Weapon supply racket busted, 14 guns recovered

New Delhi, November 02: A 26-year-old resident of Bihar has been arrested for illegally selling guns and ammunition in the national capital, police said Monday.

Sleuths of Delhi Police’s Crime Branch arrested Manish Kumar from Rohini Sector-24 last month and recovered 12 pistols from him. Two revolvers and 86 rounds of ammunition were recovered later during the raids at his hideouts.

The police said the weapons were manufactured indiegenously in and around Munger district in Bihar.

No plan to use Army against Maoists: Antony

Thiruvananthapuram, November 02: Defence Minister A K Antony on Monday ruled out the use of Army against Maoists but said violence perpetrated by them would be dealt with firmly.

“The army is the last resort in internal security measures and the government does not intend to use it against Maoist activities,” he told reporters here.

He said law and order was mainly a state subject, but the Centre was prepared to extend any support, including providing paramilitary forces to deal with any internal security problem.

Woman gets life sentence for killing husband

Mumbai, November 02: A sessions court has sentenced a 21-year-old woman to life imprisonment for killing her husband out of her extra-marital affair.

Jyoti Malusare was accused of killing Vijay, her husband, by giving him sleeping pills.

As per the prosecution, Jyoti and Vijay got married on May 9, 2007 and were living in suburban Ghatkopar with Vijay’s parents.

A month after their wedding, on June 14, 2007, Jyoti gave Vijay a glass of milk at night. Next morning she raised alarm, saying that Vijay was not waking up. He was taken to hospital, but was declared dead.

UP Govt urges women participation in health awareness

Lucknow, November 02: The Uttar Pradesh government today urged the women to ensure their maximum participation in programmes related to health awareness and run them effectively.

Chief Secretary Atul Kumar Gupta in a statement said that the government resources were limited, so voluntary organisations should hold health camps and play an active role in the treatment of general public.

The Chief Secretary expressed these views yesterday at a function organised at the Poornanand Tiwari Seva Santhan here.

Three snatchers lynched in Bengal

Baruipur (WB), November 02: Three persons, allegedly trying to snatch a bag of money from a passenger, were beaten to death today by locals and co-passengers here in South 24 Parganas district, police said.

A group of five persons allegedly tried to snatch a bag of money from a businessman travelling on a trekker in Gopalnagar area, after which the locals and co-passengers beat to death two of them on the spot.

One of them died on his way to the hospital, while one has been admitted to a local hospital here, police said, adding that one of their accomplice managed to flee.

Pak claims Indian-made arms seized from Taliban

Islamabad, November 02: Pakistan today claimed its security forces had seized Indian-made arms and equipment from the Taliban stronghold of South Waziristan, where the Army has launched a major operation to flush out the militants.

Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira and chief military spokesman Maj Gen Athar Abbas alleged during a news briefing that Pakistani troops had recovered “Indian arms, ammunition, literature and medical equipment” from Sherwangi, a key militant base that was captured a few days ago.

CJI, 20 other Supreme Court judges declare assets

New Delhi, November 02: Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan and 20 other judges of the Supreme Court today made public their assets.

The assets of Justice B N Agrawal, who retired on October 15, were also declared on the website on his special request, the apex court website said.

“The above declaration of assets is purely on voluntary basis,” the website said.

However, the details of the assets of Justice H S Bedi were not not available

Youth kills parents in a fit of rage

Guwahati, November 02: Apparently upset over a quarrel with his parents, a youth today allegedly killed them in a fit of rage in Assam’s Nagaon district, police said.

Paban Nath, a resident of No 2 Kaki Moinapur village, beheaded his mother Padumi Devi and attacked his father Jadav Nath with an axe killing both of them on the spot.

He tried to escape after the deed but the locals captured and handed him over to the police, they added.

The youth later confessed to the police that he had killed his parents in a fit of rage following a quarrel.

Bajaj motorcycle sales grow 52 percent in October

Mumbai, November 02: Leading two-wheeler major Bajaj Auto Monday said its motorcycle sales grew 52 percent in October to 249,681 units, as against the 163,850 units it sold in the corresponding month last year.

‘Bajaj motorcycle sales grew 52 percent in October 2009 despite several supply constraints,’ said Bajaj Auto managing director Rajiv Bajaj in a statement.

‘We are confident of maintaining this growth rate for the rest of FY10,’ he added.

Japan minister trip to U.S. not set, ties strained

Iran wants new talks on nuclear fuel deal – envoy

Tehran, November 02: Iran has signalled that it wants fundamental changes to the draft deal, in which it would send most of its low-enriched uranium (LEU) abroad for further processing to turn it into more refined fuel for a Tehran research reactor.

The plan, backed by the other participants — Russia, France and the United States — aims to reduce Iran’s LEU stockpile below the minimum quantity that could be turned into the highly enriched uranium needed for a nuclear bomb.

12 policemen arrested in Brazil for killing five people

Sao Paulo, November 02: Twelve Military Police officers have been arrested in connection with the killings of five young men in Curitiba, the capital of Brazil’s Parana state, the official AEN state news agency said.

The Military Police arrested the officers, who allegedly committed the murders Sep 10 in Curitiba’s Alto da Gloria neighbourhood, AEN said.

Thirteen officers pursued a stolen vehicle and decided to execute the five young men when they surrendered, AEN reported, citing the Military Police Command.

11 suspected Maoists arrested in Bihar

Patna, November 02: Eleven suspected Maoist guerrillas, including one prime accused in the Jehanabad jailbreak, were arrested in Bihar’s Gaya district during combing operations early Monday, police said.

Police arrested the 11 rebels, including Sanjay Yadav who was allegedly involved in Jehanabad jailbreak in November 2005, from a village under Atri police station in Gaya, about 100 km from here.

‘We arrested these suspected Maoists who were gathered in the village. Their identities are being verified,’ a police officer said.

Raghuveera warns Jagan detractors

Hyderabad, November 02: Senior Congress leader and Andhra Pradesh Agriculture Minister N Raghuveera Reddy today warned the detractors of late Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy’s son and Kadapa MP Y S Jaganmohan Reddy that they should be ready to ”face repercusions”.
