Danish pair dominate Volvo India International Regatta

Chennai, November 02: Denmark’s Kirketarp Kristian and Sletten Mathias dominated the opening day when they led in all the three races of the 29er class in the Volvo India International Regatta at the Chennai Port, here today.

The Danes shrugged off a slow start and broke free from the bunch in the last race to finish ahead of the two Indian combinations of Aman Vyas and Sachin Singha and Hussain Bhavnagarwala and Nishanth Chandrasekar.

Tribals to protest denial of right to forests

New Delhi, November 02: Tribals from across India will hold protests on Tuesday and Wednesday alleging the government is imposing illegal and dangerous afforestation programmes and sending police to repress the forest dwellers, an NGO said Monday.

The protests will be held in Delhi, Gandhinagar, Udaipur, Bhopal, Raipur and Bhubaneshwar, said a member of Campaign for Survival and Dignity (CSD), a forum for some 200 NGOs working for the rights of tribals and forest dwellers.

Motive behind Goa blast still unclear, say police

Panaji, November 02: The motive behind the Diwali-eve blast in Goa is still not clear more than a fortnight after two associates of the rightwing Hindu outfit Sanatan Sanstha (SS) were killed in the explosion while ferrying a bomb, a senior police official said.

Speaking to reporters in Panaji Monday evening, Superintendent of Police (CID) Atmaram Deshpande said that the police were still trying to figure out why Malgonda Patil and Yogesh Naik, both SS associates, carried out the blast in a crowded area in Margao, a major town in South Goa, 35 km from here.

Suicide bomber, aide killed and 7 injured in Pakistan

Islamabad, November 02: At least seven people were injured as an explosion ripped through a police post on Monday on a main highway on the outskirts of Pakistan’s eastern city of Lahore, police said.

The check-post was located at an entry point to the city at a six-lane motorway between the federal capital Islamabad and Lahore.

Lahore police chief Pervez Rathore told reporters at the scene that seven people, including three policemen, were seriously injured in the bombing, which was carried out by a suicide bomber who blew himself up as police tried to conduct a search of him.

Lindsay Lohan brands her father a ‘lunatic’

London, November 02: American actress-singer Lindsay Lohan has lashed out at her father Michael Lohan, branding him as a “lunatic”.

“My father is a lunatic and doesn’t even deserve such a title since he has never been around in my life other than when he had threatened me and my family. He should be where he has always put himself after verbally abusing and physically abusing people all my life,” Lindsay wrote on her twitter page.

Lindsay also said she wants to change her surname because she doesn’t want to be associated with Michael.

Yeddyurappa to remain chief minister, rules Rajnath Singh

New Delhi, November 02: Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa will remain in the post, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Rajnath Singh Monday stated, putting an end to the intense leadership tussle plaguing the party’s first government in the south for the past few weeks.

Emerging from the BJP’s Core Committee’s meeting to decide on the leadership issue Monday evening, Singh said that Yeddyurappa would continue.

“Yes, he will,” Singh told reporters in reply to a question whether Yeddyurappa will remain the chief minister.

Taiwan rules out foul play in presidential plane incident

Taipei, November 02: Taiwan’s air force Monday ruled out an act of sabotage or human error for an incident in which a presidential plane carrying President Ma Ying-jeou had braking trouble after landing.

Trailing smoke and a small fire were seen when a Fokker 50 VIP transport plane with Ma on board landed at Chingchuankang airport in Taichung, central Taiwan, Sunday, an air force spokesman said.

Tata Motors sales up 34 percent in October

Kolkata, November 02: Auto major Tata Motors registered sales of 53,404 units last month, a growth of 34 percent over the 39,729 vehicles sold in October 2008, a company statement said here Monday.

Sales of the company’s commercial and passenger vehicles include exports.

“The company’s domestic sales of Tata commercial and passenger vehicles for October 2009 were 50,552, a 40 percent growth over 36,168 sold in October last year,” the statement said.

Weapon supply racket busted, 14 guns recovered

New Delhi, November 02: A 26-year-old resident of Bihar has been arrested for illegally selling guns and ammunition in the national capital, police said Monday.

Sleuths of Delhi Police’s Crime Branch arrested Manish Kumar from Rohini Sector-24 last month and recovered 12 pistols from him. Two revolvers and 86 rounds of ammunition were recovered later during the raids at his hideouts.

The police said the weapons were manufactured indiegenously in and around Munger district in Bihar.

Brave Kashmir girl Rukhsana made special police officer

Jammu, November 02: Rukhsana, the brave Jammu and Kashmir girl who took on Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists in September, has been appointed a Special Police Officer, a temporary job which would fetch her Rs.3,000 a month.

The police have issued the orders while Rukhsana is in Delhi. Her brother, Aijaz, too has been appointed SPO, a police officer said Monday.

A police official said the appointment orders have been issued to enable the sister and brother to keep weapons and also earn some money to sustain themselves.

Haryana makes bureaucratic reshuffle

Chandigarh, November 02: In a bureaucratic reshuffle, the Haryana government has posted Chhatar Singh as the principal secretary to Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

Singh, an IAS officer of 1980 batch, replaces M.L. Tayal, who was principal secretary to Hooda in the previous government.

K.K. Khandelwal, director for public relations, has been posted as additional principal secretary to the chief minister.

Naresh Gulati, a 1975-batch IAS officer, has been posted as financial commissioner and principal secretary for revenue.

‘Indians more concerned about climate change’

London, November 02: People in India and other developing countries, blamed for doing little to combat global warming, seem to be more concerned about the problem than their counterparts in developed countries, according to a latest survey.

The annual Climate Confidence Monitor found that while about 42 per cent of people in India and Brazil are worried over global warming, about 50 per cent of the people in developing nations in general are concerned about the problem.

Advocates not happy with Saturdays as working day

Kochi, November 02: Miffed at the Kerala High Court’s decision making Saturdays a working day, an association of advocates today said it was not consulted on the issue.

The high court had last week decided to hold regular sittings on all Saturdays, except second Saturdays, to hear cases pending for long, provided the advocates appearing for both the parties were willing to cooperate.

The association had convened a general body meeting tomorrow to discuss the issue, a press release said.

BSF arrest Pakistani intruder from Kutch border

Ahmedabad, November 02: The Border Security Force has apprehended a Pakistani national trying to sneak into India across Kutch border, BSF officials said here today.

The intruder had tried to intrude from Vighakhot border of Kutch yesterday but he was apprehended by BSF personnel and taken to joint interrogation centre (JIC) in Bhuj, the officials said.

BSF had last week seized a Pakistani boat which had intruded into Indian waters near Sir Creek area of Kutch last Friday but its occupants managed to escape.

One killed in Jaipur, smoke suspected to be the cause

Jaipur, November 02: A resident of Vatika town nearly seven kms from the IOC fuel depot today died in SMS hospital here after he allegedly complained of suffocation.

Family members of the deceased Yashoda Nandan (around 38 years) claimed that he developed respiratory disorders due to smoke, which had spread over a number of villages near Sitapura area after the devastating fire on Thursday last, and died in the hospital.

However, the hospital administration has so far not confirmed whether suffocation was the exact cause.

SC Judges declaring assets excellent gesture: Moily

New Delhi, November 02: Law Minister M Veerappa Moily today termed as “an excellent gesture” the decision of Supreme Court judges to declare their assets in public and said this proved the integrity of Indian judiciary was the “highest”.

“It is not their (judiciary) intention to hide anything. But there are some issues. Even then, making it (assets) available to public is an excellent gesture on the part of the judiciary,” Moily told PTI.

He said the move proved the integrity of the judiciary was the “highest” and they would like to keep it up.

Five SIMI activist remanded for two more days

Indore, November 02: A local court here today extended the police remand of five SIMI activists, including the two wanted in connection with Ahmedabad bomb blasts by two more days following a plea of the police department.

Allowing the police application, Judicial Magistrate First Class D K Singh granted custody of Mohammed Shafiq, Mohammed Yunus, Sheikh Sajid, Arshad Khan and Firoz Khan for two more days.

Man intervenes in scuffle; killed

New Delhi, November 02: A 32-year-old man had to pay with his life when he intervened in a scuffle between two groups of youngsters following which one of them allegedly stabbed him in south-east Delhi, police said today.

The incident was reported from Taimur Nagar in New Friends Colony police station area late last night and the victim has been identified as Govardhan, who works in a dairy in the area.

Govardhan intervened in a fight between four men, who were under the influence of alcohol, outside a dairy owned by one Zile Singh where he was working for the past 15 years.

Yeddyurappa to stay as CM, says Rajnath

New Delhi, November 02: Effectively rejecting the demands of dissidents, BJP today made it clear that B S Yeddyurappa will continue as Karnataka Chief Minister but said it would hold talks with MLAs and MPs of the state to “smoothly” resolve the “crisis” in the party unit.

“Definitely, definitely,” BJP President Rajnath Singh told reporters here when asked whether Yeddyurappa will continue as the Chief Minister.

Woman, grandchild die in building collapse

New Delhi, November 02: A woman and her grandson were killed when an under-construction building collapsed in west Delhi while they were on way to a market, police said today.

The three-storeyed building collapsed in Guru Nanak Dev Nagar locality in west Delhi last evening in which three persons were also injured and police have arrested the contractor Harpreet Singh.

Girl attempts suicide in Jammu and Kashmir over sim card

Srinagar, November 02: A girl in a north Kashmir village on Sunday allegedly attempted suicide after learning that her pre-paid sim card was not functioning, residents of the village claimed.

According to villagers, Taslima, 23, living in Chattergul village in Ganderbal district, consumed some poisonous substance and had be taken to the hospital in critical condition after she learnt that her pre-paid mobile phone would not function any longer.
