that German troops mistakenly killed six Afghan soldiers at the weekend, and expressed condolences for the deaths.

The German troops were en route to reinforce others under attack and had opened fire on a civilian vehicle that had ignored warnings to halt and in which the Afghans were travelling, the head of the German armed forces said.

Dozens of trapped miners freed in China ‘miracle’

Xiangning, April 05: Dozens of Chinese miners were pulled out alive after being trapped for more than a week in a flooded coal mine, sparking cheers among the hundreds of rescue workers who had raced to save them and almost given up hope.

A live state television broadcast counted off the number of survivors — now up to 55 — as miners wrapped in blankets were hurried to ambulances that sped to nearby hospitals.

Elderly Swiss-born man kidnapped in Philippines: police

Zamboanga, April 05: Gunmen wearing police uniforms kidnapped an elderly Swiss-born man from his home in the restive southern Philippines where he had lived for decades, authorities said on Monday.

While no-one immediately claimed responsibility for the abduction of Charles Reith, 72, Muslim militants and bandits have conducted many kidnappings of foreigners in the area over the past decade.

The local military and police said at least eight gunmen raided Reith’s beachside home on the outskirts of Zamboanga, a major port city in the south, on Sunday night.

S Korea seeks US help to probe warship sinking

Seoul, April 05: South Korea said on Monday it wants US experts to help investigate the mysterious blast which tore a warship in two near the tense North Korean border with the apparent loss of 46 sailors.

President Lee Myung-Bak said however that Seoul would not rush its probe into the March 26 sinking of the corvette because the world was watching the outcome.

“Given the examples of disasters in various advanced nations, accuracy is more important than speed in determining the cause of this kind of big incident,” he said in a radio address.

Over 400,000 students back to school in Chile

Santiago, April 05: More than 400,000 students will resume classes Monday in schools across Chile after a devastating earthquake destroyed large areas of the central and southern regions of the country, a minister said.

President Sebastian Pinera had set a deadline of two months within which to re-establish normalcy in healthcare, education and road transport in the most affected zones after the February 27 earthquake, Education Minister Joaquin Lavin said.

Bangalore, April 05: Delhi captain Gautam Gambhir, who saw his side take sole possession of the second spot on the league tables after his side beat the Anil Kumble-led Royal Challengers Bangalore, said that his side had played good cricket.

Hyderabad, April 05: In a startling revelation, Ayesha Siddiqui, who claims to be the wife of Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik, claimed that she was pregnant with the cricketer’s child and had a miscarriage.

As per a report published in leading English daily, Ayesha claimed that she shared an ‘intimate’ relationship with Shoiab. She, however, refused to divulge the details about her pregnancy and miscarriage, the only thing she said was that one Dr. Fatima of Hyderabad was her gynecologist.

Karzai steps up attack against US war policy

Kabul, April 05: Afghan President Hamid karzai says there will be no military operation in the southern province of Kandahar unless the Afghan people support it.

In a meeting with local officials in Kandahar, Karzai promised to consult tribal leaders before any US-led military offensive in the region.

He said any such move would depend on the Afghan people’s full agreement and permission.

This is while US-led alliance prepares to launch its next offensive, dubbed Omid, in Kandahar starting June.

‘Hezbollah won’t be defeated through non-military means’

Gaza, April 05: The director of Hezbollah’s office of international relations, Nawaf al-Moussawi, has ridiculed the idea of the enemy seeking to defeat the resistance through non-military means.

Syria-Israel talks unlikely, French diplomats say

Jerusalem, April 05: French diplomats have informed President Nicolas Sarkozy there is no chance that Paris can initiate meaningful talks between Israel and Syria any time soon.

Two senior diplomats made the conclusion after visiting the Middle East to investigate the possibility of French mediation between the two sides, the Israeli daily Haaretz reported.

Hamas says Feyadh should stand trial

Gaza, April 05: Hamas has called for Palestinian caretaker Prime Minister Salam Feyadh to be tried in a court of law, arguing that he has undermined the Palestinian cause.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Hamas accused Feyadh of working against the interests of the Palestinian nation with regard to the issues of the final status of Jerusalem al-Quds, the Palestinians’ right of return to their homeland, and the exact demarcation of borders.

Ahlu Sunnah claims battlefield victory over al-Shabab

Mogadishu, April 05: Heavy clashes have broken out between two rival militant groups in central Somalia, leaving at least 17 people dead and 20 injured.

The fierce fighting between fighters loyal to al-Shabab and their archrivals Ahlu Sunnah began in the Rage Ele area in Middle Shabelle on Saturday night and continued Sunday, a Press TV correspondent reported.

“We attacked the area and overpowered al-Shabab fighters,” Ahlu Sunnah spokesman Sheikh Muse Huseein said.

Web chats point to al-Qaida’s Indonesian links

Jakarta, April 05: It plays out like any ordinary chat between friends on Yahoo Messenger, but the subject matter is chilling: “thekiller” is looking to mesh his Indonesian militant network more deeply with al-Qaida in its Pakistani heartland.

“Come to Pak,” he is told by “SAIF-a”, the Pakistani at the other end. “The seniors say, send one of your boys here to represent your group.”

But beware, “SAIF-a” warns. With the U.S. stepping up its rocket attacks, “The brothers are very worried, in Waziristan all missiles hit very accurately. It means someone inside is involved.”

Second Moscow suicide bomber was teacher: Report

Moscow, April 05: A Russian newspaper quotes a man as saying that one of the Moscow suicide bombers may have been his daughter, a 28-year-old teacher named Maryam Sharilova.

Novaya Gazeta quotes Rasul Magomedov as saying that a photograph of the suicide bomber looks like his daughter and that she was wearing the same red scarf the last time he saw her.

The woman disappeared from her home in the southern province of Dagestan the day before the March 29 attacks.

The attack by two female suicide bombers killed 40 rush-hour commuters.

N Korea’s Kim hosts diplomat banquet amid China visit hopes

Beijing, April 05: Kim Jong-II has hosted a dinner party for the new Chinese ambassador to North Korea, state media said on Sunday, amid reports the reclusive leader was set to visit Beijing.

The dinner Saturday was attended by top North Korean military and party officials, the country’s official Korean Central News Agency said.

When Kim appeared with new Chinese ambassador Liu Hongcai, “all the participants warmly welcomed him with highest tribute”, it said.

Two killed, 35 injured in Iraq car bombing

Mosul, April 05: Two people were killed and 35 injured in a car bomb explosion near a police patrol in Iraq’s northern city of Mosul, police said.

A booby-trapped car parked near a marketplace in the Wadi Hajar neighbourhood in southern Mosul exploded on Sunday evening near a passing police patrol, Xinhua reported quoting the police.

The blast also destroyed a nearby old building and damaged several others.

Mosul, some 400 km north of Baghdad, has been a stronghold of insurgent groups and al Qaeda fighters in the war-torn country.

Baghdad suicide blasts target embassies; 35 dead

Baghdad, April 05: Suicide attackers detonated three car bombs near embassies in Baghdad on Sunday, killing at least 35 people and wounding more than 200 in back-to-back attacks, authorities said.

The bombings came two days after a chilling execution-style attack by gunmen who raided homes south of Baghdad, killing 24 people, many of them believed to be anti-al-Qaida fighters.

The rise in bloodshed after a relative lull deepened fears that insurgents will seize on the political turmoil after last month’s indecisive parliamentary elections to sow further instability.

Hot conditions prevail in north India

New Delhi, April 05: Hot conditions prevailed in most parts of north India on Sunday with Churu in Rajasthan reeling at 41 degree Celsius.

There was no relief for Delhiites too from the simmering heat as the temperature shot to 39 degrees, five notches above normal, while the low was registered at 22 C. The maximum and minimum recorded yesterday were 38 C and 23.1 C respectively.

‘Indo-US Reprocessing pact to be signed after formalities’

New Delhi, April 05: The Indo-US reprocessing agreement, on which negotiations were concluded last month, will be signed after the US completes certain internal consultation processes and India is through with some formalities.

“The US has to go through some processes of consultations and we have to complete some formalities after which it will be signed,” Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao told reporters here when asked about the Agreement on Arrangements and Procedures for Reprocessing.
