Iranians use stem cells to treat tinnitus

Tehran, January 04: Iranians have successfully terminated the animal phase of the trial testing the efficacy of a new technique for treating tinnitus or ear ringing with the help of stem cells.

Iran is one of the countries with the highest number of individuals suffering from tinnitus in the world; the majority of these patients are war veterans and factory workers whose auditory system has been injured due to exposure to loud noise.

30-year-old kills live-in partner in Andheri, arrested

Mumbai: A 30-year-old man was arrested on Sunday morning for allegedly killing his 35-year-old live-in partner of five years
at their residence in Andheri (East).

A police officer said accused Samar Yadav killed Shalu Sameer Yadav alias Kamna Chaudhary, who worked as a waitress in Royal Restaurant and Bar on Andheri-Kurla road, because she “gave more time to her clients”.

South Korea calls on North to search for war dead

Seoul, January 04: South Korea’s president proposed a humanitarian project with rival North Korea on Monday under which the two states would cooperate in repatriating remains of tens of thousands of soldiers killed during the 1950-53 Korean War.

The reclusive North allowed US military teams into the country for several years to search for remains of US soldiers killed during the war in a bit of rare cooperation that went on despite difficult diplomatic times.

“South Korea will not forget those who gave their lives on foreign soil,” Lee Myung-bak said in a New Year’s address.

Bomb defused in Manipur

Imphal, January 04: A bomb allegedly planted by militants at Tronglaobi Bazar area under Moirang police station in interior Bishenpur district of Manipur, has been defused by army personnel, police sources said here today.

The bomb was spotted yesterday by passers-by who informed a patrol of the 16th Maratha Light Infantry personnel.

Army personnel removed the bomb and detonanted it at a safe place.

No individual or group has claimed responsibility.

Woman killed in gas cylinder explosion in Pune

Pune, January 04: A 22-year-old woman was killed and four others injured in a gas cylinder explosion today at a residential colony on Sinhgad road here, police said.

A wall of the building collapsed due to impact of the blast that occurred early morning, police said.

A few vehicles in the parking space of the apartment were also damaged by the falling debris of the second floor apartment.

The explosion was suspected to have been caused by leakage of gas cylinders meant for domestic use, police added.

Boy commits suicide inside school premises in Mumbai

Mumbai, January 04: Police suspect the boy might have taken this extreme step under pressure, since he was poor in studies.

According to police, the boy arrived at Shardashram school in Dadar at 7am but was not present in the classroom when the teacher was taking attendance.

When checked he was found hanging in the washroom, police said, adding, “preliminary investigation suggests that he was worried since he was not good in studies. This might have forced him to commit suicide.”

Maoists blow up another school building in Orissa

Rourkela, January 04: Maoists blew up yet another government school building in Rehlatur gram panchayat in Orissa’s Sundargarh district, police sources said today.

About 40 ultras entered the building of the Middle English School in the Naxal-infested gram panchayat under K Balang town, about 120km from Rourkela yesterday, and looted 50 quintals of rice stored there before setting off an explosion, the sources said.

Maoists had blasted four school buildings and a hospital besides two buildings in the gram panchayat last month.

U.S British embassies in Yemen extend closure

Sanaa, January 04: The United States and Britain kept their embassies in Yemen closed for a second day on Monday over concerns about possible militant attacks after the failed Christmas Day bombing of a U.S.-bound airliner, diplomats said.

The U.S. embassy has cited threats by al Qaeda, which U.S. intelligence agencies believe has a growing presence in Yemen. An aide to President Barack Obama has said the United States had indications al Qaeda was planning an attack in Sanaa.

Many feared dead in India boat capsize

Kolaghat, January 04: At least 19 people are feared drowned after a boat capsized in a river in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal.

Police said that the boat carrying 29 people sank in the Rupnarayan river near the town of Kolaghat on Sunday.

The passengers were said to be picnickers who hired two fishing boats for a ride on the river.

At least 10 of the picnickers were rescued after local residents reached them in motorised and traditional fishing boats.

Boats in India are often overloaded, which frequently leads to such incidents.

NDFB militant killed in encounter

Nalbari, January 04: An NDFB militant was killed in an encounter with security forces in lower Assam”s Nalbari district today, police said. Acting on a tip-off that two insurgents of the anti-talk faction of NDFB had taken shelter in Bamunditari village under Mukalmua police station, personnel of the joint team cordoned off the area and launched a search operation there.

The extremists fired at the men in uniform, who retaliated, gunning down one of the two ultras in the wee hours today while the other managed to flee, they said. A .

US soldiers die in Afghan blast

Kabul, January 04: Four US soldiers have been killed in a roadside explosion in southern Afghanistan, Nato-led forces said.

The soldiers died after an improvised explosive device went off on Sunday, a statement by Nato’s International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) said.

Also on Sunday, a British soldier was killed in a separate blast in Helmand province, officials said.

Violence in Afghanistan has reached its highest level since the Taliban regime was toppled in 2001.

Nigerian held in Indore with fake visa

Indore, January 04: A Nigerian national has been arrested from this Madhya Pradesh city for allegedly possessing a fake visa and defrauding an Indian businessman, police said Monday.

The Nigerian national, Alex Johnson, was arrested by the crime branch Saturday night on the complaint of local businessman Mohsin.

Mohsin, owner of Ultracut, a factory manufacturing iron-cutting machine, alleged that Johnson took Rs. 1.15 lakh from him on the pretext of providing 480 machines worth Rs. 22 crore. Johnson claimed to be the owner of a Nigerian company.

Aamer to be fit for third Test

Sydney, January 04: Pakistan manager Abdul Raqeeb today said pace sensation Mohammad Aamer will regain fitness in time for the third and final Test against Australia, starting in Hobart from January 14.

Aamer was outstanding during the first Test in Melbourne, where he claimed a five-wicket haul in the second innings. But he suffered a minor groin injury during that match which ruled him out of the ongoing second Test here at the SCG.

Reliance Industries raises Rs.2,675 cr from share sale

Mumbai, January 04: Reliance Industries (RIL) Monday raised Rs.2,675 crore through the sale of about 2.58 crore equity shares.

The stock was sold by Petroleum Trust — a promoter unit of RIL — at Rs.1,035 per share, and the money will accrue to Reliance Industrial Investments and Holdings, a wholly-owned RIL subsidiary, the company said in a regulatory statement.

“The financial impact will be reflected in the consolidated financial statements of the company,” the statement added.

Ranbaxy launches anti-fungal chemical in India

Mumbai, January 04: Drug major Ranbaxy Laboratories on Monday said it has launched a new chemical, Lulifin (Luliconazole), used in the treatment of fungal infection.

The company has launched a new chemical entity Lulifin (Luliconazole) in the Indian dermatology market, the pharma major said in a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange.

This launch follows a strategic in-licensing agreement with Japan-based Summit Pharmaceuticals International Corporation(SPI), which allows Ranbaxy exclusive marketing rights of the chemical in India.

Banks to take cue from RBI policy to decide rates

Mumbai, January 04: Lending rates might move upward in the months ahead as credit growth picks up, but banks may take a cue from the RBI policy before effecting any change in their rate-structure, a top banker on Monday said.

“It (interest rate movements) will depend on the RBI policy. In my view, bank credit will pick up in the months ahead…rates may move upward,” Kotak Mahindra Bank’s Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, Uday Kotak told reporters here.

17 still missing after West Bengal boat capsize

Kolkata, January 04: A day after a boat carrying a group of picnickers capsized in the Rupnarayan river in West Bengal’s East Midnapore district, 17 people including eight children continued to be missing Monday.

Twenty picnickers were either rescued by locals or swam ashore after the boat capsized around 3 p. m. Sunday.

“We’ve got altogether 17 names and all of them are still missing. No body has been recovered so far,” East Midnapore district magistrate Choten Lama told reporters Monday.

Bhubaneswar, January 04: A large group of Maoist guerrillas blew up a school building in Sundergarh district of Orissa, police said Monday.

“The Maoists have blown up a school building in Rehlatu panchayat through landmine last (Sunday) night,” Rourkela Superintendent of Police Diptesh Pattnaik told IANS.

According to police, about 40 rebels were involved in the incident.

Dhaka, Delhi hold talks over sharing Teesta water

Dhaka, January 04: Bangladesh and India Monday began talks here to thrash out a pact on the sharing of Teesta river waters with Dhaka saying that even an interim agreement would suffice. The deliberations took place ahead of summit level talks expected to take place in New Delhi next week.

Official dates of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s New Delhi visit have not been announced so far. It is likely to begin Jan 11.

Water sharing of the Teesta river will dominate the two-day secretary level talks of the Joint Rivers Commission, The Daily Star reported Monday.

Terrorists threaten to attack trains in Bihar

Patna, January 04: Security has been tightened at main railway stations and in all trains passing through Bihar after an alert of possible attacks on railway installations by Taliban-trained suicide squads, an official said Monday.

“Security was beefed up in trains and at railway stations in Bihar following a tip off about a threat of terrorist attacks,” state Home Secretary Amir Subhani said.
