Online help for students

Manama, September 27: Several schools in Bahrain are offering online services to help pupils catch up on coursework un-til they return to classes.

Some are also giving students assignments to complete at home to ensure they do not fall too far behind.

Most schools were due to re-open today but were ordered to remain closed because of swine flu fears.

Health and Education ministries last week announced a decision to close all secondary schools until October 4, intermediate until October 11, primary until October 18 and kindergartens and special needs centres until November 1.

Couple haunted by son’s death

Manama, September 27: A BAHRAINI family, haunted by the death of a three-year-old boy who was electrocuted at his home, are planning to move out.

Mohammed Abdulhadi Attyah Abdulhassan died in the bathroom while his mother was giving him a bath on the eve of Eid Al Fitr.

His father Abdulhadi told the GDN that he and his wife could not stay in their house following the tragic accident.

“We feel heartbroken every time we go to the bathroom where the incident happened,” he said.

“We decided to start looking for a new house as we can’t take it any more.”

PM returns home after G20 summit

New Delhi, September 27: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh returned here Sunday after attending the two-day G20 Summit in Pittsburgh, US.

The summit was hosted by US President Barack Obama in which developing countries like India were assured a greater say in the affairs of the global financial system.

US to demand immediate opening of Iranian nuclear site

Washington, September 27: The world powers led by the United States will insist in a meeting Thursday with an Iranian delegation that Tehran immediately open its newly revealed nuclear plant to international inspectors, the Washington Post reported online.

The existence of the second Iranian nuclear facility was revealed Friday in an announcment by US President Barack Obama, who joined with leaders from Britain and France to accuse Tehran of concealing from UN inspectors the plant, which is believed to be intended for enriching uranium.

20 crore new jobs in next two decades

New Delhi, September 27: India could add around 20 crore new jobs in the organized sector over the next 20 years if the economy grows at the rate of 7 per cent, according to Mohandas Pai, director HR and training, Infosys Technologies.

Pai was speaking on ‘Employment and Employability-The Road Ahead’ at the India Leadership Conclave 2009 Summit, an initiative of Wockhardt Foundation, in the capital on Saturday. The summit was presented by business chamber Assocham and DNA newspaper.

Khar women robbed of valuables while in car

Mumbai, September 27: The Khar police are on the look out of two unidentified men who attacked two young women and robbed them of valuables worth Rs30,000 at knifepoint.

On Friday evening, Khar resident Dimple Bhatija was in her car, parked on the Shirley Rajan Road in Khar along with her friend Kim Pandit. The duo was chatting when two armed men forcibly entered the car and threatened them.

15 rebels killed in clashes with Yemeni Army

Sanna, September 27: The Yemeni Army Saturday said at least 15 rebels were killed in clashes in the north, bringing the number of militants killed in the area in the past two days to 40, according to a media report.

The army was confronted with the rebels in the western part of Saada province in northern Yemen, killing 15 of them and wounding several others, Qatar-based Arab TV channel Al Jazeera reported citing a military source.

Swine flu drugs available

Mumbai, September 27: While the two new effective drugs to counter H1N1 virus — Fluvir and Natflu — or Oseltamivir (generic name for tamiflu) have been made available at chemist shops in Mumbai in the past four days, there are hardly any sales or even enquiries for the drug coming in, said chemists.

Only chemists with a ‘Schedule X’ licence can sell the drug. To ensure that the drug is readily available to the public, the state government has also issued as many as 91 fresh licenses last week, bringing to 143 the number of designated medical shops with the license to sell the drug.

Family held hostage in Gurgaon home

New Delhi, September 27: The family of a seniorexecutive was held hostage by a group of armed robbers for over two hours in their house in an up-market colony close to the Delhi airport on Friday night. The stand-off came to an end after over 60 commandos of the Haryana police and robbers exchanged fire for over an hour, in which two of the robbers were killed.

US will carry out nuclear deal with India: PM

Pittsburgh, September 27: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Friday that President Barack Obama had assured him that this week’s UN Security Council resolution, calling for universal adherence to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), would not prevent America from helping India meet its energy needs as a part of the India-US civil nuclear energy deal.

54 killed in storm in the Philippines

Manila, September 27: At least 54 people were killed as tropical storm Ketsana battered a wide area in the Philippines, dumping record rainfall on the capital, officials said Sunday.

Twenty-one people were missing in floods and landslides caused by Ketsana, according to Defence Secretary Gilbert Teodoro, who also heads the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC).

Authorities rushed rescue and relief to thousands of people who spent the night on the roofs of their submerged houses in Manila and surrounding provinces.

Indo-Pak foreign secretaries meet ahead of ministers

New York, September 27: The Indian and Pakistani foreign secretaries met here Saturday to prepare the ground for the crucial talks between their foreign ministers where India is expected to focus on terrorism and demand speedy action against 26/11 perpetrators.

Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao and her Pakistani counterpart Salman Bashir met at the Roosvelt Hotel, marking the first high-level contact between the two sides since the prime ministers of the two countries met at Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, in July.

Brazil seeks closer trade ties with Iran

Pittsburgh, September 27: Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said his country wants increased trade relations and dialogue with Iran, despite confirmation that Tehran has built a second nuclear-enrichment plant.

“Brazil has good trade relations with Iran and we want to strengthen them,” Lula told a press conference after the G-20 summit.

The president said he will receive Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as scheduled Nov 23 and plans Iran next year.

Mahato arrested, Maoists call nationwide shutdown Oct 3

Lalgarh, Septemebr 26: Tribal leader Chhattradhar Mahato, chief of a Maoist-backed group at the forefront of a violent agitation in this trouble-torn belt of West Bengal, was arrested Saturday.

Mahato, leader of the People’s Committee Against Police Atrocities (PCAPA), was nabbed from Birkara near the headquarters of Lalgarh block of West Midnapur district, Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Surajit Kar Purkayastha told IANS.

Following his arrest, the Maoists called for a nationwide shutdown Oct 3.

Communal tension in Faizabad-Ayodhya defused, police on alert

Lucknow, September 26: Communal tension in the twin towns of Faizabad-Ayodhya over the location of two Durga Puja marquees and a religious procession was defused Saturday, a police official said, but the Uttar Pradesh administration remained on alert.

Uprooting of Durga Puja pandals at two sites in Faizabad, where there is no history of such events, led to tension over the past 24 hours, police said. Organisers maintained they were armed with a high court order granting them permission to put up a puja at those particular sites.

Nominations of 432 rejected during scrutiny in Haryana

Chandigarh, September 26: The nomination papers of 432 candidates, mostly Independents, were rejected while those of 1433 were found in order after scrutiny of papers today for the October 13 Haryana Assembly elections.

The maximum nominations rejected were 13 from Fatehabad followed by 11 in Kalanaur (SC) and 10 in Punhana assembly segment.

From Kalanur (SC) in Rohtak, the candidature of BSP’s Ajmer Singh and his covering candidate Mahavir Narwal was rejected on technical grounds.

2 die as vehicle gets swept away, 4 missing

Aizawl, September 26: Two persons died while four others were missing when when a pickup van was swept away by flash flood near Mutthi village, about 20 kilometres from here, last night.

Police said ten people were inside the multi-utility vehicle when it got washed away in swirling waters.

While two bodies have been recovered, search was on for four missing persons.

Four other occupants swam ashore to safety.

Dalit girl dies, sister alleges jilted lover killed her

Khandwa, September 26: A dalit minor today died under mysterious cicumstances, amid allegations from her family members that she was burnt by her jilted lover and his friend under Kotwali police station here.

After the incident, the minor girl Deepmala’s elder sister Durgabai alleged that her sister’s lover Ashish Akode of Amravati in Maharashtra along with his friend Mohan barged into their home and after pouring kerosene, set Deepmala on fire.

At the time of the incident, Durgabai said that she was in the neighbourhood.
