Stop showing violence, vulgarity on TV channels

Hyderabad, January 30: Justice T Goplalakrishna on Friday directed local television channels to stop telecasting programmes containing scenes of violence and vulgarity. The judge had earlier issued similar directions in a writ petition filed by Kameshwar Rao, a practising advocate who complained that such indiscreet telecast by channels had adverse effect on viewers.

BIKINIS BAN ON GOA BEACHES

Panaji, January 30: A top tourism official from the state said authorities are preparing new directives for international tourists that, among other things, will forbid women from wearing bikinis in Goa’s hugely popular beaches.

US alone in boosting Honduran ties after Zelaya’s exile

Washington, January 30: The United States will resume aid to Honduras after the country’s overthrown President Manuel Zelaya went into exile in the wake of a military coup in June 2009.

Washington’s decision comes after the ousted President was forced into exile in the Dominican Republic, as Honduras swore in Porfirio Lobo as the new leader.

“I am happy that with the visit of US ambassador to Honduras Hugo Llorens, we are practically normalizing the ties with the United States of America,” Lobo said at a joint press conference with the US diplomat.

PCB cancels IPL NOCs for Pakistani players

Karachi, January 30: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Friday announced that it has revoked all no objection certificates issued to Pakistani cricketers that allowed them to participate in the third season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Nadeem Sarwar, the PCB’s media chief, said that in future the board will only decide on the participation of its cricketers in the IPL in consultation with the relevant government authorities.

FLOODED MAKKAH ROAD

Makkah, January 30: An overflowing road in Hada on Thursday afternoon. Residents of the Makkah district have complained that the first achievement of the sewage treatment plant which began operating on Thursday was to flood local roads and cut them off from their places of work.

“They opened a pipe that was supposed to drain off water to the bottom of the Fatima Valley, not surround our houses with lakes and flood the roads,” one local said.

Drunk woman driver kills one, injures five cops in Mumbai

Mumbai, January 30: One man was killed and five policemen were injured when a 27-year-old drunk woman driver rammed into their vehicles early Saturday, police
said.

The accident occurred just before 1 a.m. when Nuriya Yusuf Ahluwalia was speeding along the Marine Lines, an official of L.T. Marg police station said, adding that a medical examination showed the driver was under the influence of liquor.

She apparently lost control of her Honda CRV and rammed into a stationary traffic police Qualis and two other vehicles – a motorcycle and a taxi.

Ancient Roman aqueduct found

Rome, January 30: Experts have located the source of an ancient aqueduct built by Emperor Trajan nearly 2 000 years ago to supply Rome.

Archaeologists and officials said at a news conference on Thursday that the find near lake Bracciano, north of Rome, was made by a British documentary crew that was filming in the area and was told by residents about an aqueduct believed to date back to the 18th century.

Archaeologist Lorenzo Quilici, an expert on aqueducts, visited the site in June and confirmed it was much older.

Ecstasy more risky for youth

London, January 30: The so-called “club drug” ecstasy is more likely than other stimulants like speed or crystal meth to kill young, healthy people who are not known as regular drug users, British researchers said on Friday.

A study of stimulant-deaths in Britain between 1997 and 2007 found that those who died after taking ecstasy were mainly younger and healthier than those who died after taking amphetamines.

UK Funds Christian Police to Fight Crime

London, January 30: In a move seen as risking to factionalize British officers, the Home Office has offered thousands of pounds to a Christian policing group that is using prayers to fight crime, reported.

“We have given the Christian Police Association a one-off grant of £10,000 to support its ongoing work to improve community safety, tackle antisocial behaviour and reduce violence,” a Home Office spokesman said.

The money would be used to fund a CPA initiative to strengthen links between local church groups and police officers to fight crime.

Power plants under attack

San Francisco, January 30: Power plants, oil refineries and water supplies increasingly dependent on the internet are under relentless attack by cyber spies and thugs, according to a McAfee report released on Thursday.

The Critical Infrastructure in the Age of Cyber-War analysis by the US-based Centre for Strategic and International Studies said the price of “downtime” from major attacks exceeds $6m a day.

“If cyberspace is the Wild West, the sheriff needs to get to Dodge City,” concluded the study commissioned by McAfee, which sells computer security software.

Nasa to get cash, drop moon

Washington, January 30: President Barack Obama is essentially grounding efforts to return astronauts to the moon and instead is sending Nasa in new directions with roughly $6bn more, according to officials familiar with the plans.

A White House official confirmed published reports on Thursday that when next week’s budget is proposed, Nasa will get an additional $5.9bn over five years.

Boat overturns in Godavari; 10 dead, 40 missing

Hyderabad, January 30: At least 10 persons drowned and 40 others were missing after a boat overturned in river Godavari in Andhra Pradesh on Saturday.

The country-made boat ferrying about 40-50 persons overturned at around 0630 hours in the river near Biyyaputeppa village in West Godavari district, Superintendent of Police B Balakrishna said.

So far ten bodies have been retrieved, he said, adding family members of the victims, hailing from nearby villagers, are at the accident site, about 30 kms from Biyyaputeppa.

Los Angeles, January 30: A California preservation panel has taken the unusual step of naming the 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing site as a state historical resource.

The vote on Friday by the California State Historical Resources Commission is part of an effort by several states to have Tranquility Base become a national historic landmark and then a world heritage site.

The designation applies to everything left there by astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, not the lunar surface.

London, January 30: Former British prime minister Tony Blair told a public inquiry into the Iraq war on Friday he had no regrets about removing Saddam Hussein from power.

Asked by the inquiry chairman if he had any regrets, Blair said: “Responsibility but not a regret for removing Saddam Hussein.”

Blair’s comments were greeted with shouts of “liar” and “you’re a murderer” from the public gallery, where relatives of some of the 179 British soldiers killed in the war were watching his evidence.

Dubai police: Killers of Hamas commander identified

Abu Dhabi, January 30: The police in Dubai say they have identified the suspects behind the assassination of a senior Hamas military commander Mahmud Abdel Rauf al-Mabhuh.

According to preliminary investigations conducted by police on Friday, Mabhuh was killed by “a professional criminal gang” that followed him in Dubai.

Police further added that the suspects, several “European passport holders”, are thought to have fled the United Arab Emirates (UAE). No names have been specified by the UAE police yet.
