Israeli tanks target houses in Gaza

Jerusalem, December 02: Israeli army tanks have opened fire on houses and farmlands in the northern sector of the Gaza Strip, according to a report.

A number of Israeli tanks commenced firing Monday afternoon while withdrawing from an area southeast of the town of Beit Hanoun, which they had entered in the morning, witnesses told Ma’an news agency.

The area where the gunfire was reported lies approximately 800 meters from the Green Line in the farming region of Abu Sufiyah, according to local Palestinian sources.

Sri Lanka wins toss, elect to bat

Mumbai, Dec 02: Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara won the toss and elected to bat in the third and final cricket Test against India here today.

India, leading 1-0 in the series, have brought in Murali Vijay in place of regular opener Gautam Gambhir, who has opted out of the match to attend his sister’s wedding.

Sri Lanka have also made one change to their side, bringing in Nuwan Kulasekara in place of off-colour Ajantha Mendis.

China silent on border road issue

Beijing, Dec 02: A Chinese official on Tuesday evaded questions on reports that China had asked authorities in Jammu and Kashmir to stop construction work on a road near the disputed border between the two countries.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Qin Gang neither confirmed nor denied reports that China had raised objections with the State authorities over the construction of an 8-km road in Ladakh near the Line of Actual Control, the effective demarcation between the two countries.

Speaker: postponing Liberhan report debate my decision

New Delhi, Dec 02: The decision to postpone a discussion on the Liberhan Commission report in the Lok Sabha was taken by Speaker Meira Kumar, keeping in mind the sentiments of members.

Responding to the postponement issue, raised by the CPI’s Gurudas Dasgupta, the Speaker said her decision could not be debated in the House.

Intervening, Parliamentary Affairs Minister P.K. Bansal said the Hindi version of the Liberhan report, on the demolition of the Babri Masjid, would be made available to members “as early as possible” to enable a debate.

New Delhi, Dec 02: Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday had a run-in with the CPI(M) in the Rajya Sabha over an interjection by one of its members and deftly deflected criticism by the Left parties over the government’s disinvestment policy.

Mr. Mukherjee lost his temper during question hour when Brinda Karat (CPI-M) interjected even as the Minister was responding to supplementaries from her party colleague Sitaram Yechury on price rise.

China asks India to stop construction activity along border

Beijing, December 02: After objecting to construction of a road in Ladakh, China today asked India to stop building activities along their disputed boundary, insisting that till this issue is settled, the two countries should maintain “peace and stability” in the border areas.

“On the border issue, China and India have disputes,” foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang said at a news conference.

Union home ministry files affidavit in HC on ‘Love Jihad’

Kochi, December 02: The Centre today informed the Kerala High Court that it has no report about the ‘love jihad’ movement through which young non-Muslim girls were allegedly trapped into marriage and converted into Islam in Kerala or elsewhere in the country.

“The term was used in the media. The Central government has not received any inputs or suggestions about the existence of any such movement at the national level,” the Union home ministry told the court in an affidavit.

A historic visit by Manmohan: US

Washington, Dec 02: A week after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was accorded a red carpet welcome in the US, the Obama administration has termed his visit as “historic” and said both the countries had some “specific accomplishments.”

“It was really an historic visit, that we had some specific accomplishments,” the State Department spokesman Ian Kelly told.

MPs’ housing woes; Speaker calls meeting

New Delhi, Dec 02: With many new MPs unable to get possession of their allotted houses, Speaker Meira Kumar has called for a joint meeting of the Urban Development Ministry and the Lok Sabha Housing Committee Chairman to sort out the issue.

There are more than 50 newly-elected MPs who have not been able to take possession of their houses even after seven months of government formation.

16 railway under-bridges to come up in Delhi before CWG

New Delhi, December 02: A total of 16 railway under-bridges will come up in the national capital by June next year as part of efforts to ensure smooth traffic during the Commonwealth Games 2010.

Delhi finance minister AK Walia today reviewed progress of work in respect of 17 railway under-bridges (RUBs) on various railway crossings across the city and instructed departments concerned to expedite work on them.

The minister said work on 16 RUBs will be completed by June next year.

However, officials said the RUB at Sultanpuri may not be ready before the Commonwealth Games.

No malicious intentions: U.K.

London, Dec 02: British Government denied that the five sailors detained by Iran had any malicious intentions and demanded their immediate release hoping that the issue would be resolved without turning into a diplomatic row of the sort two years ago.

Four soldiers killed in truck explosion in Jalandhar

Jalandhar, Dec 02: Four soldiers were killed on Tuesday evening after an Army truck caught fire following an explosion in Jalandhar cantonment in Punjab.

The victims belonged to the motor vehicle section of an artillery unit (20 SATA Battery) based at the headquarters of the 11 Corps of the Army base here.

Army officials said the soldiers were unloading some equipment when the explosion took place in Jalandhar cantonment, some 150 km from here.

Left were ‘valued colleagues’ of earlier UPA govt: Pranab

New Delhi, December 02: Describing the Left Parties as “valued colleagues” of the earlier UPA government, finance minister Pranab Mukherjee today said it did not feel any “bondage of the Left”.

“I don’t consider there was any bondage of the Left. They were our valued colleagues,” he said in the Rajya Sabha while responding to remarks of some members that the government was going ahead with disinvestment after getting out of the bondage of the Left, which supported the earlier UPA regime.

Obama gives Karzai a time line of 18 to 24 months

Washington, Dec 02: Underscoring the need for more rapid development of Afghan national security forces, President Barack Obama has given his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai a clear time line of 18 to 24 months to achieve the goals set by the US.

No stopping work in Arunachal even if China objects: Khandu

New Delhi, December 02: Even as work on border road construction in Jammu and Kashmir was stopped after Chinese objection, Arunachal chief minister Doorjee Khandu today asserted that his government will not succumb to any such pressure.

Khandu said China has no right to object to infrastructure development in Arunachal Pradesh as the state is an “integral part of India”.

Woman proves kidnapped twins are her babies, gets them back

Chandigarh, December 02: A woman here had to prove that she was the mother of 38-day-old twin girls, who were allegedly kidnapped Monday, before the babies here restored to her Tuesday, police said.

Simran, a resident of Sector 44 here, had to show the birth certificates in the local court and take its consent, before getting her daughters back from the police Tuesday evening.

Simran called the police control room Monday afternoon and told them that two women had kidnapped her daughters, Neha and Isha, after forcibly entering her house, a police official said.

Sydney, Dec 02: Australia’s Parliament defeated legislation to set up a greenhouse gas emissions trading system on Wednesday, throwing a central plank of the government’s plans to combat global warming into disarray.

The Senate, where Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s government does not hold a majority, rejected his administration’s proposal for Australia to become one of the first countries to install a so-called cap-and-trade system to slash the amount of heat-trapping pollution that industries pump into the air.

‘Cancer of terrorism has taken roots in Pak border regions’

Washington, Dec 02: US President Barack Obama has said that the cancer of violent extremism has taken roots in the border region of Pakistan and argued the need for the US and its allies to successfully treat it.

“We are in Afghanistan to prevent a cancer from once again spreading through that country. But this same cancer has also taken root in the border region of Pakistan. That is why we need a strategy that works on both sides of the border,” Mr. Obama said at the West Point Military Academy in New York.

UN rejects punishment for homosexuality

New York, December 02: Some 80 countries still penalise homosexuals, including passing criminal laws that fuel discrimination against them, the joint UN programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS) said.

On World AIDS Day, UNAIDS said that such laws have prevented effective national responses to help those living with HIV and are a violation of their human rights. World AIDS Day is held annually Dec 1.

Suspect in US police killing shot dead

Washington, December 02: A suspect in the shocking execution-style killings of four police officers over the weekend was shot dead by a Seattle patrolman who was making a routine check of a stolen car, authorities said.

Maurice Clemmons, 37, had been the subject of a massive police manhunt after he allegedly gunned down the officers as they were filling out paperwork in a coffee shop before the start of their shift Sunday.

Tiger Woods to be cited for careless driving

Washington, December 02: Golfer Tiger Woods will be cited for careless driving resulting into car crash outside his home last week, the Florida Highway Patrol said. But the world-famous golfer will not be the subject to any criminal investigation into the incident, said police, who also ruled out any domestic violence charges.

Woods could face a fine of $164 for the careless driving citation, said Major Cindy Williams of the Highway Patrol in a televised press conference Tuesday.

Target to enrol 30 percent of eligible students in colleges by 2020: Sibal

New Delhi, Dec 02: Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal today told Parliament that the government has set a target of ensuring that 30 percent of eligible students should attend college by 2020.

At present, 220 million students go to schools across the country and only 12.4 percent of them are eligible to go to colleges. By the year 2020, the gross involvement ratio has to be increased upto 30 percent, he said while replying to a debate in Lok Sabha on the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2009.
