Israel stops construction of mosque

Ramallah, January 27: Israeli forces have told Palestinians in a West Bank village to stop construction of a mosque there on Tuesday. The villagers of Bourin, west of Nablus, were building what would have been the Salman Al-Farisi mosque.

Ghassan Daghlas, the Palestinian Authority official monitoring settler activity in the northern West Bank, said that Israeli forces had warned contractors the building would be demolished as it was being constructed in an area under Israel’s full control.

Man rescued from rubble 14 days after Haiti quake

Port-au-Prince, January 27: U.S. troops pulled a man alive from under a collapsed building in Haiti’s capital on Tuesday as U.N. troops sprayed tear gas at survivors desperate for food two weeks after a catastrophic earthquake.

The man, covered in dust and dressed only in underpants, was rescued by soldiers of the 82nd Airborne Division from a ruined house on Rue de Miracle in downtown Port-au-Prince, a reported.

U.S. authorities identified him as 31 years old and said he had a broken leg and was severely dehydrated.

Miley welcomes a new puppy

Los Angeles, January 27: Teen star Miley Cyrus has a new pet in her life – a nine-week old German shepherd puppy.

The fluffy white dog is a gift from the 17-year-old singer and actress’ parents and has been named Mate, reported People magazine.

“It’s so great that Mate is a puppy so I can take him everywhere. But it won’t be long until he’s his full size!” Cyrus wrote in her blog.

The puppy could grow up to 125 lbs, which Cyrus jokes will make it “a bit more difficult to fit him in my Prius.”

Sush desperately seeking for Aamir

US-Russia to resume negotiations on nuclear reductions

Washington, January 27: The United States and Russia would resume negotiations on Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) from next week in Geneva, officials said on Wednesday.

The decision to resume the negotiations between the two countries follows last week’s Moscow visit of top US officials National Security Advisor General (Rtd) James Jones and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen.

Kapur slams Lohan’s smug video on India

Avoid extremes in diabetes treatment

London, January 27: Moderation appears to be the best approach to controlling blood sugar in a form of diabetes that affects many adults, researchers said Wednesday, since lowering it too far can be as risky as letting it stay too high.

The scientists also found that people suffering from type 2 diabetes who used insulin to get blood sugar levels down to near normal were 50 per cent more likely to die during the study period as those who used a combination of oral drugs, such as metformin and sulphonylurea.

‘Iran showed others how to resist US hegemony’

Tehran, January 27: Iran’s former deputy chief nuclear negotiator says Tehran’s persistence in pursuing its peaceful nuclear program has defied US hegemony.

“At the end of [President] Bush’s tenure, the US had lost its identity as a hegemonic power because it did not gain any achievements in solving major international issues, including Iran’s nuclear case,” said Javad Vaeedi, the former deputy secretary of the Supreme National Security Council.

“So Iran’s persistence in its nuclear program showed others how to resist hegemony,” Vaeedi added.

‘Iran has fulfilled its duty in war on drugs’

Tehran, January 27: Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki says the rising tide of the Afghan drug trade, which has become a prime source of money laundering in the West, is cause for serious concern.

“The growing rate of money laundering in the West is quite disturbing, particularly because of its newly disclosed links with the drug crisis in Afghanistan,” Mottaki said in Tehran on Tuesday during a meeting with Antonino De Leo, the coordinator of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) office in Iran.

Indian Airlines hijacker deported to India

Toronto, January 27: Canada Tuesday deported the mastermind of the 1984 Indian Airline hijacker to India.

Parminder Singh Saini, 46, who took refuge here 15 years ago and faced deportation to India, was put on the plane back to India earlier Tuesday, officials said. Saini was escorted by officials of the Canadian Border Security Agency (CBSA) to Toronto airport to board a flight for India.

It was not known on which airline flight he was put on his one-way journey to India.

Obama prepares for State of the Union address

Washington, January 27: US President Barack Obama is preparing to deliver his first official State of the Union address on January 27, as the United States and the rest of the world waits in anticipation.

Pundits say Obama will talk about the unemployment rate, which does not seem to be going down, and what he has done so far done for the US economy in the State of the Union address.

Saudis continue raids after truce offer

Sanaa, January 27: Houthi fighters in Yemen say Saudi air raids continue to strike northern areas of the country even after their leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi called for a ceasefire with Riyadh.

In a statement released by al-Houthi’s office, the fighters said Saudi warplanes carried out attacks on al-Maran region in north of the country.

Several other civilians were wounded in the attacks.

The air raids were launched against the fighters after they withdrew from at least 46 positions along the Saudi-Yemeni border.

Crashed plane’s pilot ‘flew the wrong way’

Beirut, January 27: The pilot of an Ethiopian Airlines plane that crashed into the sea flew in the opposite direction from the path recommended by the control tower after taking off from Beirut in thunderstorms, Lebanon’s transportation minister said Tuesday.

All 90 people on board were feared dead after the plane bound for Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa went down in flames minutes after takeoff at around 2:30 a.m. Monday.

Jerusalem, January 27: Israel will not set up a special panel to investigate last winter’s Gaza offensive, a Cabinet minister said Tuesday, rejecting a key demand of a UN report that accused the military of war crimes.

Passport Department plans to amend status of expats’ kids

Jeddah, January 27: The Directorate General of Passports has formed a committee to issue residence permits to the children of expatriates who have reached the age at which they should have an Iqama if they are staying in the country, said Brig. Salim Al-Zahrani, director of the Directorate General of Passports in the Makkah Province.

Five policemen injured in stone-throwing

Dharmapuri, January 27: Villagers clashed with police over demolition of a temple here and five policemen were injured after being attacked with stones.

Earlier, police burst teargas shells after the crowd refused to disperse from demolishing a roadside temple at Kammalapatti village, 23 km from here, police said.

Five personnel, including a sub-inspector, were injured in stone-hurling. The incident occurred after villagers started demolishing the temple and reconstructing it in front of the house of a person, who objected to it.

Embassy backs online attestation of job contracts

Abu Dhabi, January 27: The root cause of the miseries of Indian workers in the UAE originates from the problematic recruitment process in India. Keeping this in mind, the Indian Embassy has proposed an online system to control the process, a senior official said.

“The Indian Embassy has submitted a proposal to the Indian government to implement online attestation of job contracts to avoid fake contracts”, said Dr K. Ellangovan, Counsellor, Community Welfare, at the Indian Embassy here.

Fog again disrupts flight operations at IGI

New Delhi, January 27: Air operations at the IGI airport remained affected due to dense fog today, disrupting the schedules of over 50 domestic and international flights.

“Fog started enveloping the airport from 10 pm last night and runway visibility dropped to 50 metres due to which 21 domestic and international flights were diverted while 15 others were cancelled,” an airport official said.

Some other flights to Chandigarh, Jaipur and Shimla were also cancelled. Around 10 international flights arriving here were delayed.

Dravid, Yuvraj doubtful for 1st Test against SA: Kirsten

Mirpur, January 27: Key batsmen Rahul Dravid and Yuvraj Singh, both nursing injuries, are doubtful starters for the first Test against South Africa, India coach Gary Kirsten said here today.

Teacher in Tirupati ends life for unified State

Tirupati, January 27: Now, it is turn of people in Rayalaseema region to `sacrifice’ themselves for the cause of Samaikyandhra.

A 42-year old teacher T Babu, committed suicide by hanging himself at Srivari Metlu under Chandragiri police limits near here today. Some pilgrims, who found the body hanging from the tree, near an old mandapam at Srivari Metlu, alerted the police.

Initially the police thought it was a case of suicide, but later it was proved to be otherwise in the note (written in a scribbling pad) found in the shirt pocket of the victim.
