TDP holding talks with Left, MBT

Hyderabad, November 04: The Telugu Desam is holding talks with the Left parties and MBT over seat-sharing in the GHMC elections.

Though the TDP is not sure of getting an absolute majority in the corporation, it wants to check the march of the Congress to some extent.

With this objective, it wants to forge an alliance with CPM, CPI and MBT.

TDP is also aware that the strength of the Left parties is very limited in Hyderabad.

‘Minorities should feel safe’

Hyderabad, november 04: Former Union Minister, Renuka Chowdary felt that creating an atmosphere where minorities feel absolutely safe was important for the survival of the country and multiculturalism was a reality of India.

State ready to tackle Maoists: DGP

Hyderabad, November 04: Andhra Pradesh Director-General of Police R.R. Girish Kumar has warned Maoists not to underestimate the capabilities of the Police Department and assured people that they were geared up to meet any challenge posed by the naxalites.

The Maoists were resorting to violence in areas bordering Orissa and Chhattisgarh. They had attacked police and civilians in the past, Mr. Girish Kumar said in his address at the passing out parade of the 10th batch of Civil Stipendiary Cadet Trainee Police Constables in Amberpet here on Tuesday.

Differentiate news from views, Rosaiah tells media

Hyderabad, November 04: Chief Minister K. Rosaiah has asked the media to draw a clear cut line between news, analysis and views as it is increasingly getting difficult for readers to differentiate them.

Inaugurating the first State conference of Andhra Pradesh Working Journalists’ Federation (APWJF) here on Tuesday he said media must be active but not hyperactive as it could create problems.

Stating that it was one of the most responsible professions he cautioned against dissemination of unconfirmed news as it would have adverse effect.

N Ireland dissident threat ‘worst for six years’

Belfast, November 04: The threat posed by paramilitary groups in Northern Ireland is the highest it has been in six years, a paramilitary watchdog said on Wednesday.

Dissident organisations now pose a “very serious” threat to peace in the long-troubled province, said the Independent Monitoring Commission (IMC), which reports every six months to the London and Dublin governments.

Kenyan attorney mulls legal action against US

Nairobi, November 04: Kenya’s attorney general says he is seeking legal advice as to whether he can sue the United States government for revoking his travel visa.

Attorney General Amos Wako spoke at a news conference Wednesday and for the first time acknowledged receiving a travel ban.

American officials said Wako had blocked reform and had contributed to a culture of impunity for not acting against perpetrators of postelection violence in Kenya in 2007.

India to open campaign against Iraq in Asian under-19

New Delhi, November 04: India Under-19 will open their campaign against Iraq in the Group C of the qualifying rounds of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-19 Championship Thursday at Arbil, Iraq.

According to information received here, Indians arrived at Arbil Tuesday evening from Dubai and had a full training session at the Francouse Al – Harerri Stadium.

Indian coach Colm Toal said that the team had a good session and stressed on set pieces and different combinations at mid-field and defence.

Two reduced to ashes as oil tanker explodes in mishap

Jalna, November 04: A driver and his associate reduced to ashes today when a fuel tanker exploded into flames after hitting a tree at Dambri village, 35 km from the town.

According to the police, the oil tanker containing petrol and diesel was coming from Manmad and proceeding to Basmat, Parbhani district. When the tanker reached at Dambri village, the driver lost control and hit the tree.

The oil burst into flames that engulfed driver Rameshwar Gite, 28, and 22-year-old cleaner Dadasaheb Wagh, both residents of Jintur.

Delhi’s budget tourist hubs to get facelift ahead of Games

New Delhi, November 04: Paharganj and Karol Bagh, two congested areas of the national capital that house innumerable budget hotels and crummy guest houses, are soon to get a facelift before next year’s Commonwealth Games, Tourism Minister Kumari Selja said here Wednesday.

Selja, while making the announcement, said the transport ministry had already allocated Rs.44 crore (Rs.440 million) for Paharganj and Rs.33 crore for Karol Bagh to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), which takes care of the two areas.

No spurt in infiltration: PC

Jammu, November 04: Union Home Minister P Chidambaram today said there has been no spurt in infiltration from across the border into Jammu and Kashmir.

“There has been no spurt in infiltration though there have been good attempts at it,” he said in reply to a question by reporters here.

Security forces are in full control along the borders, the Home Minister said.

On Jammu division, he said the security situation is satisfactory there, adding the number of militants being killed is very high while the losses suffered by civilians and security forces is very low.

Hyderabad, November 04: Institute of Hotel Management is conducting a Hospitality Training Programme for class VIII passouts in the age group of 18 to 25 years. The programme is conducted under Government of India, Ministry of Tourism scheme of Capacity Building for service providers.

It is aimed at providing employable skills in the areas of food production and food and beverage services along with creating jobs for the rural and unemployed youth.

One arrested, tortoises recovered from him

Krishnagar (WB), November 04: One person was today arrested and at least 40 tortoises were recovered from him in Nadia district.

“Acting on a tip-off, Sailen Haldar of Bongaon-Bhabanipur in North 24-Parganas district was held by RPF personnel at Majhergram station when he was found carrying tortoises of rare species in a bag in the vendor compartment of Ranaghat-Bongaon local train early this morning,” RPF officer in Ranaghat, Pijush Kanti Saha said.

Cambodia appoints former Thai PM as advisor

hnom Penh, November 04: Former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra was appointed as economic advisor to the Cambodian government, officials said Wednesday.

He will also be a private advisor to Prime Minister Hun Sen, Xinhua reported.

King Norodom Sihamoni has formally appointed Thaksin to the posts on Oct 27 at the request of prime minister and in accordance with the country’s constitution, a government spokesman said Wednesday.

Thaksin has been living in self-exile in foreign countries since he was toppled from power in 2006.

Suspected Maoist arrested in West Bengal

Kolkata, November 04: A suspected Maoist guerilla was arrested from West Bengal’s West Midnapore district Wednesday, police said.

“Sunil Kisku was arrested from Belpahari region, a Maoist stronghold in the district. He was an active Maoist ultra and used to operate in the region,” Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Surajit Kar Purakayastha told IANS.

He said that Kisku has been charged with launching attacks on various joint forces’ camps in the region. He is also allegedly involved in some murder cases.

Tight security for players

Hyderabad, November 04: Amidst tight security, the Indian and Australian teams arrived here for the fifth One-Day cricket match, to be played on Thursday at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

The teams arrived on a chartered flight from Mohali on Tuesday evening. The teams reached Taj Krishna with a police motorcade following the buses. Media members were not allowed inside the gate of the hotel, citing security reasons. The hotel turned into a fortress with policemen guarding it at every point.

Hoax bomb call at HAL airport

Bangalore, November 04: A bomb call received at the old HAL airport turned out to be a “hoax” today, police said.

The call, received at the HAL airport police station late in the afternoon, was traced to a public phone booth near HAL staff quarters. After a thorough search of the area, it was proved a hoax, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-East Division) B N S Reddy said.

India to have 51 million diabetics by next year: Expert

Ahmedabad, November 04: India, which is home to highest number of diabetics in the world, will have around 51 million patients of the disease by 2010 and that figure may go up to 80 million by 2030, a leading diabetes expert said today.

Chennai-based V Mohan said this during media briefing about the four-day conference of RSSDI (Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India) beginning here from tomorrow.

The annual conference will have more than 3,000 delegates, including 250 from abroad, 109 faculty members and 13 foreign scientists, he said.

CBI receives more than half complaints through SMS

Mumbai, November 04: The CBI, while inaugurating the Vigilance Week today, said over half of its traps are registered through SMS.

“The SMS campaign started last year is a huge success and out of the 26 traps registered until now, the complaints of over half have been received through SMS,” CBI Joint Director Rishiraj Singh told reporters here.

“This includes the case registered against Sarobjot Singh, son of Buta Singh,” Singh said.

A person calling or sending the message need not reveal his identity if he does not wish to, he said.

BJP to raise Orissa mining scam in Parliament

Bhubaneswar, November 04: A five-member MP delegation of BJP today arrived here to make an on-the spot inquiry into the alleged multi-crore mining scam in Orissa and announced that it would be raised by the party in the winter session of Parliament.

The delegation led by Balbir Punj left for Keonjhar district to verify alleged theft and smuggling of iron ore and manganese from Joda and Barbil area.

Yeddy confident crisis will be resolved

New Delhi, November 04:Karnataka chief minister B S Yeddyurappa, facing dissidence in the state, today expressed confidence that the issue will be resolved saying the BJP central leadership has already said there would be no change of guard in the state.

“I am 100 per cent confident that the issue will be resolved,” he told reporters here ahead of his meeting with the party’s central leaders.

Don’t worry about FBI report: PC

Jammu, November 04:The government tonight said the FBI report that Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) militant group planned to target India should not cause worry as the situation was “fully under control”.

“Do not worry about the (FBI) report. We are fully aware of the contents of the report and the situation is under control”, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram told a press conference here.

Federal American prosecutors have told a court in Chicago that LeT planned to attack National Defence College in New Delhi.
