Sydney, November 02:An increased waistline is not only bad for your health but can lead to decreased bedroom activity, according to researchers.

“I’m exploring the effects of being overweight or obese on sexual relationships, both the frequency of, and intensity of sexual activity,” Frances Quirk, a professor at James Cook University said.

There are several biological and physical factors that can lead to a decrease in sexual functionality.

Suicide blast kills 22 in Rawalpindi

Rawalpindi, November 02:At least 22 people were killed Monday when a suicide bomber riding a motorcycle triggered a massive explosion near a luxury hotel and a bank in this garrison city adjacent to capital Islamabad. The blast occurred barely 500 metres from the Pakistani Army Headquarters, which had come under Taliban attack last month.

Hospital sources said 22 people were killed while about two dozen, including an Army major, were wounded when the blast occurred at 10.40 a.m., Geo TV reported. Some of those wounded were in critical condition.

AMU demands CBI probe into student’s murder

Aligarh, November 02:Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has sought a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the murder of a final year B.Sc student and the alleged role of politicians in the case, an official said Monday.

“We have today (Monday) faxed a letter to the central government, seeking a CBI probe into the murder,” Mujahid Beg, an AMU professor and member of the varsity’s executive council, told reporters in Aligarh, western Uttar Pradesh, about 300 km from state capital Lucknow.

Man eats 20 kg stolen veggies daily

New Delhi, November 02: It is a different kind of fetish all together for 32-year-old Nazim Baig of Lucknow, who munches about 20kg of vegetables daily, plucked straight from the fields, just to satisfy his appetite.

But his neighbours are not a happy lot, because Nazim steals the vegetables from their farms every night and often consumes them during dusk.

The Asian Age today reported that Nazim, who lives in Maulaganj village, about 90 km from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, eats about 15 to 20 kg of raw vegetables daily, when everyone is asleep.

Plants might help to prevent the spread of HIV

Hamburg, November 02: Antibodies that could guard against HIV infection and therefore help to prevent AIDS can now be produced in genetically modified plants, according to a team of German scientists.

The researchers say they have helped to establish the fundamental principles required to produce the HIV-neutralizing antibody 2G12 in genetically modified tobacco plants and are now providing the materials needed for clinical testing.

Every year, about 2.7 million people become infected with HIV.

Iran to review UN nuclear deal for enrichment in Russia, France

Kuala Lumpur, November 02: Iran has asked for the setting up of a technical commission to review a United Nations-drafted nuclear fuel deal which aims to resolve the controversy over Tehran’s atomic drive, its foreign minister said Monday.

The deal, if it goes ahead, would see Iran’s low-enriched uranium sent to Russia and France for further enrichment and conversion into fuel, after which it would be returned for use in a medical-purposenuclear reactor in Tehran under constant monitoring by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

US not fazed by Abdullah’s withdrawal from run-off

Washington, November 02: A senior US official says presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah’s decision to withdraw from Afghanistan’s run-off election will not have a big impact on Washington’s ongoing review of its Afghan war strategy.

President Barack Obama’s top White House advisor, David Axelrod, told CBS television on Sunday that Abdullah withdrew because polls showed the opposition candidate was likely to lose.

“He has made a political decision to withdraw from this contest and that does not markedly change the situation,” he added.

Palestinian Fatah movement’s Sakher Habash, dies at 70

West Bank, November 02: Sakher Habash who was One of the founding members of the long-ruling Palestinian Fatah movement has died in the West Bank at the age of 70.

Palestinian officials say Sakher Habash died of a stroke on Sunday. The Fatah-led Palestinian Authority issued a statement, which mourned his death.

North Korea calls for US to decide on talks

Seoul, November 02: The US needs to decide whether it wants to engage in bilateral talks with North Korea on the country’s nuclear weapons programme, the foreign ministry in Pyongyang said Monday.

If Washington remained unwilling, the Stalinist state would “go its own way”, a ministry spokesman was quoted as saying by the state-run Korean Central News Agency.

“As we have shown generosity and expressed a position that we can have multilateral negotiations after talks with the US, it is time for the US to make a decision,” the spokesman said.

Cobra Beer seeks 4.5mn pounds to develop India business

London, November 01: Cobra Beer founder Karan Bilimoria is on a drive to raise 4.5 million pounds for his Indian business after partly selling the British arm in a pre-pack administration deal, news paper reported.

Bilimoria said it was “absolutely vital” to raise the money, adding it remained to be seen what size stake in the business new investors would be granted.

He said the Indian beer market had enormous potential and he was “very confident” of being able to raise the funds.

Regulator cautions insurers on terror funds

New Delhi, November 01: Insurance Regulatory Development Authority (IRDA) has cautioned insurance companies against policy holders whose identity matches that of those on the United Nations’ list of terrorists or organisations engaged in funding terror attacks.

“Insurance companies will immediately, and in any case within 24 hours from the time of identifying a match, inform full particulars of the insurance policies held by such a customer on their books to the ministry of home affairs (MHA),” said IRDA, the sectoral regulator, in a circular to insurance firms.

Bill Clinton honoured by grateful Kosovo

Pristina, November 01: Thousands of Kosovo Albanians gathered in Pristina Sunday to welcome former US president Bill Clinton and honour his role in ending Serbian rule.

“You should be proud for what you’ve achieved in the past years, and you have done a better job, that your friends thought,” Clinton told the Kosovo parliament, which convened for the occasion.

He arrived for the dedication of a three-metre tall statue of himself, placed on the Bill Clinton Boulevard in the Kosovo capital.

Roof collapses in Lucknow, 15 hurt

Lucknow, November 01: Fifteen labourers were injured when the roof of an under-construction building caved in in Chinhat industrial area here this evening, police said.

The roof of a showroom, which was under construction, gave way trapping 15 labourers, Additional Superintendent of Police Paresh Pandey told.

All of them were pulled out from the debris and rushed to nearby Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, he said.

Two were discharged after treatment while the rest were still hospitalised, the Additional SP said adding an FIR would be filed against the building contractor soon.

‘No real’ economic crisis in Gulf states

Kuwait City, November 01: Speakers at a Kuwaiti forum on Sunday urged energy-rich Gulf states to boost spending in order to speed up recovery from the economic crisis, as well as step up financial sector supervision.

“We must activate public spending… It’s time that Gulf states activated their fiscal policies,” Ibrahim Dabdoub, chief executive of National Bank of Kuwait, told the first Kuwait Financial Forum.

The head of the Kuwait Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Ali al-Ghanem, called for the adoption of expansionary fiscal policies and provision of private sector loans.

Sudan criticises renewal of US sanctions

Cairo, November 01: Sudan criticised the renewal of US economic sanctions on Khartoum on Sunday, saying the move ran counter to Washington’s efforts to mediate between north Sudan and the country’s semi-autonomous south.

“America claims it works as a mediator and is playing a positive role in solving Sudan’s problems, and at the same time it renews its sanctions against us,” Mustafa Ismail, an advisor to President Omar al-Beshir, told reporters in Cairo.

Turkey’s PM slams imposing sanctions on Iran

Istanbul, November 01: Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday that countries opposed to Iran’s atomic programme should give up their own nuclear weapons and slammed the ‘arrogant’ sanctions imposed on Tehran.

He also said he wanted the Middle East, and then the whole world, to rid itself of nuclear weapons.

During a trip to Iran this week, Erdogan said he backed Tehran’s “right to peaceful nuclear energy” and called its approach in nuclear talks with world powers “positive.”

Iraq election body says polls at risk

Baghdad, November 01: Iraq’s electoral body warned Sunday that polls set for January will have to be delayed if procedures are not ironed out in the next two days, as a parliamentary vote on an election law was again postponed.

Lawmakers are deadlocked over the law that will govern the January vote intense lobbying from the United Nations, as well as pressure from Iraqi religious leaders and Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.

“We are entering a critical period,” Qassim al-Abboudi, a senior official in Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC), said.
