Ministry hopeful of averting indefinite port strike

Kolkata, January 03: The Shipping Ministry today expressed hope that the indefinite strike called by the port unions starting tomorrow would be averted.

Minister of State for Shipping Mukul Roy said “a meeting is scheduled to be held tomorrow between the recognised trade unions and port authorities. I expect that some solution will emerge and the strike will not take place.”

The All India Port and Dock Workers Federation had called an indefinite strike across 12 major ports across the country demanding wage revision.

Mumbai, January 03: Reliance Big Pictures has filed FIR in Ghaziabad against ‘Galaxy Cinema’ based in Kaushambi, UP (on the out skirts of Delhi) suspected of aiding to make pirated DVD 3 IDIOTS.

Based on the technical information of ‘cap code marking’ on each print of the film. Apparently the pirated DVD of 3 IDIOTS were found in Delhi and tracked by Reliance and stopped.

Chetan Bhagat: I’d happily go to court

Mumbai, January 03: Novelist Chetan Bhagat on Friday said he has no problem about going to court to solve the credit controversy in Aamir Khan-starrer hit 3 IDIOTS.

Bhagat alleged that the producers of the film have not given appropriate credit to him.

Bhagat, who is the highest selling Indian writer in English, said the 3 IDIOTS producers assured him the movie had an original script and was only 2-5 per cent based on Five Point Someone, the novel that catapulted the author to fame.

However, when the film released, Bhagat alleged that it borrowed heavily from the book.

Congress hopes Jan 5 meet yields consensus on Telangana

New Delhi, January 03: The Congress Sunday hoped that a consensus would be reached on creating a new state of Telangana at the Jan 5 meeting the central government has conevened with representatives of eight recognised political parties from Andhra Pradesh.

“We hope a consensus is reached,” Congress spokesman Shakeel Ahmed told IANS.

The spokesman said the Congress favoured creating a separate state of Telangana but wanted it to be done in a congenial atmosphere without any bad blood. “We are not against statehood to Telangana,” he said.

Govt introduces new security features to check FICN

New Delhi, January 03: To stem the circulation of fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN), government is likely to introduce a slew of security features including some in the notes itself.

Official sources said one of the steps is increasing the production of currency paper, most of which is currently being imported.

Though the Security paper mill, Hoshangabad, does produce the currency paper (228 MT in 2008), the total production is very low as compared to the need, they said, adding steps are being taken to increase the production of the Ingalio Ink in the country.

New Delhi, January 03: Actress Soha Ali Khan might have inherited acting skills from her Bengali mother Sharmila Tagore, but she says she is “a disgrace” to her “maternal side” because she can’t speak Bengali.

“I don’t know Bengali… That ways I am a disgrace to my maternal side but I am working on it. I am learning it,” Soha told here Sunday evening.

Sharmila, however, came to her daughter’s rescue.

“She is good. The thing is she is very conscientious. She can’t speak spontaneously but she does her homework and picks up the lines and then speaks them fluently,” Sharmila said.

Delhi police asked to explain terrorists’ escape

New Delhi, January 03: The union home ministry Sunday asked Delhi Police to explain how three Pakistani terrorists awaiting deportation escaped from a city hospital even as police claimed they were not at fault as they were not informed about the visit.

While Delhi Police announced a reward of Rs.50,000 on clues leading to the arrest of the three terrorists and put out their photographs for public display, the home ministry sought from the city police a report on the escape as soon as possible.

Five leap to their deaths in China to flee fire

China, January 03: Five people have been killed and seven injured after leaping from a fifth-storey rooftop in southwest China to escape a fire engulfing the building, state media reports.

The inferno took hold in the building in Guizhou province in the early hours of this morning, after a shop on the ground floor caught fire, Xinhua news agency reported.

One other person inside the building was killed in the blaze, it said.

The seven injured were being treated in a local hospital and all were expected to survive, the report said.

Britain closes Sanaa embassy

Britain, January 03: Britain closed its embassy in Yemen today, following a similar move by the United States, because of threats from a local branch of Al-Qaeda, a government official said.

“The embassy is closed today for security reasons, and out of fear of possible Al-Qaeda reactions,” the official said on condition of anonymity.

But he stressed there were “no direct Al-Qaeda threats” against the mission.

Bhattacharjee slams Chidambaram

Kolkata, January 03: West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee today attacked P Chidambaram for expressing disappointment over handling of Maoist violence in Lalgarh, saying the way the Union home minister dealt with the Telangana issue was not expected from him.

Asserting that he was not at all disappointed with the state government’s response to the Lalgarh situation, he said, “I am taking all steps to tackle the situation. He (Chidambaram) may have been disappointed, but I am not. I know how to tackle the Maoists.”
