After snapping three wickets in three overs, Kolkata Knight Riders were on cloud nine after they were asked to field first by Delhi Daredevils skipper Gautam Gambhir.

It was a dream start for Kolkata as they dismissed Virender Sehwag (8) in the first over, Gambhir (1) in the second and Dinesh Karthik for a duck in the third.

Sonia Gandhi to again head new National Advisory Council

New Delhi, March 29: In a comeback of sorts, United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chief Sonia Gandhi is set to return as the chief of the National Advisory Council, which folded on March 31, 2008, two years after Gandhi quit as its chairperson.

Gandhi will enjoy the rank of Cabinet Minister and her appointment has been made with immediate effect, an official spokesman said.

Her tenure would be co-terminus with that of the NAC.

Does Amitabh endorse Modi’s role in Gujarat riots: Cong

New Delhi, March 29: Congress on Monday hit back at Amitabh Bachchan defending himself on being the brand ambassador of Gujarat by telling him to pronounce his position on Narendra Modi’s role in the 2002 riots.

“I want to ask a direct question to Mr Bachchan…does he, as the brand ambassador of Gujarat, endorse or condemn the role of Modi and his Gujarat government during the pogrom of 2002?” Manish Tewari, the Congress Spokesperson, said in a press conference.

Obama ‘vows’ to deny al-Qaida safe haven in Afghan-Pak

Washington, March 29: US President Barack Obama, who made a surprise visit to Kabul and met President Hamid Karzai, has vowed to deny al-Qaida safe haven and reverse Taliban’s momentum in Afghanistan.

“We are going to disrupt and dismantle, defeat and destroy al-Qaida and its extremist allies. That is our mission. And to accomplish that goal, our objectives here in Afghanistan are also clear: We’re going to deny al-Qaida safe haven. We’re going to reverse the Taliban’s momentum,” Obama said in his address to US soldiers at the Bagram airfield.

Suicide bombers kill 37 in Moscow Metro

Moscow, March 29: Two female suicide bombers blew themselves up on Moscow’s subway system as it was jam-packed with rush-hour passengers on Monday, killing at least 37 people and wounding 38, the city’s mayor and other officials said.

Emergency Ministry spokeswoman Svetlana Chumikova said 23 people were killed in an explosion shortly before 8 am at the Lubyanka station in central Moscow. The station is underneath the building that houses the main offices of the Federal Security Service, or FSB, the KGB’s main successor agency.

17 Indians sentenced to death in UAE

Sharjah, March 29: Seventeen Indians have been sentenced to death by Sharjah’s Shariah Court for killing a Pakistani man and injuring three others in a vicious attack last year.

Judge Yousuf Al Hamadi sentenced the 17 men to death after all evidence, including DNA tests, showed they had knifed the Pakistani to death reported on Monday.

The victim had died of his wounds after he was stabbed repeatedly on various parts of his body and had also suffered brain damage, police said.

Mumbai, March 29: After the Swami Nityanand sex scandal thickened with the emergence of another sleaze video showing the Swami with Tamil actress Yuvarani, a majority of his disciples, both from Bollywood and the South Indian film industries, have been trying to disassociate themselves from him.

Vivek Oberoi was one of the Swami’s disciples and had been his follower from 2005, after his aunt introduced him to the spiritual guru. Now, Vivek too is trying to distance himself from the Swami.

Ahmedabad, march 29: Lashing out at those objecting to Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan’s presence at a government function in Mumbai, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has dubbed them as “Talibans of untouchability”.

Writing on his blog, Modi described 67-year-old Bachchan as a great artist with legendary humility and even taller achievements who has chosen to celebrate the glorious heritage of Gujarat even while facing a lot of criticism from many quarters. “This is inspiring”, he said yesterday.

Hyderabad tense, more forces to be deployed

Hyderabad, March 29: With situation in the old city remaining tense after communal clashes, the Andhra Pradesh government today said that additional forces, including nearly 1000 paramilitary personnel despatched by the Centre, were being deployed to restore peace in the trouble-hit areas.

The situation continued to be tense following the clashes that erupted last evening, Chief Minister K Rosaiah told the state assembly.

Google goes it alone in China censorship fight

Washington, March 28: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, in a major speech on Internet freedom two months ago, called on US technology firms not to support online censorship.

“I hope that refusal to support politically motivated censorship will become a trademark characteristic of American technology companies,” Ms Clinton said. “It should be part of our national brand.”

Israel minister vows to ‘liquidate’ Gaza’s Hamas rulers

Gaza, March 28: A SENIOR minister has warned that Israel will “liquidate” the Islamist Hamas-run government in Gaza following deadly weekend clashes that killed two Israeli soldiers.

“Sooner or later we will liquidate the military regime of the pro-Iranian Hamas which controls the Gaza Strip,” Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz, from the governing rightwing Likud party, told public radio.

“I am not setting a timetable, but we will not tolerate this regime continuing to strengthen itself militarily and providing itself with an arsenal of rockets that threaten our territory,” he added.

Rise in asylum seeker rejections raises security concerns

Australia, March 28: Australia is even closer to processing asylum seekers on the mainland, the Federal Government has confirmed, tipping the surge in boat people to continue over the coming months.

There are also concerns of a potentially explosive security situation on Christmas Island concerning more than 100 male detainees who have already been told their claims for asylum have been rejected.

The developments come after a second mass transfer in a week of asylum seekers to the Australian mainland.

Bomb attacks kill 11 in Afghanistan

Afghanistan, March 28: A String of roadside bomb attacks killed 11 civilians including five children in Afghanistan.

Five children were killed in the western province of Herat when a roadside bomb exploded yesterday, the interior ministry said in a statement.

The children were playing in Angil district when the buried device went off.

Six other civilians were killed in two separate but similar bomb blasts in the troubled southern province of Helmand.

The ministry did not give more details about the bombings but it blamed the attacks on Taliban insurgents.

At least 123 trapped in flooded coal mine

Beijing, March 28: At Least 123 workers are trapped in a flooded coal mine in northern China.

A total of 261 people were working in the Wangjialing mine in Shanxi province when underground water gushed in.

Only 138 managed to escape, China’s official Xinhua News Agency reported.

China’s coal mines are among the most dangerous in the world, with safety standards often ignored in the quest for profits and the drive to meet surging demand for coal – the source of about 70 per cent of China’s energy.

Thai PM Abhisit Vejjajiva refuses to yield to Red Shirts during TV talks

Thailand, March 28: Live televised talks between Thailand’s embattled Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and anti-government protesters have failed to end two weeks of street demonstrations.

The Prime Minister refused to bow to the red-shirted demonstrators’ demand to call snap elections, but both sides agreed to meet today at 6pm (2200 AEDT) to continue discussions.

Washington, March 28: Dov Charney, the fast-talking CEO of American Apparel, is scrambling to keep his beloved company out of bankruptcy.

Charney – whose libertine lifestyle and racy marketing campaigns kept the clothing chain controversial and in the minds of its young shoppers – had to give up a large equity stake in the operation to a private equity firm that rode to his rescue, the New York Post reported.

Obama makes surprise trip to Afghanistan

Washington, March 28: Barack Obama made a surprise trip to Afghanistan today to meet with country’s embattled President, Hamid Karzai.

Mr Obama arrived at Bagram Air Field in Parvan Province early this morning and was set to travel to the Presidential Palace in Kabul.

The US President was greeted upon landing by General Stanley McCrystal and the US Ambassador to Afghanistan, Karl Eikenberry.

Mr Obama was joined on the trip by Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, National Security Adviser Jim Jones, press secretary Robert Gibbs and Senior White House adviser David Axelrod.

Somali pirates mistakenly attack Dutch warship

Somalia, March 28: Marines have disarmed 12 Somali pirates who mistakenly attacked a Butch warship thinking it was a merchant vessel.

The Dutch frigate Hr Ms Tromp, responding to a sighting from a German patrol plane, encountered the pirates’ “mother boat” and two smaller motorised attack boats off the Somali coast.

“When the Tromp came within eight nautical miles of the pirates, two attack boats stormed the Tromp on the assumption that the frigate was a merchant vessel,” said statement from the Dutch Government.

Taxpayer money ‘wasted’ on keeping Moors murderer Ian Brady alive

London, March 28: Child murderer Ian Brady claims it has cost UK taxpayers £3 million ($4.5 million) to keep him alive on his 10-year hunger strike.

Brady, known as the Moors murderer after killing five children with accomplice Myra Hindley in the early 1960s, says he is now a 71-year-old “skeleton,” 10 years after doctors initiated a program of feeding him through a nasal tube.

Brady is being held at Ashworth Hospital, a high security hospital at Maghull, Merseyside in northwest England. He is kept alive by a liquid nutrition mix fed into his stomach twice a day.

SIT to submit report to apex court by April 30

New Delhi, March 28: R.K. Raghavan, the chief of the apex-court appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) that quizzed Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi over the 2002 riots, said the questioning was a “very big step forward” and the panel was likely to submit its report within the deadline of April 30.

Raghavan expressed his satisfaction with the work done by his team and the questioning of Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

“Definitely, it (the questioning of Modi) was a very big step forward in unravelling few of the mysteries in the matter,” Raghavan told CNN-IBN television channel.

Amar Singh says he ‘misses’ Jaya

New Delhi, March 28: Expelled Samajwadi Party MP Amar Singh today said he was “not angry” with Jaya Bachchan for staying with SP but indicated that he would prefer her to join him as she too was “unhappy” with the party affairs.

“Jaya ji says she misses me in SP. I want to say that I also miss her today on this dais,” Singh said while addressing a ‘Kshatriya Mahakumbh’ rally here.

Mumbai, March 28: The last four IPL matches will be screened live with 3-D effect in selected theatres across the country, IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi said here today.

Modi, who visited visited several cinema houses including PVR Cinemas in suburban Mulund, told reporters that it would be the first time in the country that any sport event will be screened with 3-D effect.

The four matches would be two-semi-finals, finals and the match for the third position.

EU, Libya scrap tit-for-tat travel visa bans

Sirte, March 28: The EU and Libya said Saturday they will resume granting visas to each others’ citizens, ending tit-for-tat bans imposed in a bitter row between the north African nation and Switzerland.

The Spanish presidency of the European Union said all the names of Libyans on a blacklist which banned them from entering the continent’s 25-state Schengen visa zone had been removed.

Lights out, lanterns on for Earth Hour in Dubai

Dubai, March 28: Hundreds of people, from white-robed Emiratis to foreigners in shorts, marched with small lanterns to mark Earth Hour on Saturday, as the lights went out in some of Dubai’s landmarks and most iconic buildings.

The sail-shaped Burj al-Arab hotel turned off its lights for Earth Hour, along with Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, and many other buildings and homes across the city.
