Blast in Islamabad’s UN office kills three

Islamabad, October 05: Three people, including a foreigner, were killed Monday in a suicide bomb blast at the UN World Food Programme office in an upscale locality of this Pakistan capital.

The UN temporarily suspended all its operations. Ishrat Rizvi, national information officer for the United Nations Information Centre in Islamabad, said: “We have temporarily suspended our operations in Pakistan due to the security risks to the UN staff.”

Captive turtle found to have infectious disease

Sydney, October 05: An Australian veterinary student said Monday she has documented the country’s first known case of a bred-in-captivity turtle acquiring a highly infectious disease which could potentially spread to humans.

Debbie Bannan said the freshwater turtle had never been in the wild, but managed to acquire a mycobacteria, a pathogen capable of infecting animals and humans, which ultimately led to its death.

“How did it get mycobacterium? We don’t know that,” she told AFP. “How does it get to a turtle in a fish tank in a little kid’s room somewhere?”

South Sudan tribal clashes leave 23 dead

Cairo, October 05: At least 23 people were killed and more than a thousand fled their homes in ethnic clashes in volatile south Sudan over the weekend, a Sudanese official said on Monday.

Dinka and Mundari tribesmen clashed throughout the weekend in two Central Equatoria State villages near the southern capital of Juba, Hussein Mar, deputy governor of neighbouring Jonglei state, told AFP.

“The violence killed at least 23 people, including six civilians and four soldiers,” he said, adding that 1,700 had been displaced in the fighting.

Ousted UN official stands by election complaint

Washington, October 05: An American ousted as the No. 2 official at the U.N. mission in Afghanistan says he has no second-thoughts about assertions that it failed to aggressively probe allegations of vote fraud in the August presidential election.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon last week fired Peter Galbraith as deputy envoy recently, although the U.N. chief didn’t say specifically what the differences were.

Honduras, October 05: A Jewish civil rights organization is expressing alarm over conspiracy theories claiming Jews and Israel aided the ouster of the Honduran president and attempts to dislodge him from his refuge in the Brazilian Embassy.

The U.S.-based Anti-Defamation League cited statements made by ousted President Manuel Zelaya as well as the news director of a radio station that was closed by the interim government in Honduras and by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, among others.

Steward key witness in AI airhostess assault

New Delhi, October 05: The day after four crew members of Air India—two pilots, an airhostess and a flight purser—came to blows in the cockpit and galley of a Sharjah-Delhi-Lucknow flight, Delhi Police made one of them a witness in the case.

On Saturday, an airhostess had pressed charges against pilots Commander Ranbeer Arora and Captain Aditya Chopra for allegedly trying to molest her inside the cockpit. The stewardess said when she resisted, the pilots pushed her out.

Southwest monsoon active in North-Eastern region

Pune, October 05: The southwest monsoon has been vigorous in west Madhya Pradesh, Konkan and Goa and central Maharashtra and active in Nagaland-Manipur-Mizoram-Tripura and Vidarbha, MeT office said here on Monday.

It has been subdued over west Rajasthan, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu and north interior Karnataka, it added.

Carrot kheer

Ingredients:
1. Carrot – 3
2. Milk – 2 cups
3. Sugar – ¾ cup or to taste
4. Ghee – 2 tsp
5. Cashew nuts – 2 tsp (broken into small pieces)
6. Badam – 2 tsp ( broken into small pieces)
7. Pista – 2 tsp ( broken into small pieces)
8. Cardamom powder – a pinch

Kheer Preparation:
Wash and peel the carrots.

Cut into three or four pieces and cook till the carrots are tender and make a fine paste.

Now take a heavy bottomed pan and add milk.

Bring it to boil for 10 mins.

Then add the carrot paste and cardamom powder.

Stir well.

Bomb scare forces evacuation of Iraqi parliament

Baghdad, October 05: A bomb scare forced the evacuation Saturday of the Iraqi parliament building after explosives-sniffing dogs alerted authorities to a possible threat an hour before lawmakers were to meet.

The Iraqi government issued no statement about whether explosives were found in the building, citing an ongoing investigation. The evacuation only heightened concerns about security breaches in Iraqi government buildings, which were targeted in August by coordinated bombings that killed 100 people and injured hundreds of others.

2 UK ministers in Pakistan for security talks

Islamabad, October 05: Britain’s home and defense secretaries have arrived in Pakistan, amid growing public opposition to Islamabad’s security cooperation with the West.

Home Secretary Alan Johnson and Defense Secretary Bob Ainsworth are to meet with President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, army chief General Ashfaq Kayani and other top ministers in the two-day visit.

They saidd they plan to discuss ways to promote counter-terrorism and defense cooperation between Pakistan and Britain.

Beetroot halwa

Ingredients:
1. Beetroot – ½ kg
2. Milk – 750 ml
3. Ghee – 2 tbsp
4. Sugar – 3 cups or to taste

Garnishing ingredients:
1. Cardamom powder – a pinch
2. Cashew nut – 6 (roasted)
3. Pista – 4
4. Badam – 4

Preparation:
Peel and grate the beetroot.

Keep it aside.

Now take the pan and add 2 tbsp of ghee and heat.

Then add the grated beetroot.

Stir well on low flame till the raw smell disappears.

Add milk and cook on low flame till the beetroot is tender.

Once it starts thickening stir continuously.

Then add sugar.

Cook further till thickness.

US trying to downplay Iran’s Geneva achievements

Washington, October 05: On the same day the IAEA chief once again assured that no evidence has been found to prove Iran is after nuclear arms, the US ambassador to the UN warns of ‘a wide range of sanctions’ against Tehran.

In what appears to be an effort to downplay Iran’s achievements in its wide-ranging talks with P5+1 group which was held based on Iran’s package of proposal- presented earlier to Western states-, Susan Rice said Washington and its veto-holding allies are already studying the sanction options if Iran does not prove the peaceful nature of its nuclear program.

Spain says trawler hijacking drama might drag on

Madrid, October 05: The Indian Ocean hijacking of a Spanish tuna trawler and its 36-member crew could drag on, Spain’s defense minister said Monday.

Pirates seized the Alakrana on Friday and sailed the ship to a port in Somalia. A Spanish navy frigate was following the ship.

While the trawler was still at sea, two alleged hijackers left the ship in a skiff and were captured by Spanish forces while heading for shore. One was shot in the operation.

12 die as cyclone hits Gujarat

Ahmedabad, October 05: As many as 12 persons have died after cyclonic winds with rain and thunderstorm lashed South Gujarat and Saurashtra regions of the state in the last 24 hours, state control room officials said here on Monday.

These deaths have occurred in the last 24 hours due to wall collapse, felling of tree and being hit by lightning, they said.

Four persons including a woman and her two children died after being buried under a compound wall which collapsed following rain and strong winds in Taragdi village on the outskirts of Rajkot city on Sunday.

Obama congratulates Papandreou on Greek polls

Washington, October 05: US President Barack Obama called up Greece’s next prime minister, George Papandreou, to congratulate him on his success in Sunday’s elections, the White House said.

Obama “wished all Greeks well who participated in the democratic process. The President reiterated the importance of the US-Greece relationship and said he looks forward to working with Mr Papandreou”, according to a statement released by the White House.

Iran says no change in nuclear stance after Geneva talks

Tehran, October 05: There has been no change in the Iranian nuclear stance and the issue was not raised in the Geneva talks with the world powers, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hassan Ghashghavi said Monday.

“We have not raised anything about our right to pursue peaceful nuclear technology in the Geneva talks,” the spokesman said.

Ghashghavi said the Geneva meeting addressed Tehran’s proposal dealing with general global issues, but not the Iranian nuclear programme.

Italian PM visits Sicily after landslide kills 23

Messina, October 05: Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi visited landslide survivors in Sicily on Sunday as bulldozers found another body in the devastated area where at least 23 people were killed last week.

Rescuers near Messina on the east of the island found the body of a Polish woman, whose four-year-old daughter is among 35 still missing, as Berlusconi said that those affected would be exempt from taxes.

“We will block taxes and credit repayments for residents of the area affected by the landslide,” he told survivors at a hotel in Messina where 190 people have taken shelter.
