Abbas looks for ‘resolution killer’!

Gaza, October 05: The acting Palestinian Authority (PA) chief has launched a campaign to convince his critics he is not responsible for dropping a UN resolution against Israel over war crimes.

The Palestinian Authority requested the UN Human Rights Council to defer a UN vote over Israeli war crimes in the Gaza Strip.

Mahmoud Abbas, facing an unprecedented wave of condemnation and accusations of treason from other Palestinian factions, has ordered the establishment of a commission of inquiry into the issue.

Sonia undertakes aerial survey of flood-hit areas in AP

Hyderabad, October 05: UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi today undertook an aerial survey of the flood-affected Kurnool and Mahabubnagar districts of Andhra Pradesh.

Ms. Gandhi, who arrived here around 10 am, left for aerial survey, with Chief Minister K Rosaiah and state Congress president D Srinivas.

1 million premature babies die annually

Washington, October 05: Premature births have become a concerning global problem, with nearly 13 million cases, nearly 10% of all newborns, and more than one million deaths reported each year.

Babies are born prematurely when delivered less than 37 weeks of the normal 40-week pregnancy, according to a report by the March of Dimes, a leading nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health.

The report shows over four-fifths of all premi-births are reported in developing countries in Africa and Asia, with 4,047,000 pre-term births in Africa and 6,907,000 in Asia.

Cracks in Cong-NCP camp despite patch-up

Pune, October 05: A discordant note has again been struck in the Congress-NCP alliance in Pune district, exposing the superficial nature of the patch-up between city Congress MP Suresh Kalmadi and Minister Ajit Pawar of NCP.

Mr. Kalmadi and Mr. Pawar, long time political rivals in the district, having 21 assembly seats, had publicly buried the hatchet through a dinner diplomacy over the week-end.

They had given a message to party workers that “all was well” and they should leave no stone unturned to support and canvass for the respective candidates finalised in seat-sharing.

Kyrgyzstan eyes air base deals with France, Spain

Kyrgyzstan, October 05: Kyrgyzstan will on Monday consider renewing permission for French and Spanish troops to use its Manas air base with the U.S. military for operations in Afghanistan, parliamentary officials said.

Kyrgystan cancelled deals with France and Spain in March, when it overturned the main agreement with the United States on use of the base.

Another Nigerian leading rebel chief disarms

Abuja, October 05: Another Nigerian militant leader has agreed to lay down his arms and halt fighting in the Niger Delta oil hub, under a government amnesty which expires Sunday.

Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as ‘Tompolo’, is the third and last known factional leader with links to Nigeria’s main armed group, the Movement for Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) to surrender.

AP Govt’s estimate of loss due to flood Rs 12,225 cr

Hyderabad, October 05: The Andhra Government has put the preliminary estimate of the damages caused by the flood in Krishna river at Rs. 12,225 crore.

Also, Chief Minister K. Rosaiah has requested the Centre to consider the flood disaster as a national calamity of rare severity and release Rs. 6,000 crore to the State under the National Calamity Contingency Fund as advance for taking up relief, rehabilitation and restoration works on war footing.

N Korea accused of possessing chemical weapons

Seoul, October 05: South Korea’s defense ministry claims that its northern neighbor has one of the world’s largest stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons.

North Korea has 13 types of viruses and germs which can be used in biological weapons, as well as up to 5,000 tons of chemical weapons, the ministry said in a report on Monday.

Seoul estimated Pyongyang’s stockpile of chemical weapons at between 2,500 to 5,000 tons, according to the ministry’s report to parliament.

Guinea leader claims innocence in killings

Abuja, October 05: The military leader of Guinea says he bears ‘no responsibility’ for last week’s bloody crackdown on opposition protestors, in which over 150 people were killed.

While regretting the recent bloodbath, President Moussa Dadis Camara stressed Sunday that he was ‘blameless’ for the September 28 massacre at a stadium in the country’s capital, Conakry.

Iraq to further delay hydrocarbons law: MP

Baghdad, October 05: A senior Iraqi lawmaker says the country will delay the discussion of a stalled hydrocarbons law until after the parliamentary elections in January.

The law has been held up for three years due to disagreements between MPs from the country’s majority Shia and minority Sunni, Kurd and other communities.

It would regulate the oil sector and divide responsibility between the central government in Baghdad and Iraq’s provinces.

Hamas: PA trades in blood of Gaza children

Gaza, October 05: The democratically-elected premier of Hamas government in Gaza has lambasted the Palestinian Authority over its decision to delay a vote on a report about the Israeli war crimes in Gaza.

Ismail Haniya also slammed as “reckless and irresponsible” the decision by the UN Human Rights Council to postpone consideration of the damning report.

“The decision taken by Ramallah to withdraw the Goldstone report was reckless and irresponsible,” Haniya said, referring to the Western-backed government of the acting Palestinian Authority chief Mahmoud Abbas.

Washington, October 05: Giant chipmaker Intel has recently conducted a study, concluding that Microsoft Windows 7 has improved in performance and stability compared to Windows XP SP3.

The study titled “The Value of PC Refresh with Microsoft Windows 7” takes into consideration Windows 7’s user adoption, performance, stability and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

More than 290 out of 300 Intel users said they “would recommend Microsoft Windows 7 to colleagues,” the study said.

Musharraf: US lost track of Bin Laden 5 years ago

Islamabad, October 05: Former Pakistani military ruler Pervez Musharraf says that the US and Pakistani intelligence services were closing in on Osama Bin Laden five years ago but suddenly lost track.

Musharraf, who is currently on a lecture tour of the US, told students and delegates at a college in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on Friday that both Pakistani and US intelligence have failed to collect any details regarding Bin Laden’s whereabouts.

Three militant supporters arrested in Rajouri

Srinagar, October 05: Three supporters of Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) were arrested by the security forces in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. The trio, identified as Mohammad Sharief, Majid and Qayoom, were arrested from a hideout in Manjakot area of the border district last evening, they said.

Yet another wildfire raging through California

California, October 05: Fire fighters in California are struggling with yet another wind-driven wildfire that is raging in San Bernardino Mountains, forcing mass evacuations.

The fire that broke out on Saturday near Lytle Creek, a small community surrounded by the San Bernardino National Forest, has so far burnt 14,164,000 square meters (3,500 acres) of land.

The firefighters were only able to contain 10 of the flames by Sunday, as over 4,000 residents were ordered to evacuate the area. No injuries have been reported.

2 NATO soldiers reported killed in Afghanistan

Kabul, October 05: Two more NATO soldiers, including one American, are reported dead in the latest fighting in Afghanistan.

A NATO statement says the U.S. soldier died of wounds suffered in an insurgent attack in southern Afghanistan on Sunday.

The statement says a second service member died of wounds in a roadside bombing Monday in southern Afghanistan. NATO is not releasing the service member’s nationality.

Jordan slams Israel’s closure of al-Aqsa Mosque

Jordan, October 05: The Jordanian Foreign Ministry has taken diplomatic measures to protest Israel’s closure of the al-Aqsa Mosque in al-Quds.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the foreign ministry called “all Israeli measures” in the holy city “illegal” and said they violated “Israel’s commitments as an occupation power.”

Under a peace treaty which Jordan concluded with Israel in 1994, Israel acknowledged the Hashemite Kingdom’s right to look after the Muslim and Christian shrines in east al-Quds, which is still considered by the United Nations an occupied territory.

3 dead, 4 seriously injured in NY speedboat crash

New York, October 05: Three people were killed and four others seriously injured when their 40-foot powerboat plowed onto marshland on a moonlit Sunday night off Long Island’s southern shore, authorities said.

The Hustler speedboat was navigating a channel in an area dotted with boggy salt marshes, just south of Wantagh, when it ran aground, authorities said. The boat’s captain was thrown off the craft, and pronounced dead by rescuers when they arrived.

Pakistan’s new Taliban chief threatens revenge

Islamabad, October 05: Pakistan’s new Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud has met journalists, ending speculation about his death, and vowed to avenge drone attacks and the killing of his predecessor Baitullah Mehsud.

Hakimullah Mehsud met reporters Sunday in the country’s tribal area for the first time since gaining control over the militant outfit, Dawn reported Monday.

His dramatic appearance finally ended speculation that he was killed in a leadership battle within the militant group, sparked by the August slaying of Baitullah Mehsud in a missile strike.

Six students injured in minor fire in Delhi school

New Delhi, October 05: Six students were today injured when a fire broke out in an MCD school in south-west Delhi, an incident which brought to the fore the need to improve safety measures in government and civic-body run educational institutions. The blaze was reported from the MCD primary school in Bapraula village in Najafgarh at around 11:15 am, fire brigade officials said.

Mumbai, October 05: Hema Malini’s film, Tell Me Oh Khuda, the one she had planned for her daughter Esha is finally in its pre-production stage. Starring Arjan Bajwa opposite Esha, the film is about a girl who is on the search for her father.

It bears too much resemblance to Hema Malini’s first and only film as a director, Dil Aashna Hai which was about a girl on the lookout for her mother and starred Divya Bharati and Shah Rukh Khan.
