UN report calls for ‘new deal’ for migrant workers

Paris, October 05: Governments worldwide should look at changes to their immigration policies with a view to offering a “new deal” to migrant workers whose skills can help spur economic recovery, a UN report said on Sunday.

Wealthy countries with ageing populations in particular are likely to face an increase in demand for expatriate labour as they pull out of recession, said the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the report.

Rosaiah occupies chief minister’s chair

Hyderabad, October 05 : More than a month after he took over, K. Rosaiah Monday entered the chief minister’s office at the state secretariat here – at a time fixed by his astrologers.

Amid chanting of Vedic hymns by priests, the 77-year-old Rosaiah, who also holds the finance portfolio, occupied the chief minister’s office at 9.19 a. m., the time fixed by his astrologers.

Rajnath Singh accuses Congress of price rise

Nashik, October 05: BJP’s national president Rajanath Singh said that Congress despite being in power for 55 years failed to strengthen the country and pressurised neighbouring countries harbouring terrorists.

German Chancellor Merkel to address Congress

Berlin, October 05: German Chancellor Angela Merkel will address the U.S. Congress in early November, ahead of ceremonies in Berlin marking the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Merkel’s spokesman Thomas Steg said Monday the chancellor has accepted the invitation of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to address the House and the Senate. She is only the second German government leader to address Congress; Chancellor Konrad Adenauer spoke in 1957.

Minor raped by ‘tantrik’

Muzaffarnagar, October 05: A minor Dalit girl was allegedly raped by a godman in a village here, police said today.

The parents of the 10-year-old girl had left her to the godman’s ashram for cure of some ailment two days ago in Adli village but was allegedly raped.

The girl reached home yesterday and narrated the incident to her parents who lodged a police complaint in this regard.

The ‘tantrik’ is on the run and police have registered the case.

Autopsy of Japan’s ex-finance chief inconclusive

Tokyo, October 05: An initial autopsy of former Japanese finance minister Shoichi Nakagawa found cardiovascular abnormalities and alcohol in his body, but was unable to determine the cause of death, reports said on Monday.

Police will conduct further examinations, which will require a few more days, according to Jiji Press and other media.

Nakagawa, who resigned in February over his apparently drunken behaviour at a meeting of world powers on the global financial crisis, was found dead on Sunday at his home. He was 56.

Younus rues dropping catch after Pakistan’s Trophy exit

Islamabad, October 05: Pakistan skipper Younus Khan blamed himself after dropping a crucial catch in the Champions Trophy semi-final defeat against New Zealand, saying the elimination was the biggest disappointment of his career.

“Personally that moment when I dropped Grant Elliot in the semi-final still haunts me and will continue to haunt me,” he told reporters on Monday after the team’s return from South Africa.

Obama postpones meeting with Dalai Lama: Report

Washington, October 05: The White House has postponed a meeting between the Dalai Lama and President Barack Obama until after Obama’s meeting with Chinese leader Hu Jintao next month, the Washington Post reported on Monday.

The Post said it would be the first time since 1991 that the Tibetan spiritual leader will visit Washington and not meet the US president. He has visited Washington 10 times over that time span.

Farhan scares Kartik Calling Kartik unit

Mumbai, October 05: Farhan Akhtar gave everyone on the sets of Kartik Calling Kartik a good scare when he pretended to collapse. The scene required him to have a telephone wire coiled around his neck.

So, when director Vijay Lalwani put a little pressure while tying it around his neck, Farhan collapsed. He was given a pillow to cushion his head, his hands were massaged to boost blood circulation and he was given water. They even called for an ambulance when Farhan owned up to the prank.

Police massed after Jerusalem clashes

Jerusalem, October 05: Police massed in Jerusalem’s Old City on Monday following clashes with Palestinians near the Al-Aqsa mosque compound and as tens of thousands of Jews were expected to attend a religious ceremony.

Authorities restricted access to the compound to Muslim men aged 50 and over, with no restrictions for women, following Sunday’s clashes in which seven Palestinian protesters were injured and three arrested.

N Korea has 100 sites linked to nuke programme: S Korea

Seoul, October 05: South Korea knows of about 100 sites linked to North Korea’s nuclear programme and has the capacity to strike them if an attack from the North is imminent, the Defence Minister said on Monday.

“There are about 100 sites related to the nuclear” programme, Kim Tae-Young told legislators during a parliamentary audit of his Ministry’s work.

“We have a complete list of them,” Yonhap news agency quoted him as saying.

Kim expressed confidence his forces could hit any of them “if it is absolutely clear a North Korean offensive is imminent.”

Busy Hopes drops in on the Bulls

Melbourne, October 05: James Hopes, Australia’s one-day allrounder, faces another hectic week after being chosen for Queensland’s opening match of the domestic season against Western Australia in Perth on Sunday.

Hopes is part of the Champions Trophy squad in South Africa and will make an FR Cup appearance with the Bulls before rejoining the national side for their limited-overs tour of India.

Australia have seven one-dayers starting from October 25 and Hopes is expected to be part of that squad. He received limited opportunities in the Champions Trophy ahead of Monday night’s final.

Patta Gobhi Paratha

Ingredients:
small size or 1/4 kg – patta gobhi
1 – medium sized onion chopped fine
1 to 2 – green chilli, chopped fine
1 tsp – ginger- garlic paste
2 tsp – jeera
1 tsp – turmeric powder
1 tsp – saunf
4 to 5 leaves – curry leaves
oil /ghee as per requirement
2 tbsp – maida
wheat floor as per requirement
salt to taste

Method

Wash and Cut Gobhi into very small pieces.
Heat oil in Kadhai/Pan, add jeera, curry leaves, turmeric, green chilli, ginger garlic paste and chopped onion.
Fry until little brown then add chopped Gobhi.

Body found in canal; four police personnel suspended

Dehra Dun, October 05: Four police personnel have been suspended and a case registered against them for allegedly throwing a woman”s body into a canal near here, officials said today. Sub-Inspector Raghubir Singh, also incharge of Harbartpur police post where the incident took place, and three constables were suspended last evening after preliminary investigations suggested that they allegedly threw the woman”s body into the Shakti canal, Station House Officer of Vikasnagar J C Pathak said.

Ponting urges calm

Sample audit in Afghan vote gets under way

Kabul, October 05: Afghan authorities began a sample audit of suspect ballots in the controversial elections on Monday, officials said, as the country inches closer to a final decision on the next president.

Afghans went to the polls on August 20 to elect their president for the next five years, but allegations of widespread fraud — mainly directed against the incumbent Hamid Karzai — have delayed the announcement of a winner.

Karzai leads the preliminary results with around 55 percent of the vote. He needs 50 percent plus one vote to be declared the winner.

NSW want Yuvraj for T20 Big Bash

New Delhi, October 05: Yuvraj Singh’s exploits in Twenty20 cricket have grabbed the attention of Australian state side New South Wales Blues, which wants to rope in the Indian star for their domestic Twenty20 tournament.

According to a top NSW player, the management is likely to contact Yuvraj and try to get him on board for the Twenty20 tournament, which starts from December 28 this year to January 23, 2010.

Karachi, October 05: Holding his “fishy decisions” responsible for Pakistan’s defeat against New Zealand in the Champions Trophy semifinal, Basit Ali and a senior PCB official today reviled Simon Taufel and demanded an inquiry into his alleged “sub-standard” umpiring.

Pakistan lost the semifinal by five wickets on Saturday to crash out of the elite ICC event.

Ali adjured the Pakistan Cricket Board to approach the ICC for holding an inquiry into Taufel’s umpiring.

Padang, October 05: Rescue workers called off the search on Monday for life under the rubble left by a massive earthquake, focusing instead on bringing aid to survivors in the towns and hills of western Indonesia, despite being hampered by torrential rains.

“After all this time I consider, from various experiences, it will be difficult to find more people alive,” Ignacio Leon, the head of the UN’s humanitarian agency in Indonesia, told The Associated Press.

Johanesburg, October 05: Australia captain Ricky Ponting has told his team to get ready for “big moments” in the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand here on Monday.

Indians bash up Aussies after racial attack

Melbourne, October 05: Two locals, who allegedly abused a group of Indians and vandalised their car, were bashed up by them here, police said on Monday.

The incident took place at a carpark outside Meadowglen International Athletics Stadium in Epping when a local skateboarder damaged the rear window of a car belonging to an Indian.

The skateboarder also used the abusive language against some Indians who were coming of the stadium where a Kabaddi match had ended last night.

Canadian PM to visit India in November

Toronto, October 05: Responding to an invitation from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper will visit India in November.

Though no official announcement of the Prime Minister’s visit has yet been made, Canwest news agency quoted official sources in Ottawa as saying that Harper will be in India during November 15-18.

During his meetings with the Indian Prime Minister, Harper will in all likelihood ink a free trade agreement to boost bilateral trade between the two countries.

Bhoona Gosht

Ingredients 6 pieces of dry meat
10 green chilies
1/2 tsp. Salt
2 tsp. Tomato puree
1 tsp. ginger
2 tbsp. of oil

Method 1.Grill the dry pieces meat in a tandoor or oven until brown.
2.Remove them from the grill cut into small pieces and keep aside.
3.Wash ginger and green chilies and grind.
4.Now take a pan and place on the fire.
5.Pour in oil and add green chilies, ginger paste, tomato puree and cook the brown pieces of meat.
6.Add a little water and shake properly for a few seconds and serve steaming hot.
