Mandira Bedi to resume work soon

Mumbai, November 09: Popular TV personality and actress Mandira Bedi, who broke her leg on a reality show seven weeks ago, is likely to resume work soon.

She was on bed rest after fracturing her leg during “Khatron Ka Khiladi” Level-2 hosted by Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar.

In Teacher’s Achievement Awards, Mandira Bedi told, “Till yesterday (Saturday) I was walking with a stick. After seven weeks of bed rest, today for the first time I stepped out of home. Now I am more or less fit to start my work.”

Sensex rises 107 points in opening trade

Mumbai, Nov 09: The BSE benchmark index Sensex gained over 100 points in opening trade on Monday, continuing its winning streak for the fourth day, on buying by funds and retail investors after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said his government would pursue reforms to feed economic growth.

Firming trends at other Asian bourses also influenced the trading sentiments.

The 30-share Bombay Stock Exchange index rose by 107.95 points to 16,268.23 points in opening trade. The barometer had surged by over 752 points in the past three sessions.

Gorbachev urges US to withdraw from Afghanistan

Washington, November 09: Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev has urged the United States to withdraw all its military forces from Afghanistan.

Gorbachev told CNN in an interview on Sunday that “withdrawal from Afghanistan should be the goal.”

The Soviet Union’s last leader also advised US President Barack Obama against sending additional troops to Afghanistan. “I think that what’s needed is not additional forces.”

He made the remarks as Washington mulls sending as many as 40,000 additional troops to Afghanistan.

Strong quake shakes Indonesian island

Jakarta, November 09: A 6.7-magnitude earthquake has shaken the Indonesian island of Sumbawa, with initial reports saying some buildings were damaged in the region.

The US Geological Survey reported on Monday that the quake struck in the early hours with its epicenter about 16 kilometers (10 miles) from the town of Raba.

There had been reports of panic in the areas where a strong tremor was felt, but no tsunami warning was issued.

The Indonesian crisis center said they were checking reports that some walls of houses had collapsed.

Ahmadinejad meets Gul and Erdogan in Istanbul

Tehran, November 09: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has held meetings with Turkish President Abdullah Gul and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul.

Ahmadinejad arrived in Istanbul on Sunday to attend the 25th Session of the Standing Committee for Economic and Commercial Cooperation (COMCEC) of the Organization of the Islamic Conference.

The Iranian president first met with Erdogan and then met with Gul.

Ahmadinejad and the two Turkish leaders reportedly discussed important regional and bilateral issues.

The three-day COMCEC meeting opened on Sunday.

Prospects for breakthrough nil ahead of DC meeting

Washington, November 09: The meeting between US President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on November 9 is likely to further infuriate the Palestinians.

The Palestinians are already frustrated with Obama’s shift in policy to allow expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, labeled by many countries as illegal.

The Palestinians say Israel has deeply encroached into land the Palestinians claim for a future state.

Israel is not a tolerant society: US State Department

Washington, November 09: Israel drastically fails to meet all requirements of a tolerant pluralistic society, according to a US State Department report issued on Saturday.

The report, written by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, indicates that Israel is discriminating against Muslims, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Christians, women, Bedouins, and even Reform Jews, the Israeli daily Haaretz reported on Sunday.

Israel does not treat ethnic groups on equal terms and also does not show any respect toward certain holy sites and other historic sites, the document added.

Iran hails ‘strategic cooperation’ with Russia

Tehran, November 09: Amid talks between Iran and the world major powers on the nuclear issue, Tehran welcomes the improvement of strategic cooperation with Russia.

“Strategic cooperation with Russia is an option for the Islamic Republic of Iran,” said top Iranian nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili in a meeting with the visiting Deputy Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov in Tehran Sunday.

“Tehran welcomes continuation of talks based on its package of proposals,” he added.

Israel says threat of attack on Iran, no bluff

Jerusalem, November 09: Following years of persistent threats by Israel to attack Iran, Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister rejects speculations that the warnings are just a bluff, insisting they are very real.

Nearly three weeks after three consecutive days of nuclear negotiations between officials from Iran, the United States, Russia and France, Israel’s deputy foreign minister Danny Ayalon accused the Tehran government of stalling tactics.

Speaking to Sky News on Saturday, Ayalon accused Iran of not being sincere in its negotiation with the P5+1 over its uranium enrichment program.

DR Congo makes arrests over attacks in northwest

Kinshasa, November 09: Security forces in the Democratic Republic of Congo have arrested several people blamed for killing dozens and displacing thousands more in last month’s tribal conflict.

A government spokesman said the arrests were made in Dongo in the country’s northwest on Saturday.

“About 100 young people carrying guns and knives have been detained and disarmed,” the AFP news agency quoted him as saying on Sunday.

Police sources say they faced resistance while making arrests, but no one was hurt.

Clinton to focus on Iran, North Korea on tour

Washington, November 09: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton plans to discuss Iran and North Korea with world leaders during her visit to Europe and Asia.

No deal to protect nuclear arsenal, Pakistan says

Islamabad, November 09: Islamabad has strongly rejected a report that the US has been negotiating a deal with the Pakistani military about the security of the South Asian country’s nuclear arsenal.

The Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in statement on Sunday that the nation’s nuclear materials are completely safe and secure.

“Nor will Pakistan, as a sovereign state, ever allow any country to have direct or indirect access to its nuclear and strategic facilities. Any suggestion to this effect is simply preposterous,” the statement read.

32 children killed in Gaza tunnels in last three years

Gaza, November 09: A report published on Saturday showed that 32 Palestinian children have been killed while working in smuggling tunnels under the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt in past three years.

The report, conducted by the Palestinian National Society for Democracy and Law, said 32 children were killed since Israel imposed a blockade on the coastal enclave in mid-2006 and restricted entry of goods to little more than food and medicine.

Thousands in W. Bank urge Abbas to stay

West Bank, November 09: Thousands of Palestinians turned out in the West Bank on Sunday to urge Mahmoud Abbas to run again for the presidency following his announcement that he did not want a second term in the job.

Waving flags, Abbas supporters greeted the president as he conducted a rare tour of towns in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, part of the territories where the Palestinians aim to establish a state.

“Mahmoud Abbas, don’t step down! You are the foundation,” chanted the crowd. The Fatah movement, which Abbas heads, had called for participation in the show of support.

Iraqi MPs pass election law

Baghdad, November 09: Iraqi MPs on Sunday approved a law to govern the country’s general election in early 2010, paving the way to finalize a date for a vote seen as crucial ahead of a US military exit from the country.

The law was passed after weeks of delays and following huge pressure from the United Nations, religious leaders and the United States, with intense lobbying at Parliament on Sunday from American ambassador Christopher Hill.

US President Barack Obama congratulated the MPs, saying the law is an important step toward ensuring a lasting peace.

Goldstone criticizes US reaction to Gaza report

Berlin, November 09: The head of a UN investigation that accused Israel of war crimes in Gaza, Richard Goldstone, has said he is disappointed there has been such a “lukewarm” reaction to his findings in the United States.

The report by Goldstone, a South African jurist, lambasted both sides in the December-January war, which killed up to 1,387 Palestinians and 13 Israelis, but was harsher toward Israel.

US officials warn of anti-Muslim backlash

Abu Dhabi, November 09: US Homeland Security officials are working with groups around United States to head off any possible anti-Muslim backlash following the shootings at Fort Hood in Texas, the agency’s chief said Sunday.

The comments by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano also appeared part of efforts to reassure the Arab world that US authorities were taking measures to quell anti-Islam sentiments after last week’s rampage by an American-born Muslim serving as US Army psychiatrist.

Filipino militants behead captive schoolteacher

Manila, October 09: Suspected al-Qaida-linked militants in the southern Philippines beheaded a schoolteacher after kidnapping him last month, officials said on Monday.

The severed head of Gabriel Canizares, 36, was left in a bag at a gas station on Jolo Island, three weeks after suspected Abu Sayyaf militants stopped a passenger minibus and dragged him away in front of his colleagues, said regional military commander Maj. Gen. Benjamin Dolorfino.

Monorail to make Haj easier next year

Jeddah, November 09: The operation of a monorail system during the Haj next year would facilitate the transport of millions of pilgrims between the holy sites of Makkah, Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah.

Habeeb Zain Al-Abidine, deputy minister of municipal and rural affairs, said the monorails would transport 500,000 pilgrims between the holy sites within six to eight hours.

“This will help withdraw at least 30,000 small and large buses from the Haj service,” said Zain .Al-Abidene while addressing a seminar on civil engineering projects for Haj.

Oil rises above $78 as US dollar slides

Singapore, October 09: Oil prices rose above $78 a barrel on Monday in Asia as a weaker U.S. dollar offset signs of slumping consumer demand.

The benchmark crude for December delivery was up 94 cents to $78.37 a barrel at midday Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Crude has traded inversely to the dollar for months as investors buy commodities such as oil as a hedge against inflation and a weaker U.S. currency. Oil rose to $82 last month, its 2009 high, from $32 in December.

Fiscal stimulus to go next year; fin reforms in offing: PM

New Delhi, October 09: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday ended the suspense over continuation of fiscal stimulus, stating it would be phased out next year and promised a decisive change in the pace of reforms, mainly in the financial sector.

“Like other countries we resorted to a significant stimulus and we will take appropriate action next year to wind this down,” he said at the 25th India Economic Summit in New Delhi.
