Allawi’s list wins Iraqi polls

Baghdad, March 27: Former prime minister Ayad Allawi’s Iraqiya list won the most seats in Iraq’s March 7 parliamentary election, the Independent High Electoral Commission said Friday.

Allawi won 91 seats in the 325-seat parliament, only two seats ahead of the State of Law coalition, led by his rival current Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki. The Iraqi National alliance came third with 68 seats.

Shortly after the results were announced, al-Maliki described the elections as “transparent”. Yet, he said he will not accept the results.

Videocon hopes the Telecom business

Malaysians protest over Muhammad cartoon

Kuala Lampur, March 27: More than 200 Malaysian Muslim protesters called on Sweden to take action against several newspapers that reprinted a caricature depicting the Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) as a dog.

The protesters burned a Swedish flag outside the Swedish embassy, chanting “Long live Islam” and “Down with Sweden” and carrying posters that read “Take some lessons from 9/11!!!” and “We fight for our prophet.”

They also burned a picture of Swedish artist Lars Vilks, who made the drawing of Muhammad’s (PBUH) head on a dog’s body in 2007 that was reprinted in papers recently.

Security forces forced to release 6 suspected Somali pirates

Mogadishu, March 27: The EU anti-pirate force has said that six suspected Somali pirates have been released after they were captured allegedly trying to flee an unsuccessful hijacking.

The BBC has reported that Cmdr. John Harbour said the Pakistani master of the Almezaan refused to testify against the prisoners. Armed security guards on the Almezaan drove off the pirates Tuesday, killing one of them.

Mumbai, March 27: On Sunday evening Anushkha had a hair’s breadth escape from what could have been a catastrophic accident while shooting for a music video for Parmeet Sethi’s Badmaash Company.

It happened at the M.T.Studio in Andheri (East) while Shahid and Anushka under the supervision of choreographer Ahmed Khan, were moving towards a pre-decided spot a little distance away from the place where a huge chandelier was hanging from the ceiling.

53 killed in twin blasts

Baghdad, March 27: At least 53 people were killed and 105 injured in two blasts in Iraq’s eastern Diyala province Friday, hours before the announcement of the final result of the country’s parliamentary elections.

‘Our latest reports said that 53 people were killed and 105 others injured by the two bombings,’quoted a provincial police official as saying.

18 mn people without drinking water in South China

Beijing, March 27: Officials have informed that the drought in South China has become so severe that wells have dried up, leaving 18 million people without drinking water.

In one village, Xiazha in Guangxi province, records show the three wells have been reliable since at least the early 16th century. Now, all are dry.

Gaza witnesses another clash

Gaza, March 27: According to official reports, two Israeli soldiers and at least four Palestinian militants were killed in fighting Friday in Gaza.

The Jerusalem Post has reported that Israeli soldiers, backed by tanks and helicopters, entered Gaza in response to apparent setting of explosive devices near the border fence. They were unsure if the soldiers walked into a prepared ambush or if they were attacked because they crossed the border, Israeli military officials said later.

Lawyer’s wife commits suicide

Ghaziabad, March 2&: The wife of a lawyer allegedly committed suicide by hanging from the door bolt in their house here. The woman’s relatives have alleged she was murdered for dowry.

According to Rajesh Dwivedi, Inspector Incharge, Indirapuram police station, Teresa (21) was found hanging from the door bolt of her house in Sector-6 area of Vasundhara Thursday night.

“At around 12.30 a.m. on Thursday night, her husband Sushil Kumar noticed that she was hanging from the bolt of the door from inside and informed the police,” Dwivedi said.

Andrew Symonds sledged me: Yusuf

Ahmedabad, March 27: After blasting 73 runs off 34 balls against Deccan Chargers, Yusuf Pathan said that Andrew Symonds had sledged him when he went to bat and that inspired him to perform well.

“When somebody from the opposition involves in sledging you are more pumped up to do well. When I went in to bat, Symonds said a few words to me and I was determined to perform with the bat today,” Pathan said after Rajasthan Royals defeated Deccan Chargers by eight wickets for their third straight win.

Yusuf said he was happy to have got the runs in front of his parents.

Results released in Iraq

Baghdad, March 27: Results released by Iraq’s election commission show a secular challenger has beaten the country’s Prime Minister in the parliamentary elections, positioning him to be the first to try to form a government.

The full election results show former Prime Minister Ayad Allawi winning 91 seats, edging out Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki as results were released on Friday for Iraq’s 325-seat Parliament.

The results mark a serious setback for Maliki but do not necessarily guarantee Allawi the Prime Minister’s post, only the right to try to form a coalition government.

NASA to launch its next shuttle April 5

Washington, March 27: NASA managers gave the green signal to launch the shuttle Discovery April 5 amidst reports that it could extend the shuttle programme till 2011.

NASA managers completed their all-day flight readiness review Friday and said there were “no unresolved” issues that could prevent or delay the mission, set to take off on Easter Monday.

“We are ready to fly,” said Bill Gerstenmaier, associate administrator for Space Operations.

French researchers ask more fund for anti-AIDS projects

Paris, March 27: The French National Agency on AIDS Research (ANRS) has expressed concern over lack of funding for new projects regarding prevention of the dreaded disease in the country.

Director of ANRS, Jean-Francois Delfraissy, told BEM-TV that the budget of the institution has not changed in the last five years, Prensa Latina reported.

Russia ready to export poultry from India

Moscow, March 27: Russia is ready to import poultry from India if the US does not resume its supplies, Russian Agriculture Minister Yelena Skrynnik has said.

India, a major poultry producer, has already expressed its readiness to supply its products to Russia, as well as Turkey and Thailand, Skrynnik said.

“At the moment, actually this week, we found out that we have excessive stocks of poultry products on our farms, so we stopped discussions by now. But, theoretically, if we need poultry, we can buy it from India,” she said after a meeting with her Indian counterpart Sharad Pawar.

Mubarak return to Egypt

Cairo, March 27: Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will return to Egypt on Saturday following gallbladder surgery in Germany this month, a government minister told late on Friday.

Mubarak is to arrive on Saturday afternoon to the resort town of Sharm El Sheikh, Information Minister Anas el-Feki said in a text message exchange. The president’s return comes three weeks after doctors in Germany removed his gallbladder.

Soap made from human fat on sale

Toronto, March 27: A Canadian store in Montreal has claimed it is selling soap made from the fat of Holocaust victims.

The shop has displayed the beige-coloured soap bar inscribed with a Swastika in a glass case with a card reading ‘Poland 1940,’ a report by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation says. The shop also sells a braid of hair which it claims originated from a Nazi ‘extermination camp.’

It is not illegal in Canada to sell products bearing a Swastika symbol of the Nazis.

US and Russia agree to new START treaty

Washington, March 27: The US and Russia have finalised the most comprehensive nuclear arms reduction treaty in nearly two decades, US President Barack Obama announced Friday.

Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev agreed on the final details of what has been dubbed the ‘New START treaty’ in a telephone call Friday and will meet in Prague April 8 to sign the deal.

UN chief hails new US-Russia pact on arms cut

United Nations, March 27: The new agreement between Russia and the US to reduce their arsenals is an “important milestone” in global efforts to rid the world of nuclear weapons, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said.

Negotiations between the two nuclear powers on a successor agreement to the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START), wrapped up Friday and both the parties agreed to sign the deal in April.

The existing START treaty is to expire in December. The new pact will require both sides to cut their deployed nuclear warheads, missiles and launchers.

Maoists blow up police station, block office in Bihar

Patna, March 27: Suspected Maoists blew up a newly-constructed police station and a block office in Bihar’s Rohtas district. They also torched 15 trucks, including eight of a private construction company engaged in road construction, police said Saturday.

More than 100 armed Maoist guerrillas attacked the newly-built police station and a block office at Tilouthu late Friday night and started firing indiscriminately. They later blew up the building using dynamite. No casualties were reported as security forces have not shifted in the building.

Chile suffers again

Santiago, March 27: A magnitude-6.2 earthquake hit northern Chile’s Atacama region, but no casualties or damage was reported.

The temblor struck at 11:52 A.M. (2022 IST) Friday and its epicentre was near Copiapo, a town 804 km north of Santiago, the US Geological Service said.

Seismologists at the University of Chile measured the earthquake at magnitude-5.9 on Richter scale.

It was the second powerful quake which struck northern Chile this month after the magnitude-6.3 temblor of March 4.

‘Tighter money, service tax may push up property prices’

New Delhi, March 27: Further monetary tightening by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and imposition of service tax on under-developed housing complexes, as proposed in the Budget 2010-11, will lead to increase in property prices, according to real estate companies.

India’s central bank last week hiked two major policy rates – the repo rate and reverse repo rate – by 25 basis points each.

Hasina visit to India most fruitful

Dhaka, March 27: Bangladesh’s envoy to India Tariq A. Karim said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s January visit to India would bolster the partnership between the two countries and chart a new success story in South Asia’s politics.

Karim described Hasina’s four- day visit ( January 10 to 13) to India as the most fruitful since 1974.
