Two killed by strong Indonesian quake

Jakarta, October 09: Jakarta A strong undersea earthquake killed two people and damaged buildings on the remote island of Sumbawa in central Indonesia, officials said on Monday.

At least 20 people were hospitalised on the island after the 6.7-magnitude temblor, many of them with broken bones, said Rustam Pakaya, the head of the Health Ministry’s crisis centre. He said at least 40 people were injured.

Maharashtra Govt. provides Rs 600 crore for power sector

Mumbai, Nov 09: In one of the first decisions taken after assuming power in the State, the Maharashtra government on Sunday said it has made a provision of Rs 600 crore to improve power supply in the State.

“The Government has sanctioned Rs 600 crore out of Rs 8,750 crore required for making the State load-shedding free till 2012,” an official from CMO said after the Cabinet meeting.

The Government is planning to set up 565 sub-centres, install 72,370 distribution transformers and put up 57,540 km long power distribution line, the official said.

R R Patil back as Maharashtra Home Minister

Mumbai, Nov 09: A year after 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, R R Patil is back in the saddle as Maharashtra Home Minister.

The senior NCP leader, who resigned in the aftermath of the attacks, has got back his old portfolio.

NCP chief Sharad Pawar’s nephew Ajit Pawar would handle Power portfolio, in addition to the Water Resources Ministry he handled earlier.

NCP leader Jayant Patil, who was Home Minister in the outgoing government, would now handle Rural Development Ministry, party sources said.

Four jawans killed, Maoists claim responsibility

New Delhi, Nov 09: Four Eastern Frontier Rifle (EFR) jawans were killed in a surprise assault by Maoists here in West Midnapore on Sunday, hours after Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee wrapped up a two-day visit to the violence-hit district even as a top Maoist leader claimed responsibility for the attack.

Claiming responsibility for the killings, top Maoist leader Koteshar Rao alias Kishanji on Sunday night dared the Central and State governments to deploy as much forces as they wanted in the embattled area.

Man dies 2 days after lodging FIR, kin blame police

Chandigarh, Nov 09: Following the death of New Indira Colony resident on Sunday morning, the relatives of the deceased have come forward stating that the 60-year-old had died of “shock”.

Gajaraj was reportedly upset as the police failed to take action on his complaint that several youths were harassing his daughter. The deceased had lodged the complaint on Friday but the four accused were freed instantly after the arrest. This apparently became the cause of Gajaran’s distress.

3-yr-old girl dies in accident

100 orphaned kids to watch Lanka-India test for free in Kanpur

Kanpur, Nov 09: The Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) has decided to invite 100 orphaned children to watch the India-Sri Lanka Test cricket match here on November 24 free of cost — in line with a suggestion by cricketer Sachin Tendulkar.

“Tendulkar had pointed out that stadiums are not fully occupied during test matches, so school children can come here and watch the matches free of cost. In this way, they will become interested in the game,” UPCA Director Jyoti Vajpayee said on Sunday.

ULFA enforces shutdown in Assam

Guwahati, November 09: A dawn-to-dusk general strike enforced by the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) Monday brought normal life to a halt in Assam.

The ULFA has called the 12-hour shutdown, which began at 6 a.m., demanding the release of two of their arrested leaders – ‘foreign secretary’ Sasha Choudhury and ‘finance secretary’ Chitraban Hazarika.

Shops, businesses and educational institutions remained closed, while most public and private transport kept off the roads.

“One fourth of the trauma cases succumb to road accidents due to multiple chest injury and most of these can easily be saved if they are properly treated,” said Dr Ansari.

Guj CID lodges complaint against 7 disciples of Asaram Bapu

Ahmedabad, November 09: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Gujarat have registered a case of death due to negligence against seven followers of spiritual Guru Asaram Bapu in connection with the mysterious death of two boys at the Asaram Gurukul last year.

CID had registered a case against seven followers under Section 304 of IPC following an investigation and a lie detection test of three disciples of Asaram Ashram, the police said yesterday.

Ludhiana, Nov 09: Dr Rajinder Gulati, Incharge of Pediatrics Department, ESIC Model Hospital, Ludhiana has been awarded ‘Fellowship of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (FIAP) – 2009.’

A total of 10 nominees were awarded FIAP from whole of India during the year 2009. Dr Gulati is the only recipient from Punjab this year. Colombo, November 09: The Sri Lankan cricket captain Kumar Sangakkara said India would be under pressure to maintain their home record of not losing a single Test to Sri Lanka in their previous 14 encounters.

Sangakkara, speaking at a press conference after arriving here this morning for a three Test, five ODI and two Twenty20 internationals, said he and his teammates would do everything to break the jinx but the hosts would not be without any pressure either.

Gang involved in making fake notes busted

New Delhi, November 09: Police today busted an international gang involved in making fake notes and seized fake notes worth Rs 1.24 lakh after arresting five persons here.

Superintendent of Police, K P Venkateshwar said based on a tip-off, a police team conducted a raid at a hotel here and arrested gangsters — Mustkim and Azad. During interrogation, the duo confessed that the fake notes were supplied by Delhi-based Maya alias Mrityunjay Verma.

With the help of the arrested persons, police located the gang’s kingpin Maya and two other members –Ramniwas and Manoj and arrested them.

Student groups see eye-to-eye on varsity status for Presidency

Kolkata, Nov 09: Both the warring student factions at Presidency College, Kolkata, have never seen eye-to-eye on any issue. But things seem to be different when it comes to their demand to grant the college the university status.

The Students Federation of India (SFI), which is representing the students’ body and the Independent’s Consolidation (IC), the Opposition, is pressing together for the university status.

Mumbai, Nov 09: Kandivili police on Sunday arrested four persons for allegedly accepting bets during the One-day International between India and Australia.

Following a tip-off, the police raided a flat in Prabhu Nivas building in Kandivili West opposite the railway station, arrested the alleged bookies — Paresh Bhatia, Sandeep Bhatia, Manish Shah and Ketan Shah — and recovered two TV sets, 63 mobile phones, three laptops, two notebooks and Rs 1,300 in cash from them.

A college for the disabled, first in state

Mumbai, Nov 09: The State on Sunday got its first dedicated college for students with disabilities. The Sanskardham Academy Junior College in Goregaon has been set up especially for students with impaired hearing.

It will offer arts and commerce courses for Classes XI and XII under the HSC board.

Mumbai has 18 municipal schools and around 143 private schools for physically and mentally disabled children but does not have a college specifically for the disabled.

Fake CID officers held for robbery

Mumbai, November 09: Officers of the Shahu Nagar police station have arrested three imposters for posing as CID officers and robbing cash and valuables from people after kidnapping and threatening them with consequences.

“Anklesh Thakur, 35, Rashid Patel, 45, and Kanisht Singh, 29, were arrested and a Qualis car they had hired from a travel agency at Malad to commit crime has been seized,” senior inspector Waman Ghadigaonkar said, adding that Thakur was also involved in some robbery cases in Mumbai and Thane. Their fourth associate, Mukhtar, escaped.
