Lebanon files complaint against Israel with UN

Beirut, February 01: Lebanon’s permanent mission to the UN has filed a complaint against Israel with the UN Security Council over the abduction of a Lebanese citizen.

Lebanese national Rabih Mohammad Zahra, a 17-year-old shepherd, has been abducted by Israeli forces near the Bistra farm in Kfar Shouba region, NNA (National News Agency) reported Sunday.

Lebanon described the act as a “blatant violation of Resolution 1701, an attack on Lebanon’s sovereignty as well as a breach of the citizen’s human rights,” the Ya Libnan newspaper reported.

No fuel price hike till committee submits report

New Delhi, February 01: Petroleum Minister Murli Deora Monday indicated that transport fuel prices will not increase till the Kirat Parikh committee submits its report.

The Kirat Parikh committee was constituted for making recommendations to the government on carrying out reforms in the oil sector, including the pricing mechanism for transport fuels. The committee’s report is long overdue.

‘We want to see that the prices are not increased right now as it will have a cascading effect on other sectors,’ Deora told reporters here.

Clashes in Indian Kashmir follow boy’s death

Srinagar, February 01: Rock-throwing protesters clashed with government forces in Indian-controlled Kashmir on Monday, a day after a police-fired tear gas shell struck and killed a boy.

Police and paramilitary soldiers fired tear gas to quell the protests, which took place in at least three places in Srinagar, Indian Kashmir’s main city, said Hemant Lohia, a top police officer.

ICC asks Cricket Australia for report on security breach

London, February 01: The ICC has asked Cricket Australia for a detailed report into the breach of security that allowed a spectator to rush onto the field during Australia’s fifth ODI against Pakistan in Perth on Sunday and tackle to the ground Pakistan opener Khalid Latif.

The incident occurred in the 46th over as Australia were coming to the end of a tense run-chase. Latif was brought down from behind, but emerged unscathed; the spectator has been charged with assault and given a life ban from the ground.

David Dwyer quits as Pakistan’s fitness trainer

Sydney, February 01: David Dwyer, Pakistan’s fitness trainer, has decided to part ways with the team after two and a half years with the side because of personal reasons.

Dwyer, who is from Sydney, has been a popular member of Pakistan’s support staff and has become very close to most of the players in the side. “I have simply decided to move back to Sydney after two and half great years with the team purely for personal reasons,” Dwyer told Cricinfo.

Five killed in road accident

Raisen (MP), February 01: Five persons, including a woman, were killed and two others seriously injured when two motorcycles collided head-on at the Sultanganj-Silwani road here, police said today.

The incident occurred last night killing four persons on the spot while the woman succumbed to her injuries in a hospital at Sagar, they said.

Fever rules Mortaza out of New Zealand series

Dhaka, February 01: Bangladesh fast bowler Mashrafe Mortaza will not be making the trip to New Zealand, owing to a bout of fever. On Friday, his departure to link up with the squad for the limited-overs games had been delayed, and coach Jamie Siddons confirmed on Monday that he would be unavailable.

Lucknow, February 01: An enquiry has been initiated against Uttar Pradesh Sports Minister Ayodhya Prasad Pal over allegations that he called off his son’s marriage because the woman’s family failed to meet a Rs.5 million dowry demand, police said Monday.

Pal’s son Om Dutt was apparently engaged to the daughter of a doctor in Chitrakoot district in October 2008 but the minister has now called off the engagement allegedly over the family’s inability to pay dowry.

Rahul Gandhi begins two-day visit to Bihar

Srinagar, February 01: Three supporters of militant outfit Lashker-e-Tioba (LeT) have been arrested in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

Acting on a tip off, security forces during a search operation in the forest belt of Kali Gundri area nabbed Zamir Husain, Mohmmad Iqbal and Gulam Mohmmad Bakkard from a hideout yesterday, they said.

1984 anti-Sikh riots case: Court issues summons against Sajjan

New Delhi, February 01: A Delhi Court on Monday issued summons to former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar and others after taking cognisance of the chargesheets filed against them in two cases relating to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Lokesh Kumar Sharma sought presence of the 62-year-old Congress leader and others before the court on February 17.

The magistrate said that after perusing the chargesheets including the statements of the witnesses, prima-facie case of murder, rioting and other offences were made out against the accused.

City celebrates Rahman”s Grammy feat

Two mosques and NGO stoned by miscreants in Mangalore

Mangalore, February 01: Unidentified miscreants hurled stones at two mosques and a Christian NGO here, injuring a boy and damaging a statue of Mother Mary, a week after attacks on two churches in the State.

Canara Organisation for Development and Peace, a Christian NGO situated at Nanthura Padavu area was stoned on Sunday, causing damage to the portrait of Mother Mary, police said. The Father of the NGO Onilla D’ Souza has lodged a complaint.

Miscreants also threw stones at two mosques and a boy housed in one of them received minor injuries, they said.

Five killed, seven injured in road accident

Bijnor (UP), February 01: At least five people were killed and seven others seriously injured, when the car in which they were travelling collided with a truck on Meerut-Pauri highway, police said today.

All the victims were residents of Kiratpur in the district and were returning home from Delhi when the driver lost control over the car leading to the mishap at Deval village, about 15 kms from here.

The driver of the car and its two women occupants were among the dead.

Egypt arrests 26 suspected of plotting terrorism

Cairo, February 01: Egypt has arrested 26 suspects who the prosecutor said belonged to a cell of militant group Islamic Jihad and were plotting terrorist acts against tourists and state installations, the official news agency MENA reported on Sunday.

The suspects, arrested in the provinces of Mansoura and Dakahiliya on the Nile Delta, had firearms, ammunition and explosives, the agency said.

Gunmen kill 13 students at high school party in Mexico

Mexico, February 01: Suspected drug hitmen burst into a party and killed 13 high school students, on Sunday in Ciudad Juarez, the latest massacre in one of the world’s deadliest cities, Mexican media and witnesses said.

Gunmen jumped out of sport utility vehicles and fired at the students, who were celebrating victory in a local American Football championship, in a house in the city across the border from El Paso, Texas, in the early hours of Sunday.

Obama may scrap NASA moon mission

Washington, February 01: NASA’s plan to send another mission to the moon by 2020 may take a U-turn as US President Barack Obama is expected to propose the closure of the space agency’s programme in his new budget to be presented before the Congress on Monday.

With the release of President Obama’s budget request, NASA will finally get the new marching orders, and there won’t be anything in there about flying to the moon, The Washington Post reported.

Shahid Afridi booked for ball tampering under ICC Code of Conduct

Perth, February 01: Pakistani all-rounder Shahid Afridi, who was slapped two Twenty20 International ban for ball tampering in the final ODI against Australia, was booked under article 2.2.9 of ICC Code of Conduct and the match referee imposed him the maximum penalty for his offence.

Afridi, who led the visiting side in place of regular skipper Mohammad Yousuf, will miss Pakistan’s next two Twenty20 Internationals against the same opponents on February 5 in Melbourne and against England in Dubai on February 19.

Los Angeles, February 01: Indian music maestro A R Rahman, who won two awards at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards ceremony here, says he never dreamt of winning honours of this stature.

“Insane, eh? I never even dreamt about winning all these awards,” Rahman posted on his Twitter page after receiving the award.

He was honoured for his compositions in Danny Boyle’s fairytale drama “Slumdog Millionaire”. He won for the best compilation soundtrack for a motion picture and the best motion picture song for “Jai ho”, which he shares with lyricist Gulzar and Tanvi Shah.
