20 hurt as police quell Telangana protests

Hyderabad, December 07: The movement for a separate state of Telangana took a serious turn Monday as police and paramilitary forces used force to quell student protests at Osmania University and also beat up journalists.

Rapid Action Force (RAF) and police personnel caned students on the campus to foil their plans to take out a rally to the state assembly as a mark of solidarity with Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) chief K. Chandrasekhara Rao, whose fast-unto-death seeking a separate state entered the ninth day.

Hyderabad, December 07: Telangana appears to be spinning out of control with hundreds of Telangana Rashtriya Samiti activists Monday resorting to violence in Hyderabad and surrounding areas.

Hundreds of agitated TRS supporters resorted to stone pelting outside the Osmania University in Hyderabad while raising slogans for a separate Telangana state.

In a bid to control the agitated TRS supporters, police had to resort to mild lathicharge.

A group of violent TRS supporters also blocked the movement of trains in Karimnagar district.

Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha invites Kalyan for Ram temple

Lucknow, December 07: Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha (ABHM) today invited former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh to take the reins of the party to unite the Hindu organisations for an early construction
of the Ram Temple at Ayodhya.

Party’s state unit president Raj Kumar Tyagi in a press statement here said Hindu Mahasabha is an old organisation and now Mr Singh should take its reins to return its old glory.

Babri demolition not planned,Liberhan report full of errors

New Delhi, December 07: The BJP on Monday rubbished the Liberhan Commission report on Babri Masjid demolition, saying it was full of mistakes and far from the truth.

Opening the debate on the Liberhan Commission report for his party in Lok Sabha, BJP president Rajnath Singh said the report was a distortion of facts and was written with a particular political agenda.

He also accused the Commission of arriving at a conclusion based on events of a few hours, while filing to go into the events preceding the incident (demolition).

NATO to pledge forces for Afghan war

Brussels, December 07: Military representatives of NATO’s 28 member nations met Monday to pledge additional troops to serve alongside the 30,000 reinforcements committed to Afghanistan by President Barack Obama, a spokesman said.

The conference at NATO’s military headquarters in Mons, Belgium, is expected to confirm last week’s pledges made by allied nations for an additional 7,000 troops. Results will be announced Tuesday after the meeting ends, NATO deputy spokeswoman Carmen Romero said.

London, December 07: A British lawmaker has called on Muslims and all freedom-seeking people across the world to make efforts to lift blockades on the Gaza Strip and help the oppressed Palestinians.

People in Gaza are in dire need of food, medicine and fuel, the British Member of Parliament George Galloway told state-run Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) on Sunday.

He strongly criticized Western countries and the British government for providing all-out support for Israel and said in the absence of the West support for the Palestinian people, Muslims are duty-bound to help them.

New Delhi, December 07: Lok Sabha today witnessed a demand for giving voting rights to Non-Resident Indians, with a Congress member criticising the denial of the privilege to such nationals despite their immense contribution to the country”s economy. Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Anto Antony said there are 50 lakh NRIs and they are denied voting rights because of certain guidelines of the Election Commission, like a person should not have stayed away from his residence for more than six months.

Iraqi officials study delayed election date

Baghdad, December 07: An Iraqi election official says discussions are under way to set a new date for the country’s Parliamentary Elections.

The elections had been scheduled for January 16, but officials are now studying at least a six-week delay until late February or early March. Iraqi lawmakers finally approved rules for the election late Sunday after weeks of stalemate.

A senior election commission official, Qassim al-Aboudi, says February 27 elections appear to have the most support after Monday’s discussions. But later dates are still on the table.

Iran police clash with protesters in Tehran – witness

Tehran, December 07: Iranian police used batons on opposition supporters chanting anti-government slogans in a central Tehran square on Monday, a witness said.

Police and elite Revolutionary Guards have warned the opposition to avoid using a Student Day state rally to revive anti-government protests. The opposition was warned that any “illegal” rally will be fiercely confronted.

“Police are using batons to disperse demonstrators. People are chanting anti-government slogans in the Ferdowsi square,” said the witness.

US has no intelligence on Bin Laden: Gates

Washington, December 07: The United States does not know where al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden is hiding and has not had any good intelligence on his whereabouts in years, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said on Saturday.

Speaking in an interview to be aired on Sunday on ABC’s “This Week” program, Gates also said he could not confirm reports this week that a detainee might have seen bin Laden in Afghanistan earlier this year.

Wellington, December 07: An HIV-positive man infected his wife with the virus because he wanted to start having sex with her again.

The 35-year-old injected his blood into the sleeping woman, who had refused to have a physical relationship for a year after discovering he was carrying the virus that causes Aids.

He pricked her twice with a sewing needle laced with his blood, believing the pair would be ‘equals’ once more.

But he was behind bars in New Zealand today awaiting sentencing after admitting infecting another person with a disease.
