Sreesanth fined for verbal tiff with Kulkarni

Nagpur, October 04: Sreesanth, the Rest of India fast bowler, has been fined 60% of his match fee for using offensive language towards a player during the Irani Cup match against Mumbai in Nagpur. Dhawal Kulkarni, the Mumbai seamer, was let off with an official warning for instigating the bowler.

Akram barred from commentary in CL

Johanesburg, October 04: Former Pakistan captain and expert commentator Wasim Akram has been denied permission by the Indian government to do a commentary stint in the Champions League tournament starting in India from October 8.

According to a report in the “Jang” daily newspaper, Wasim, who was in Johannesburg covering the Champions Trophy was all set to fly to India for his fresh stint in the Champions League T20 tournament.

“But at the last moment he was informed by the organizers of the tournament that his services were no longer required in the tournament,” the report said.

I wasn’t fit but decided to play: Younis

Centurion, October 04: Pakistan captain Younis Khan has admitted that despite not being fully fit, he decided to play in the Champions Trophy semifinal, which they lost by five wickets to New Zealand in Johannesburg.

“It was difficult for me. I was in some pain. I had told the team management that I was not fully fit because of the injury. But because of the importance of the tournament, I decided to play as didn’t want to miss the trophy,” Younis said during Captain’s Corner programme on Geo Channel.

England stars may emulate Flintoff, says Pietersen

London, October 04: England batsman Kevin Pietersen believes other players may follow Andrew Flintoff in deciding not to sign central contracts in the future.

Pietersen, 29, feels Flintoff’s decision to reject an incremental contract with the England and Wales Cricket Board in order to have total freedom over his one-day and Twenty20 playing commitments is an indication that central contracts are no longer an ideal fit for the modern game.

Bowlers didn’t let team down: Mishra

Centurion, October 04: Indian leg spinner Amit Mishra today rejected skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s criticism of the team’s bowling in the Champions Trophy, saying the bowlers did not make any mistake and credit should be given to rival batsmen.

“That’s his (Dhoni) personal opinion,” Mishra told reporters here.

Even though the Indian bowlers cut a sorry figure against Pakistan and even in the washed out match against Australia, Mishra felt credit should go to the rival batsmen.

Centurion, October 04: The witch-hunt has started after Pakistan’s defeat in the Champions Trophy semifinal and former captain Aamer Sohail today questioned the role and contribution of coach Intikhab Alam.

“I was surprised at the planning, that included field placements and bowling changes, during the New Zealand innings,” Sohail said.

“If they were mistakes made on the field and if the captain was not clear in his mind, it was the job of the coach and support staff sitting outside to send in the required messages to put things right,” Sohail said.

UK general warns of losing Afghan war

London, October 04: General David Richards, the new head of the British army, has said that the risks to the West would be ‘enormous’ if NATO fails to restore security in the country.

Speaking to the Sunday Telegraph, the British army commander warned of the “terrifying prospect” of defeat for international forces in Afghanistan, and pleaded for a troop surge in the country.

“If al-Qaeda and the Taliban believe they have defeated us; what next? Would they stop at Afghanistan?” he asked.

Salehi gives upbeat forecast on talks with IAEA

Tehran, October 04: Iran’s nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi gives an upbeat forecast for future negotiations with the UN nuclear watchdog, saying Tehran’s nuclear case has been closed.

“As far as safeguards are concerned, Iran’s nuclear issue has been fully resolved,” said Salehi in a Sunday press conference after his meeting with IAEA Chief Mohammad ElBaradei.

Salehi said his meeting with ElBaradei was ‘quite productive’ and hoped that it would gradually help defuse the nuclear dispute once and for all.

After bail, Shiney Ahuja reaches Delhi

New Delhi, October 04:Bollywood actor Shiney Ahuja arrived here from Mumbai Sunday morning after spending 110 days in jail for allegedly raping his domestic help. He was granted bail Thursday.

The actor, accompanied by his wife Anupam, arrived at the New Delhi domestic airport aboard a Kingfisher flight No.303 Sunday at about 11.30 a.m. Shiney’s parents were also there and they left the airport in a Honda Civic car which had an Uttar Pradesh registration.

Pope opens synod on Africa with appeal against exploitation

Rome, October 04: Pope Benedict XVI opened a three-week long synod on Africa Sunday, with a strong appeal against modern-day colonialism and exploitation of the continent’s wealth.

The synod is a mass gathering of bishops from Africa, where there are now thought to be around 150 million Catholics.

The pontiff warned against the plundering of Africa’s wealth, saying that although colonialism was ostensibly in the past it had “never quite finished.”

The resources of the continent have lead to exploitation, conflict and corruption, the German-born pope said.

Record inflow into Nagarjunasagar

Nalgonda, October 04: The Nagarjunasagar Project (NSP) has received a record inflow of 14.1 lakh cusecs on Saturday, the highest in its 53-year history.

With heavy inflows from Srisailam Project (SRSP) continuing to flow in, officials estimate the volume of water to rise to 15 lakh cusecs.

The NSP was designed to discharge a maximum of 15.35 lakh cusecs. According to officials, Saturday’s outflow from NSP was 9.3 lakh cusecs.

The previous record was an inflow of 7.35 lakh cusecs in 1998. Then the outflow was 7.99 lakh cusecs.

Relief remains out of reach

Hyderabad, October 04: Despite government claiming initiation of full-scale measures to provide relief to flood victims in Mahaboobnagar and Kurnool districts, the reports reaching here indicate that the efforts are woefully short of the requirements in the affected areas.

Relief has reportedly not reached a majority of the affected areas even by Saturday evening even as people stranded on rooftops are begging for food and water.

1.8 lakh people shifted to relief camps

Vijaywada, October 04: About 1.8 lakh people from vulnerable areas in Krishna district were shifted to 48 relief camps set up in the district as the level in Krishna river started rising.

Of the 1.8 lakh people shifted, around 1.3 lakh belonged to villages in 17 river bed mandals in the district identified as vulnerable. As many as 50,000 people from vulnerable areas in Vijayawada city were evacuated to relief camps in Vijayawada.

Brimming Hussainsagar poses flood threat

Hyderabad, October 04: Water in the Hussainsagar has already crossed the Full Tank Level and further rain in the twin cities in the next 24 hours may cause floods in lowlying areas along the banks of the lake’s surplus nala.

Heavy rain in the last few days filled up the Hussainsagar and the water is overflowing dangerously. People living in low-lying areas have been alerted and asked to move to safer places.

10 lakh evacuated in Kurnool

Kurnool, October 04: After three days of devastation caused by heavy rains and floods, the entire population in the town (about 10 lakh) barring some people in a couple of colonies were evacuated and shifted to safer places, mostly into relief camps set up by the district administration.

Four Army helicopters and 120 boats were pressed into service and by Saturday evening all those who took shelter for the past 48 hours on the terraces of buildings and high-rise apartments were shifted to safe places.

‘I wish none goes through this nightmare’

Kurnool, October 04: ‘‘It was a nightmare. I do not know how we survived the night, but we did it! I do not wish anyone to go through it,’’ Rauof recalled with a shudder. Rauof and his family, who live in Gaffar Khan Street on the Osmania College road here in Kurnool, had never imagined that they would be stranded in their own home. Not even when the road in front of their house was water logged by 10.30 a.m. on Friday.

Power house at Srisailam submerged

Hyderabad, October 04: The unprecedented inflows into Krishna river have submerged the 770 MW power house of Srisailam Hydro Power Project in the wee hours of Saturday.

Anticipating trouble, the officials shutdown both the 770 MW power house on the right bank and also the 900 MW underground power house on the left bank of the reservoir on Friday night itself.

Power generation at Nagarjuna Sagar Project (NSP) was also affected with heavy inflows from Srisailam. Of the eight power generating units in the NSP, the third unit was flooded with water and the officials stopped the generation.

AP, Karnataka battered by nature

Hyderabad/Banglore, October 04: Heavy rains and surging flood water continued to batter Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh claiming 194 lives and inundating vast swathes of land rendering nearly two million people homeless as authorities battled to reach food and shelter to them.

Rescue efforts were stepped up with troops backed by IAF helicopters shifting marooned people in both the states to safer locations.

200 villages in Andhra Pradesh still under water

Hyderabad, October 04: The flood situation in Andhra Pradesh continued to be grim Sunday as three towns and over 200 villages in the worst-hit districts remained under water.

Though the inflows into Krishna and Tungabhadra rivers have slightly reduced, this has not ended the misery of people in Kurnool and Mahbubnagar, the two worst affected districts due to unprecedented floods over the last three days.

Several trains cancelled today

Hyderabad, October 04: Due to overflowing of water on the two bridges between Guntakal and Wadi (near Mantralayam and Raichur) in Guntakal Division, Tungabhadra bridge between Alampur and Kurnool Town on Hyderabad division and between Panyam and Nandyal of Guntur Division of the South Central Railway, several trains have been cancelled, partially cancelled, diverted or regulated.

TRAINS CANCELLED ON OCTOBER 4 : Train No 2739 Visakhapatnam- Secunderabad Garibrath Express leaving Visakhapatnam on October 4 will remain cancelled.

Flood threat to Hyderabad, other areas

Hyderabad, October 04: The flood fury in river Krishna has cut a devastating swathe in hundreds of villages along its course in Andhra Pradesh. The toll — unofficial reports put it over 100 — does not reflect the magnitude of the devastation.

Thousands have been rendered homeless and remained without food and water for the second consecutive day, most parts of Kurnool and Mahaboobnagar districts were still under knee-deep water and the submerged temple town of Mantralayam resembled just a huge mound of sand after water receded.

IAEA to inspect Fordu facility late October

Tehran, October 04: The visiting head of the UN nuclear watchdog says inspectors from the IAEA are to visit Iran’s new uranium enrichment plant southwest of Tehran in late October.

“I am pleased to say … we agreed that our inspectors would come here on the 25th of October to do the inspection,” International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief, Mohamed ElBaradei told a press conference in Tehran.

The date was confirmed by the country’s atomic chief Ali-Akbar Salehi who was also present at the session.
