US Army shooter shouted Allah-u-Akbar; 13 people killed

Washington, November 06: A top US Army official confirmed Friday that the suspect in the killing of at least 13 people at a Texas army base likely shouted “Allah-u-Akbar” (God is great) before opening fire.

Army Lieutenant General Robert Cone, commander of the Fort Hood, Texas, base where the shootings took place Thursday, made the comment in answer to a question from NBC news.

Cone said “there are first hand accounts” to the effect that the suspect, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, had yelled the Muslim religious chant.

All terrorist camps are intact, India tells Pakistan

Hyderabad, November 06: India Friday once again berated Pakistan for not making “serious and convincing efforts” to eliminate terrorism, saying “all terrorist camps” were intact in that country, including some located close to army bases, and pointed to a Pakistani link to a reported Lashkar terror plot foiled by the FBI.

Unhappy with Pakistan’s lack of concrete action over the Mumbai attacks, New Delhi said although it has vital interests in the peace and stability of that country, it will not be possible to resume dialogue till Islamabad makes “convincing efforts.”

Koda has mining interests in Goa, claims BJP

Panaji, November 06: Former Jharkhand chief minister Madhu Koda, allegedly at the centre of a Rs.2,500 crore money laundering scam, could have mining interests to the tune of Rs.400 crore in Goa, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said Friday.

Speaking at a press conference here, BJP leader Manohar Parrikar, who is leader of opposition in the state assembly, noted that Koda would visit Goa at least once every month, allegedly to pursue his mining interests.

S Tel achieves financial closure

Chennai, November 06: S Tel, one of the new entrants in the Indian mobile telephony space, Friday said it has achieved financial closure for its Rs.2,000-crore project and that it would start rolling out services this year.

In a statement, S Tel said an eight-bank consortium led by IDBI has agreed to lend Rs.953 crore for nine years.

The two promoters of the company — India’s Siva group and Bahrain Telecommunications Co — have brought in Rs.1,253 crore as equity.

Vietnam storm toll rises to 109

Hanoi, November 06: The toll from Tropical Storm Mirinae in central Vietnam has risen to 109, the country’s Steering Committee for Storm and Flood Control reported Friday.

The authority said 16 people remained missing, and local media were reporting death figures as high as 119.

Flood waters were beginning to recede across much of Phu Yen and Binh Dinh provinces, but remained as high as one metre in some towns.

Iran police arrest four journalists at protests

Tehran, November 06: Iranian security forces arrested four journalists, including one Japanese and two Canadian nationals, during the protests in Tehran this week, the semi-official Fars news agency reported Friday.
Thousands of opposition supporters, at the time the annual state-organised anti-US rallies were underway Wednesday, poured into Tehran’s streets to protest against the government of President Mahamoud Ahmadinejad despite severe warnings from security officials.

India developing own influenza vaccine for first time: Azad

New Delhi, November 06: An influenza vaccine is for the first time being developed in India that would be effective against the swine flu pandemic, Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said here on Friday.

“Public health challenges will continue to put pressure on our system and we have to be better prepared to respond to these challenges through effective regulation, surveillance, capacity building, supervision and care,” he said.

Azad was addressing the newly formed consultative committee attached to his ministry and comprising both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha parliamentarians.

Former Maoist, jailed rebel’s wife join JMM

Ranchi, November 06: A former Maoist leader and the wife of an arrested rebel on Friday joined the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and will be fielded by the party in the five-phase assembly poll beginning Nov 25.

Shobha Pal, wife of jailed Maoist leader Jeeval Pal who faces serious charges of murder and attacking a police squad, and former Maoist Satish Sah, who is at present on bail, joined the JMM in presence of party chief Shibu Soren in Jharkhand’s Palamau district.

Soren assured both that they would get the party ticket to contest the coming poll.

TV exposure may be linked to aggressive behaviour in kids

Washington, November 06:Three-year-old children who are exposed to more TV appear to be at an increased risk for exhibiting aggressive behaviour, according to new research.

“Early childhood aggression can be problematic for parents, teachers and childhood peers and sometimes is predictive of more serious behaviour problems to come, such as juvenile delinquency, adulthood violence and criminal behaviour,” says a new study.

Eight held with spurious drugs worth Rs.1 crore

Lucknow, November 06: Eight people were arrested with fake medicines worth nearly Rs.1 crore (Rs.10 million) in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur district, police said Friday.

“Acting on a tip off, we raided a hideout today (Friday) in the Haqiqatnagar locality, where the gang members had set up a manufacturing unit for spurious drugs,” police inspector R.P. Dubey told reporters in Saharanpur.

Saharanpur is 350 km from here.

“Those arrested have admitted that they used to supply fake medicines to dealers in Punjab, Uttarakhand, Haryana and other neighbouring states,” he added.

New Delhi, November 06: A reference guidebook that will have clear guidelines on child care for caretakers in children’s homes and how to instill in kids a positive mental outlook will be out by January, said experts at a workshop on mental health in the capital Friday.

Vikram Dutt, director of the two-day workshop that began Friday said: “It’s very important to have standard guidelines in all children’s homes for proper care of children who have faced many difficulties in life – be it sexual abuse, abandonment or getting orphaned.”

Sensex ends 0.68 percent up after volatile trade

Mumbai, November 06: A benchmark Indian equity index shut shop Friday 0.68 percent up after a highly volatile trading day.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened higher at 16,137.42 points, closed at 16,172.97 points (provisional), 0.68 percent or 109.07 points above Thursday’s close at 16,063.9 points.

Around the same time, the S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE), too, closed in the positive terrain at 4,802.75 points, up 0.78 percent or 37.2 points over its last close.

19 killed in China as truck runs into crowd

Beijing, November 06: At least 19 people were killed when a truck ran into a crowd in northern China’s Hebei province, police said Friday.

The accident happened at around 8.30 p.m. Thursday in Zhaozhuangzi village when the truck hit another vehicle and then went into the crowd, Xinhua reported.

As many as 32 people were hospitalised.

The driver and the owner of the truck were arrested.

No sign of guard who made off with 11 million euros in France

Paris, November 06: Police in the French city of Lyon were searching Friday for the driver of an armoured van who apparently made off with 11 million euros ($16.4 million) belonging to the Bank of France, French media reported.

The 39-year-old driver apparently simply drove off Thursday while the van’s two other guards left him alone when they stopped at a branch office of the security company they worked for.

The van, stripped of the 38 bags of bills it was carrying, was found several hours later in a Lyon suburb.

Pakistani security forces storm Taliban chief’s stronghold

Islamabad, November 06: Pakistani security forces have fought their way into Makeen, which is the stronghold of the country’s Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud, during the ongoing operations against terrorists in South Waziristan.

The security forces have successfully entered Makeen area, Geo News reported Friday.

Five hideouts were destroyed and two militants were killed in a fierce battle.

Fighter jets, gunship helicopters and heavy artillery pounded the positions of the militants.

29 killed in Himachal as bus falls into gorge

Kangra (Himachal Pradesh), November 06: At least 29 people were killed when an overcrowded bus skidded off the road and fell into a 100-foot-deep gorge in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district Friday, officials said.

“The private bus was on its way from Nagrota Suriyan to Dehra when it fell into the gorge near Haripur in Kangra district this (Friday) morning,” Kangra sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Rakesh Sharma told IANS.

He said at least 29 people died and 27 were injured in the accident.

“Most of the dead belonged to Dehra and nearby areas,” Sharma said.

Melbourne, November 06: Indians were among the over 2,000 foreign students who were left in the lurch – some with barely two weeks to go before they get their degrees – following the overnight collapse of four private colleges in the Australian cities of Sydney and Melbourne.

Teachers at the colleges run by the Meridian Group were told they were out of jobs Thursday night, but no one told the students who arrived at campuses Friday morning to find the doors closed, ABC Online reported.

India, EU ink nuclear pact, to clinch trade treaty by 2010

New Delhi, November 06: India and the 27-nation European Union Friday signed a pact on an ambitious nuclear energy project and decided to conclude their long-delayed free trade treaty by next year.

The two sides also agreed to expand their cooperation in countering terrorism by accelerating negotiations between Europol, the EU’s nodal criminal intelligence agency, and the Indian agencies.

New price index shortly, says commerce ministry

New Delhi, November 06: The wholesale price index (WPI) for October will be according to the old base year of 1993-94 and the WPI new series with base year 2004-05 will be released shortly, according to a senior commerce ministry official.

“We will have WPI with 2004-05 as the base year soon. We have already released the monthly data for commodities,” said Industrial Policy and Promotion Secretary Ajay Shankar.

South Korea ratifies free trade pact with India

Seoul, November 06: South Korea’s parliament on Friday ratified a comprehensive economic partnership deal with India, paving the way for closer trade ties.

Seoul’s ratification opens the way for eliminating or lowering import duties on goods and services.

The pact could almost double trade volume between the India and South Korea, Asia’s third- and fourth-largest economies, reports said.

Bilateral trade is estimated around $15.6 billion anually.
