AP Govt determined to promote industrialisation: Rosaiah

Hyderabad, November 08: Andhra Pradesh government would adopt a multi-pronged strategy to promote industrialisation in the state in a big way, Chief Minister K Rosaiah said on Sunday.

The government was providing various subsidies and incentives to help industries become competitive and still the power tariff is being maintained at the lowest level in comparison with several other states, a release from the Chief Minister’s Office quoted him as saying.

Dhoni defends decision, blames inconsistent batting for defeat

Guwahati, November 08: India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Sunday defended his debatable decision to bat first in the sixth ODI against Australia and blamed the team’s inconsistent batting for their series defeat.

India badly needed to win today’s match to stay afloat in the seven-match series but Dhoni’s gamble to bat first on a tricky track boomeranged and India slumped to 27 for five in nine overs and could never recover from there.

Security forces to vacate Lalgarh schools: Buddhadeb

Kolkata, November 08: West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Sunday said that security force troopers, who have been deployed in and around Lalgarh to flush out Maoists, will vacate all school buildings they are now occupying in the region by Nov 15.

“We are trying to ensure all joint forces’ personnel vacate the school buildings in Lalgarh by Nov 15. We are hopeful of completing the whole process shortly,” Bhattacharjee told a press conference at West Midnapore circuit house.

He said: “We must abjure violence. The rebels should surrender their firearms.”

Maoists kill four EFR jawans in W Midnapore district

Gidhni (WB), November 08: Four EFR jawans were killed in a surprise assault by Maoists while they were patrolling near Gidhni Bazaar in the Jhargram sub-division of West Midnapore district today, barely hours after West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee left after a two-day visit to the violence-scarred district.

IG (Western Range) Kuldip Singh said the EFR jawans were patrolling near a police camp close to a school in the area under Jamboni police station.

Cong confident of winning GHMC polls

Hyderabad, November 08: Downplaying the strong resentment in the ruling Congress over ticket distribution for the civic polls in Hyderabad, D Nagender, who quit as city Congress president, today expressed confidence that the party would emerge victorious in the elections.

“Though I have quit my post as city Congress president, I am not the one to leave the battlefield mid-course. We will strive for party’s victory and it will be a homage to late Y S Rajasekhara Reddy and a gift to Chief Minister K Rosaiah,” Nagender, who is the state Health Minister, told reporters.

India may ‘wind down’ fiscal stimulus next year, says PM

New Delhi, November 08: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Sunday said the measures taken by his government helped India brave the financial crisis better than most countries, but it may “wind down” by next year the fiscal stimulus that was launched last December.

“I am happy to say that India has been able to face the global economic downturn better than most other countries in the world,” the prime Minister told the India Economic Summit of the World Economic Forum (WEF).

Son shoots, sets ablaze father over land in Greater Noida

Greater Noida, November 08: Angered over his father’s refusal to hand over his entire property to him, a man shot him twice and when that did not prove fatal, poured kerosene over him and burnt him alive in a village here Saturday, police said Sunday.

According to police, Mangat Kumar, 80, of Kiswana village under Dankore area of Greater Noida, had transferred his agricultural land in the village to his three sons equally some time back.

However, his eldest son, Ramesh, 35, opposed the decision and wanted the entire land to be made over to him.

UAE issues measures to counter money laundering

Abu Dhabi, November 08: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has introduced measures to deal with money laundering in the insurance sector, WAM news agency reported Sunday.

Fatima Mohammed Ishaq Al Awadhi, deputy director general of the National Insurance Authority, said the issuance of the measures is expected to curb any future money laundering activity in the sector.

She added that the measures would be applicable on all insurance companies, including foreign insurance companies operating in the UAE.

China can get hostile any time, says RSS chief

Shimla, November 08: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat Sunday said the peace gestures from China were a camouflage to gain time and it could “turn hostile” any time.

“China can turn hostile at any convenient time… we should not be complacent and always remain in the state of preparedness to meet any eventuality,” he said, addressing a congregation here.

Maoists kill several policemen in West Bengal

Kolkata, November 08: Several policemen were killed in an ambush by Maoist rebels at Gidhni in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district Sunday, police said. The actual toll in the incident is not yet confirmed.

“There was an attack on a police team by the Maoists. There are reports that several of our men are dead. But we cannot confirm the exact toll now,” West Midnapore district magistrate Narayan Swarup Nigam told IANS over phone.

200 suspects arrested in Pakistan operation

Islamabad, November 08: Law enforcement agencies in Pakistan arrested nearly 200 people Sunday in a search operation carried out in the capital and near the city of Rawalpindi, Online news agency reported.

It was not immediately clear if the arrests are related to the Nov 2 bomb blast in Rawalpindi that killed 34 people.

Maoists getting weapons from China: Home Secretary

New Delhi, November 08: Government today indicated that China may be a source of arms for Maoists with whom it is willing to have a dialogue but they should abjure violence.

“Chinese are big smugglers… suppliers of small arms. I am sure that the Maoists also get them,” Pillai said when asked if the Naxals were having links with China.

This is for the first time that someone high in the government has said that the Maoists are getting arms from China.

Advani turns 83; Prez, PM wish him

New Delhi, November 08: Senior BJP leader L K Advani today celebrated his 83rd birthday in the shadow of reports that he may quit as Leader of the Opposition by end of January next.

President Pratibha Patil sent flowers to him while Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar wished him over phone.

There are indications, including from the RSS, that Advani may quit as Leader of the Opposition once BJP gets a new president as the term of the incumbent Rajnath Singh expires next month.

CM should get back to flood relief work: JDS

Bangalore, November 08: With the internal crisis in BJP’s state unit having blown over, JDS chief H D Kumaraswamy today asked Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa to immediately get back to flood relief and rehabilitation work, saying the operation was badly affected due to the wrangling.

“From day one I have been telling them this is not the time to create unnecessary problems. I had requested both groups to sort out their problems and try to concentrate on flood relief work,” he told PTI.

Sambalpur, November 08:Mohammedan Sporting of Kolkata won the 4th All India Sambalpur Cup Football Championship defeating Tata Football Academy of Jamshedpur 2-1 at the VSS stadium here today.

In a keenly fought final which was goalless till half time, both the teams sweated it out to score till the 67th minute when Jagtar Singh of TFA managed to penetrate Mohammedan Sporting’s defence and netted the ball.

CLC convenes Air India-pilots union meeting tomorrow

Mumbai, November 08: In the face of proposed strike by Air India pilots, Chief Labour commissioner has called a conciliatory meeting between Nacil management and pilots’ union representatives in New Delhi tomorrow.

Indian commercial pilots’ association (ICPA), which claims representation of 800 pilots, threatened to go on strike on November 24 to press for their demands including payment of three months’ salary allowances.

“The CLC has called a conciliatory meeting on the issue of strike call given by the non-executive pilots on November 24,” Nacil sources told PTI here today.

Man arrested for cheating people in property deals

New Delhi, November 08: A man was today arrested by Delhi police in connection with cheating people through property deals.

Jodge Chawla, 48, a resident of Rajinder Nagar in Central Delhi, was booked under various provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crimes Act and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, police said.

He used to project himself as owner of certain properties and sell them by preparing forged documents, they said.

Husband sets wife on fire

Varanasi, November 08: A 25-year-old woman sustained serious burn injuries after her husband allegedly set her on fire at a village in Chandauli district.

The woman was admitted to Shiv Prasad Gupt divisional hospital here yesterday.

Police said that Soni, a native of Imliya area of Chandauli district, was married to Rakesh in 1998.

They have three children.

Rakesh was unemployed and addicted to liquor. Yesterday he had a tiff with his wife when she refused to give him money for liquor.

In a fit of anger Rakesh set her on fire after pouring kerosene on her.

TRS stands by slogan of ‘throwing out’ settlers: Rao

Hyderabad, November 08: Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) today said it stands by its slogan against settlers from other regions in Andhra Pradesh who engage in “illegal” activities in Telangana.

“We will stand by our slogan – ‘Telangana wale jago, Andhra wale bhago’ (Arise people of Telengana, Andhraites run away),” TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao told reporters.

“The state government should take action against those who encroached lands in Telangana region. We will continue our fight against land grabbers and other such elements,” Rao said.

FIR registered against 28 persons

Azamgarh, November 08: An FIR was registered against 28 persons including 26 women for allegedly taking pension meant for widows, police said.

The FIR was lodged against village head, village panchayat officers and 26 women of village Rasulpur in Bilariyaganj block, they said adding that the matter came to light during district wise verification drive launched on directives of District Magistrate.

It is alleged that these women took widow pension by forging their documents with the help of village head and panchayat officer.

Police is investigating the matter.

Seven passengers of Dadar-Guwahati Express robbed

Jabalpur, November 08: Seven passengers have been robbed of their cash and valuables after being drugged on board the Dadar-Guwahati Express near Itarsi station of West Central Railways, Government Railway Police (GRP) said today.

The passengers from Kishanganj in Bihar, who fell unconscious after they took some food-stuff laced with drugs from strangers last night, were rushed to the district hospital when Dadar-Guwahati Express (No 5645) reached here, the GRP said.

SIT summons ex-Gujarat minister

Ahmedabad, November 08: The Supreme Court appointed Special Investigation team (SIT), probing the role of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and others in th 2002 communal riots, has summoned former minister and BJP leader I K Jadeja to depose before it tomorrow.

Jadeja, now spokesperson of the state BJP, was Cabinet Minister at the time of riots in 2002, which had claimed over 1,000 lives.

“The SIT has summoned me to depose before the officials tomorrow,” Jadeja told PTI here today. “I will go for my deposition accordingly,” he added.

Kashmir, Ladakh recieve snowfall

Srinagar, November 08: Icy winds swept Kashmir as the high altitude areas including the famous ski resort of Gulmarg experienced snowfall today.

Reports of snowfall were received from higher reaches, mostly in North-west of Kashmir and parts of frontier Ladakh region.

Gulmarg, 55 kms from here in North Kashmir, witnessed a mild snowfall but its peripherial areas including Aferwath and Sunshine peak received two to three inches of snow during the day.
