Nashik, October 05: Senior CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat alleged that workers in the country were at receiving end due to Centre’s anti-labour policies and promotion of multi-national firms.

“UPA government at the Centre is adopting anti-labourer policy and promoting multi-national companies giving rise to unemployment and workers problems,” Ms. Karat told an election rally at Satpur near here on Sunday night.

Mumbai, October 05: Bollywood’s Bengali beauty Bipasha Basu is quite upset about losing out on the opportunity to play an important role in Mani Ratnam’s ‘Raavan’. Bips was to play Abhishek Bachchan’s wife Mandodari in the film, which also stars Aishwarya Rai, but the latest news suggests that the actress is not doing the film anymore.
When asked about the reason for her role being scrapped, Bips responded, “I am sad… but it’s better than having my role chopped or totally edited… when lot of effort had gone to work out the role for this guest character.”

‘3 killed in blast inside UN office in Islamabad’

Islamabad, October 05: Two Pakistani women and one foreign national were killed Monday in a bomb blast inside a United Nations office in the capital Islamabad, senior police officials said.

“Three people, one of them a foreigner, were killed in the explosion,” senior Islamabad police official Tahir Alam told reporters at the scene. He did not reveal the nationality of the dead foreigner.

Bani Amin, deputy inspector general of Islamabad police operations, said earlier on local television that two of the dead were Pakistani.

• 2 tsp Garlic paste

• 2 tsp Ginger paste
• 1 tsp Chaat masala powder
• 2 tsp Tandoori masala
• 1 tsp Black pepper
• Salt to taste
• Few drops of red food color
• Cooking oil for brushing

Procedure:

• Mix together all ingredients except the ingredients for garnishing.
• Leave it aside for half an hour.

BSF arrest five Pak nationals from creek area in Kutch

Ahmedabad, October 05: Five Pakistani nationals have been arrested from creek area on west coast of Kutch district by the Border Security Force (BSF), police said on Monday.

The incident took place on Sunday, they said, adding the boat in which they were travelling has also been seized.

According to police, the boat carrying five persons onboard had ventured into the creek area following which they were arrested by the BSF.

They are being brought to joint interrogation centre in Bhuj for questioning, they added.

Rains continue to lash Mumbai

Mumbai, October 05: Heavy rains continued to lash the city and adjoining suburbs for the third consecutive day on Monday.

However, there was no disruption of rail and road traffic in the morning rush hours.

The city and suburbs recorded 73.3 mm and 76.2 mm of rainfall respectively till 8.30 am, weather bureau said.

The showers subsided as the day progressed with 5.8 mm of rain in the city and 6.2 mm in the suburbs recorded from 8.30 am till 11.30 am.

More spells of thundershowers and rain with possibility of heavy rains in some areas is expected tomorrow.

Floods: Inundation threat over Vijayawada, toll crosses 200

Hyderabad, October 05: The threat of massive flooding loomed large over Andhra Pradesh’s Vijayawada city and hundreds of villages in Krishna and Guntur districts with the water level in the Prakasam barrage across the Krishna river reaching the maximum level on Monday.

Flood in Krishna threatens to submerge AP villages

Vijayavada, October 05: River Krishna virtually turned into a sea in all its fury on Monday as a record 10.61 lakh cusecs of flood water reached Prakasam Barrage, threatening to submerge some villages.

This is the heaviest flood in river Krishna in more than 106 years as the previous record stands at 10.30 lakh cusecs in 1903, irrigation authorities said.

The water level touched 21.4 feet at Prakasam Barrage and all the 72 sluice gates have been lifted to let out water into Bay of Bengal.

IAEA to inspect Iran’s Qom site Oct. 25

Tehran, October 05: U.N. experts will inspect Iran’s newly disclosed uranium enrichment plant on Oct. 25, the IAEA nuclear agency chief said on Sunday, praising a shift “from conspiracy to cooperation” between Tehran and the West.

The underground nuclear fuel facility near the holy Shi’ite city of Qom had been kept secret until Iran disclosed its existence last month, setting off an international furore.

Iran agreed with six world powers — the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany — in Geneva on Thursday to allow IAEA inspectors unfettered access to the site.

Billions in US aid never reached Pakistan army

Islamabad, October 05: The United States has long suspected that much of the billions of dollars it has sent Pakistan to battle militants has been diverted to the domestic economy and other causes, such as fighting India.

Now the scope and longevity of the misuse is becoming clear: Between 2002 and 2008, while al-Qaida regrouped, only $500 million of the $6.6 billion in American aid actually made it to the Pakistani military, two army generals tell The Associated Press.

150 gangs of drug, human smugglers unearthed

Islamabad, October 05: An intelligence agency has unearthed more than 150 gangs of drug smugglers and human traffickers and warned the government of a looming diplomatic embarrassment over the issue.

According to sources, the agency suggested that law-enforcement personnel posted along the Iranian border should be transferred periodically because postings for long durations provided them an opportunity to develop links with human traffickers and their agents.

Kabul, October 05: Eight years after the fall of the Taliban ushered in a new era for Afghanistan, the country remains a black hole for foreign aid donors who have seen little development for their money.

Fazl offers to mediate between govt and Taliban

Peshawar, October 05: As security forces are all set to launch a major offensive in the tribal region of South Waziristan, Maulana Fazulur Rehman, the chief of his own faction of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam, has offered to ‘mediate’ between the government and militants to avert another crisis.

‘We are ready to negotiate between the government and insurgents in the NWFP and tribal area,’ Maulana Fazl told a conference of Ulema and Madressah teachers at the Arbab Niaz Cricket ground on Sunday.

Two policemen among four killed in Lyari

Karachi, October 05: Two policemen and two residents were killed in Lyari on Sunday in a day-long gunbattle between gangsters and the police. More than 60 people, including women and children, were wounded in crossfire when the two sides freely used guns, rockets and grenades.

Residents of Kalakot and Singhulane, the epicenter of the violence, remained confined to their homes. There were no reports of casualties suffered by the criminals or arrests made by the police, who claimed to have seized arms and ammunition from the gangsters.

At least seven dead as Thai train derails: police

Bangkok, October 05: A passenger train derailed during heavy downpours on Monday killing at least seven people, including a two-year-old girl, and injuring scores of others near a Thai coastal resort, officials said.

The overnight train, travelling from southern Trang province to the capital Bangkok, came off the tracks 13 kilometres (eight miles) south of resort town Hua Hin — a popular tourist getaway and regular retreat of Thailand’s king.

Sensex tanks 236 points in opening trade on Asian cues

Mumbai, October 05: The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex on Monday plunged by over 236 points to dip below 17,000 points level in opening trade as foreign funds and investors sold shares amid weakening global trends.

The 30-share index fell by 236.44 points to 16,898.11 points. All the sectoral indices were trading in the negative zone with losses up to 1.25 per cent.

The BSE barometer had gained 441.55 points in the previous three sessions. The market remained closed on Friday on account of ‘Gandhi Jayanti’

Thekkady boat capsize; steerman, crew member arrested

Thekkady, October 05: The steerman and another crew member of the tourist boat that capsized in Thekkady lake last week, leaving 45 people dead, were arrested on Monday.

The steerman of the double-decker boat Victor Samuel and crew member Anish were arrested by the police team probing the tragedy.

They would be produced before a magistrate court at Peerumade in Idukki district later, police said.

A preliminary probe into the boat tragedy had found that an overcrowded upper deck and the steeersman’s
