Bangalore, April 30: Even as the likes of Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes fight for glory at the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships this year, there will be a young Indian earning glory for the country doing a job often termed tougher than the hard fought duels on the field.

Mysore lad Sagar Kashyap (22) will become the youngest Indian to officiate at the championship, to be held from June 21 to July 4 at the Winnman’s hill village.

Ranjitha asks Google to remove Swamy video clip

Chennai, April 30: A legal notice has been issued to Internet major Google and its subsidiary YouTube on behalf of actress Ranjitha asking them to remove the video clips, purportedly linking her with Swami Nithyananda by 5 pm on May 2. The notices were issued by a Delhi-based law firm, P M Law Chambers.

New Delhi, April 30: At a meeting without aides, Pakistan Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani invited his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh to visit Islamabad and Dr. Singh said he would look forward to visiting the country, Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi told journalists here on Thursday.

Mr. Qureshi described Dr. Singh as a visionary and academic. He said the Indian Prime Minister had his heart in the right place and he was a well-meaning person. “He is a well-meaning man. He is an academic. He is a visionary. He wants to move on.”

Some policies on Muslim scarves and veils

Brussels, April 30: The lower house of the Belgian parliament approved a draft law Thursday banning the wearing of burqa in public and other types of Islamic veils, the Belga news agency reported.

However, the law criminalising Muslim women who hide their faces in public is unlikely to enter into force soon, as it still has to be approved by the upper house of parliament, the Senate.

Progress of the bill would also be wiped out if the political crisis gripping the country would lead to parliament being dissolved – an inevitable option, according to all political commentators.

New York, April 30: PM Manmohan Singh, cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, bio queen Kiran Mazumdar Shaw and author Chetan Bhagat are among the nine Indians named in Time magazine’s annual list of 100 most influential people.

The other Indians on the list are: Eye doctor Perumalsamy Namperumalsamy, humanitarian worker Sanjit Buker Roy, writer Chetan Bhagat, Indian-America doctor and Harvard professor Atul Gwande, paramedic from Toronto Rahul Singh and entrepreneur Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw.

Pak break ice; will revive peace process

Thimphu, April 30: Prime Ministers Manmohan Singh of India and Yousuf Raza Gilani of Pakistan Thursday held their first talks in nine months here and agreed to think afresh on how to “honestly” take forward their peace process stalled after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack.

During their 50-minute talks at Bhutan House here, the two leaders directed their foreign ministers and foreign secretaries to work out modalities to restore trust that could pave the way for “substantive dialogue” between the two countries.

Suicide bomber kills 2

Moscow, April 30: A suicide car bomb killed two police officers and injured 17 other people on Thursday in Russia’s Muslim Dagestan region, a local police spokesman said.

A second blast in another tense North Caucasus province later injured two police, Itar-Tass news agency reported, although the cause of the explosion in the courtyard of a house was being investigated.

In the Dagestan bombing, a suicide attacker set off the explosive after police stopped his car at a checkpoint about 100 km (60 miles) north of Dagestan’s capital, Makhachkala, the police spokesman said.

Beggar could make you a doctor

Bangalore, April 30: 51-year-old conman arrested by Chickpete police suspected of selling fake medical degrees to students from Bihar, Orissa and Assam.

Fifty-one-year-old R Raghavan is a beggar with a difference who used fake medical certificate that declared his son’s terminal illness to reach out to his patrons.

He also supplied such certificates to anyone willing to pay a price.

3 year Old Muslim Terrorist

Paris, April 30: A three-year-old was arrested as a suspected terrorist and held at a French police station for more than two hours, it emerged today.

The child is the son of an illegal immigrant from the Paris suburb of Juvisy.

Last Thursday the pair were arrested as they returned to their car after visiting a leisure centre.

Police officer claimed they were carrying out routine vehicle checks before arrested both father and son.

They were taken to Juvisy Police Station where, after 20 minutes, they were split up.

For now, patience is the password for a passport

Hyderabad, April 29: A sudden surge in the number of passport seekers, shortage of staff and software glitches have conspired to cause a logjam at the Regional Passport Office (RPO), and applicants are frustrated.

The pendency of application now stands at little over 50,000 and applicants will have to be patient for a few more months.

“There is no immediate solution.

But we are taking a series of steps and the delivery mechanism will improve in 2-3 months,” says Regional Passport Officer Srinivas Gotru.

Tech troubles add to passport woes

Hyderabad, April 29: A sudden breakdown of computer systems sparked trouble again at the Regional Passport Office (RPO) with applicants venting their ire on harried officials.

The passport office has been beset with several problems, causing delays in the processing of applications in recent weeks.

When the enquiry counters opened at 9.30 am on Wednesday, a technical snag in the RPO computers brought work to a standstill.

Some 400 applicants who had been waiting in the queue since early morning were up in arms as the temperature rose.

India on US ‘watch list’ on religious freedom

Washington, April 29: A bipartisan US panel on global religious freedom has named Pakistan and 12 other nations as “countries of particular concern” while placing India on its ‘Watch List’ for the second year in succession.

In a report to the US Congress Thursday, the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) termed India’s progress in protecting the rights of minorities as mixed and placed it on the second category watch list.

4,500 posts to be created in forest department

Hyderabad, April 29: For restructuring the forests department and ensure effective conservation of forests, the state government today decided to create 4,500 new posts in different categories of the department apart from filling of 650 posts that fell vacant due to retirements. It has also been decided to enhance the compensation to be paid to victims of wild animal attacks.

The Government has also agreed to provide 25 police parties in addition to the existing 11 police parties for protection of teak and redsanders in the state.

JMM ready to support BJP-led government’

Ranchi, April 29: The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) is ready to support a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led government in the state, JMM chief and Chief Minister Shibu Soren’s son Hemant Soren said Thursday.

“The BJP should initiate the process for a new government in Jharkhand,” he said at a press conference here.

Hemant, however, urged the BJP that the chief minister should be a tribal only.

Medico alleges rape attempt by senior

Hyderabad, April 29: A third-year medical student of a private college here has alleged that her senior attempted to rape her after she turned down his proposals for love, police said today.

The 20-year-old medico lodged a complaint with Moinabad police yesterday accusing a fourth-year medical student of trying to molest her in a room at the hostel premises of the medical college on April 24, they said.

CRPF asked to pay rs five lakh compensation to woman

Chennai, April 29: The Madras High Court today directed the Central Reserve Police Force to pay a compensation of Rs five lakh to a woman who was allegedly harassed by CRPF police officials.

Justice K Chandru directed the DGP CRPF, Delhi, and Additional Inspector General CRPF, Avadi, to pay the amount within eight weeks to Alamelu Mangai who had filed the petition seeking compensation.

The petitioner submitted that she was married to a CRPF constable posted in Tripura and was staying alone with her three children at the CRPF quarters in Avadi for more than three years.

Terror intelligence puts Hyderabad on high alert

Singh tells Gilani to rein in LeT founder Hafiz Saeed

Thimphu, April 29: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today asked his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani to rein in 26/11 mastermind and Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed, saying his free movement was not conducive to the atmosphere of peace and stability in the region.

Prime Minister (Manmohan Singh) mentioned “deep concern about Hafiz Saeed and the way he is allowed to roam free and engage in communication not conducive (to the relationship between India and Pakistan),” Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao told reporters here.

Orissa to formulate climate change action plan

Bhubaneswar, April 29: Frequently hit by natural calamities, Orissa government is all set to formulate a climate change action plan for the state.

“We will have a comprehensive state climate change action plan within a month,” Orissa Forest and Environment Secretary U N Behera told reporters after a high-level co-ordination committee meeting for finalisation of draft of the plan.

The meeting chaired by chief secretary T K Mishra deliberated on the reports of 11 working groups which submitted their reports on the climate change action plan.

Terror strike ‘any moment’?

Hyderabad, April 29: Hyderabad is once again on the terror radar. A general alert from the Intelligence Bureau suggesting a possible terror strike in the state capital `at any moment’ has made the city police take up massive searches at railway stations, business establishments, shopping malls, entertainment centres among other public places. With the third anniversary of the Mecca Masjid bomb blasts approaching (May 18) police are taking no chances.

IOC supply pipeline punctured, fuel stolen

Rewari (Haryana), April 29: A supply pipeline of the Indian Oil Corporation was punctured in the district by unidentified persons who stole fuel from it.

The incident happened on the night of April 24 when the pipeline passing through a field near Hari Nagar village, 4 km from here, was punctured.

It was detected by IOC officials here, and Rajesh Gupta, Chief Controller-cum Manager of the IOC (North Zone), yesterday filed a complaint with the police, who have registered a case of theft and prevention of damage to public property.
