US embassy in ‘safe’ Yemen reopens

Sanaa, January 05: The US mission in Yemen reopened Tuesday following a two-day closure as security fears prompted by Al-Qaeda threats in the impoverished country eased, the embassy said.

The embassy said on its website that Yemeni security forces had addressed a “specific area of concern” in the north of the capital on Monday, paving the way for Tuesday’s reopening.

Washington closed its embassy in the Yemeni capital on Sunday. The British and French authorities followed suit, while Japan suspended consular services at its embassy.

Iraq weighing options on Blackwater guards

Baghdad, January 05: Baghdad is weighing how to best react after a US court dropped charges against American guards accused of killing 14 Iraqi civilians in an unprovoked attack in 2007, a government spokesman said Monday.

Spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said Iraq’s options were limited by the US legal system and a bilateral agreement between Baghdad and Washington.

“The US government is studying two possibilities,” Dabbagh told state-funded Al-Iraqiya television channel.

UN cuts Somalia food relief over Islamist threat

London, January 05: Attacks by Al Qaeda-linked rebels have led to the suspension of food distributions in large swathes of Somalia, leaving one million people outside the relief net, the UN food agency said Tuesday.

“Rising threats and attacks on humanitarian operations, as well as the imposition of a string of unacceptable demands from armed groups, have made it virtually impossible for the World Food Programme (WFP) to continue reaching up to one million people in need in southern Somalia,” it said in a statement.

Israel delays officers’ trip to Britain

Jerusalem, January 05: Israel has delayed a visit by senior military officers to Britain amid fears the group could be arrested there on war crimes charges, Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon said on Tuesday.

“These officers were invited by Great Britain, but they will stay in Israel as long as we do not have a 100 percent guarantee that they will not become objects of criminal lawsuits in that country,” Ayalon told public radio.

Britain’s Iraq war inquiry restarts

London, January 05: Britain’s public inquiry into the Iraq war resumed Tuesday after the Christmas break, as questions grew about the looming appearance by Tony Blair, who led the country into the controversial conflict.

Blair is expected to give evidence to the inquiry in the second half of January or early February, while his former communications chief and close ally Alastair Campbell will appear on January 12.

Yemeni imam accused of instigating ‘terrorism’

Sanaa, January 05: US-Yemeni imam Anwar al-Awlaqi, who may be linked to the botched attack on a US airliner, is accused by the United States of instigating “terrorism.”

A White House aide has directly accused Awlaqi of having links with the man suspected of shooting dead 13 people at a Texas military base in November, Major Nidal Hasan.

US Homeland Security and Counterterrorism Adviser John Brennan has also said the US-born imam might have had contact with the man who allegedly attempted to blow up a US airliner on Christmas Day, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab.

Huge tomb found in ancient Egypt burial ground

Cairo, January 05: Egyptian archaeologists have unearthed the largest tomb yet discovered in the ancient Saqqara necropolis, antiquities chief Zahi Hawass said on Monday.

One of two tombs found, which were carved out of stone, consists of a vast chamber that branches off into many alcoves. One alcove contained skeletons and pottery, and led to another chamber with a seven-metre-deep (23-foot) well.

“This is the largest tomb in Saqarra,” Hawass said. “It took me two hours to look round all of it.”

Meshaal: Hamas ‘an Arab movement’

Egypt, January 05: Exiled Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal has assured Saudi Arabia his movement is loyal to Arab states, the kingdom’s foreign minister, Prince Saud al-Faisal, said on Tuesday.

“I asked Khaled Meshaal whether the movement stood with Arabs or with others,” Prince Saud said, referring to Iran, a strong regional backer of Hamas, the democratically elected Palestinian movement ruling in Israeli-besieged Gaza.

Jordanian CIA base bomber was ‘triple agent’

Amman, January 05: A suicide bomber who killed eight people at a CIA base in Afghanistan was an Al-Qaeda triple agent who duped Western intelligence services for months before turning on his handlers, websites reported on Tuesday.

The Jordanian intelligence services, believing the bomber to be their double agent, brought him to eastern Afghanistan with the mission of finding Al-Qaeda number two, Ayman al-Zawahiri, the websites and Western intelligence agents cited by US media said.

Unheard track of Michael Jackson leaked on internet

Los Angeles, January 05: A snippet from a previously unheard track featuring the late King of Pop Michael Jackson collaborating with rocker Lenny Kravitz has leaked onto the Internet.

In a video statement, Kravitz Monday confirmed the authenticity of the recording but warned that it had not been prepared for release.

‘The version that’s out is not mixed, but it is the track,’ Kravitz said in the video. ‘The song was recorded by Michael and myself. I produced it for him, I wrote the song, and I played all the instruments on the track.

Bangalore, January 05: Director Shankar, who has been tight-lipped so far about his action-packed sci-fi Tamil film “Endhiran” starring superstar Rajnikant and Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai, reveals that the movie is almost finished and has lots of surprises in store for the audience.

“‘Endhiran’ is almost complete. 90 percent of the shooting is over,” Shankar wrote on his blog.

Three persons each have died in Patna, Kochadham of Kishanganj district, Mohania in Kaimur district and two in Sheikhpura and one each in Purnia, Gaya and Darbhanga districts, according to official reports reaching here.

PM asks police to balance duty with respect for rights

New Delhi, January 05: Warning policemen against high-handedness, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday said the law and order situation in the country was “under strain” and asked them to deal with terrorism, Maoism, regionalism and communalism without compromising on respect for human rights.

Electronics shop burgled in Jalandhar

Jalandhar, January 05: Robbers struck at a Samsung electronics showroom in this Punjab city Tuesday morning and decamped with laptops, LCD screens and goods worth Rs.30 lakh, police said.

The employees of the showroom at Namdev Chowk here found the locks of the shop broken, when they came to open it in the morning, a police official said.

“Some unidentified robbers have struck at the Samsung showroom here. According to the showroom owner, they made off with laptops, LCD screens and various other accessories worth over Rs.30 lakh,” the official said.

Powerful quake jolts Solomon Islands

Hong Kong, January 05: An earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale jolted Solomon Islands at 1225 GMT on Tuesday, the Hong Kong Observatory said.

The epicentre of the quake was at 9.4 degrees south latitude and 157.2 degrees east longitude, about 300 km west of Honiara, Solomon Islands.

Baghdad, January 05: Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has said his country would file a lawsuit against US private security firm Blackwater over the killing of Iraqi civilians here two years ago.

Maliki has rejected a US judge’s decision to drop charges against five Blackwater security guards who were involved in killing unarmed civilians at a crowded intersection in western Baghdad in 2007.

Govt to bring amendments in legislation for disabled

Stadium apprehensions led to hockey cancellation

New Delhi, January 05: Confusion reigns supreme as to what led to the cancellation of the four-nation tournament in the capital but it now appears that the International Hockey Federation denied a go-ahead for the event because it had apprehensions about the preparedness of the National Stadium.

In his e-mail to Hockey India officials in which he explained why the world body did not give permission for the event, FIH Umpires Development Manager Richard Wilson said they had concerns about the venue.

BMW group launches three luxury brands in India

New Delhi, January 05: German luxury car maker BMW today launched BMW Gran Turismo, BMW X6M and BMW 760Li and plans to ramp up capacity of its manufacturing plant at Chennai.

“BMW Group will further increase its commitments in India by bringing in more investments in the country through further capital investment in BMW plant in Chennai and BMW Financial Services India,” BMW India President Peter Kronschnabl told reporters at the 10th Auto Expo here.

Besides, there would be further expansion of the production capacity at Chennai, he said.

SC notice to TN on banned Al Umma activist’s appeal

New Delhi, January 05: The Supreme Court has issued a notice to Tamil Nadu government on an appeal by an alleged activist of banned fundamentalist outfit “Al Umma” challenging his conviction in a murder case.

Hakkim was one of the four persons sentenced to life imprisonment by a sessions court for killing Sayada, wife of Alim George who the organisation accused of blasphemy by his various actions.

AL Umma was banned by the government in the wake of a series of blasts in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore district.
