Eight steel workers die in China

Beijing, January 05: Eight workers died after falling unconscious while working in a steel plant in China’s northeastern Liaoning province, an official said Tuesday.

The workers fainted Monday evening while repairing an electrical device in a small underground workshop in the plant in Dalian city,reported.

Preliminary blood tests showed no sign of electrocution but there were signs of carbon monoxide and other unidentified gases in the blood, said a local official.

Telangana protests hit rail, road transport in Andhra

Hyderabad, January 05: Transport services across Andhra Pradesh were hit Tuesday as supporters and opponents of a separate Telangana state stopped trains and buses even as an all-party meeting on the Telangana issue took place in New Delhi.

Railway authorities cancelled 89 trains as a precaution while state-owned Road Transport Corp (RTC) partially suspended bus services.

The rail and road blockade in Telangana on one side and the rail blockade in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema on the other coincides with the meeting in the national capital.

Volkswagen unveils Polo model, launch this year

New Delhi, January 05: German car maker Volkswagen, best known for Beetle, showcased two versions of its Polo cars here Tuesday, saying that a hatchback model would be launched in March and a sedan version later this year.

Unveiling the Polo and Race Polo models at Auto Expo here, board member Jochem Heizmann told reporters that Polo would play a key role in Volkswagen’s marketing strategy.

“It is an outstanding model,” Heizmann said while unveiling the two new models.

Muslim groups clash in Kashmir Valley

Srinagar, January 05: Tension gripped villages in Jammu and Kashmir Tuesday following clashes between two Muslim groups over the naming of a market place, forcing police to deploy additional forces.

A police officer said people had been told not to gather in large groups in the villages of Hagarpora, Gom Ahmedpora and Kongamdora in Baramulla district and in Magam town in Badgam district to prevent further violence.

Tension enveloped Hagarpora village late Monday after the hoarding of a Shia religious leader was pulled down.

Lucknow, January 05: Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh Tuesday celebrated his 78th birthday by announcing the formation of his new Jan Kranti Party, in which he will work as a “patron”.

“I will work as a patron for this party. The party will be led by Rajvir Singh alias Raju Bhaiyya,” Singh told reporters here.

“I will visit Ayodhya (in Uttar Pradesh) and pay obeisance to Lord Ram,” added the man who was chief minister when the Babri Masjid was brought down in Ayodhya in 1992.

5 dead, 3 injured in road accidents

Barrackpore , January 05: Five people, including a woman, were killed and three others injured in separate road accidents in North 24 Parganas and its vicinity during the past 24 hrs.

Police today said three people died on Barrackpore-Sodepur Expressway at Danga Dingla under Ghola police station last night following a collision between an Assam-bound trailor and a Sodepur-bound private vehicle.

The driver of the private vehicle and an occupant died on the spot while another passenger succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

Makhaya Ntini believes Test career not over

Centurion, January 05: As speculation grows over whether Makhaya Ntini’s future lies with a county in England, the South African fast bowler has said he believed his Test career was not finished.

Temperature dips across Himachal Pradesh; flights resume partially

Shimla, January 05: The minimum temperature in most parts of Himachal Pradesh dipped further Tuesday, the Met office here said. Meanwhile, air connectivity between New Delhi and the hill state resumed partially after the fog cleared in the national capital.

Temperatures across the hill state, except Shimla and Kalpa towns, plummeted though there was no fresh snowfall or rain in the past 24 hours, Manmohan Singh, director of the meteorological office, said.

He, however, said Shimla and Kalpa in Kinnaur district saw a slight rise in the night temperature.

‘No intel input on Headley’s visit’

New Delhi, January 05: The Goa police have said they did not have any knowledge or intelligence input regarding US terror suspect David Headley visiting the coastal state.

“We don’t know. We had no intelligence input on that (Headley’s Goa visit),” Goa police spokesman Atmaram Deshpande told reporters yesterday.

Deshpande’s statement contradicts the inputs by central agencies which had confirmed Headley’s Goa trip to recce certain installations in the state’s coastal belt.

Headley was reportedly in Goa for two weeks and stayed at Anjuna and Arambol, hot spots for Israeli tourists.

JAC leaders arrested for detaining trains

Vijayawada, January 05: The Railway police along with local police today arrested the leaders of Joint Action Committee (JAC) for detaining three Express trains at Vijayawada Railway Station for more than one hour.

The JAC comprising students and political leaders of 13 districts of Andhra and Rayalaseema Regions had given a call for ”Rail Roko” on Saturday last to exert pressure on the Centre for United Andhra Pradesh, coinciding with the eight-party meeting convened by Union Home Minister P Chidamabaram on the Telangana issue in New Delhi today.

New Delhi, January 05: The Supreme Court on Monday refused to grant relief to politician John Fernandes, accused of raping a Russian girl, forcing him to withdraw his plea for anticipatory bail.

Fernandes’s counsel, advocate U.U. Lalit, withdrew the petition after sensing the court’s mood that wasn’t in favour of accepting Fernandes’s plea and threatened to dismiss it. Apprehending that a order (giving reasons behind the dismissal) might affect his case later, Fernandes sought permission to withdraw the case.

Brazil mudslides toll rises to 85

Rio de Janeiro, January 05: The recovery of four more bodies from the mudslides that buried several homes and a hotel in southeastern Brazil took the toll to 85, authorities said.

The discovery of four bodies buried under a mudslide in Angra dos Reis city Monday raised to 85 the number of fatalities caused by rains, according to official figures.

Authorities have announced 72 deaths up to now in Rio de Janeiro, 10 in Sao Paulo and 3 in Minas Gerais. The three states are the most heavily populated and industrialised in Brazil.

Man held for trying to enter Dalai Lama’s monastery

Patna, January 05: Police Tuesday detained a man who was allegedly trying to enter a Tibetan monastery in Bodh Gaya in Bihar where the Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama is staying.

The Dalai Lama reached Bodh Gaya, 110 km from here, on a chartered flight Monday. He is to give religious discourses for five days.

Guards at the Tibetan monastery caught the intruder late Monday when he tried to sneak in. He was handed over to the police, Gaya Superintendent of Police Sushil Khopade told IANS over telephone.

Rathore faces suicide abetment charge, CBI probe recommended

Panchkula (Haryana), January 05: There was fresh trouble Tuesday for disgraced former Haryana police chief S.P.S. Rathore with police in Panchkula slapping another first information report (FIR) on him – for abetting the suicide of Ruchika Girhotra who he molested in 1990.

Rathore, who was Tuesday booked under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), could be arrested anytime now, Haryana police sources said.

PM praises Meira Kumar’s ‘iron fist, velvet voice’

New Delhi, Jan 05:Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday heaped praise on Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, saying she had an ‘iron fist beneath a velvet voice’.

‘I am pleased that the speaker facing these challenges … is a very distinguished woman, Meira Kumar, who sheathes the proverbial iron fist beneath a velvet voice,’ he told the Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of Commonwealth Countries (CSPOC) here.

Meira Kumar, 64, was elected unopposed as the first woman speaker of the Lok Sabha in June last year.

Shimla airport remains shut for third day

Shimla, January 05: The airport in the Himachal Pradesh capital remained shut for the third consecutive day Tuesday, an official here said. The air connectivity between Delhi and Shimla snapped Sunday due to a thick blanket of fog in the national capital.

“No flight from Delhi arrived at the Shimla airport even on the third day today (Tuesday). No flight left for Delhi from here either,” Anil Goswami, airport controller at Shimla, said.

However, air connectivity from Delhi to two other destinations in the state – Kullu and Dharamsala – resumed Tuesday.
