Sri Lanka vows anew to resettle displaced Tamils quickly

Colombo, September 28: Sri Lanka’s prime minister vowed anew in United Nations that Colombo would quickly resettle civilians still in state-run camps after being displaced by the government rout of Tamil separatists.

Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka told the UN General Assembly on Saturday that a key priority for his government was to meet the immediate humanitarian needs of the roughly 290,000 Tamil civilians who “were liberated from the decades-long hold” of the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu get prize for love and forgiveness

Vancouver, September 2: The Dalai Lama joined Bishop Desmond Tutu, eBay founder Pierre Omidyan, “Power of Now” author Eckhart Tolle, Nobel laureates and other spiritual leaders here to call for change in the world through compassion.

The Tibetan spiritual leader, who is here to lead the Vancouver Peace Summit, and Bishop Tutu were jointly given the Fetzer Prize for Love and Forgiveness. The award has been instituted by Michigan’s Fetzer Institute to honour those who are working for peace in the world.

Balco mishap probe: ‘Stay’ order for 89 Chinese

Chhattisgarh, September 28: The Centre has decided to restrain 89 Chinese nationals from leaving the country after the Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (Balco) thermal power plant incident, which left 41 workers dead.

The Chinese workers, who have been restrained from leaving India, are employed at the Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (Balco) thermal power plant at Korba in Chhattisgarh where an under-construction chimney collapsed, leading to these casualties on Wednesday. The death toll may rise further as the debris at the site is yet to be fully cleared.

Merkel secures victory in German elections

Berlin, September 28: German Chancellor Angela Merkel secured victory Sunday at the head of a new centre-right coalition she said was needed “to move our country forwards.”

“We’ve achieved our goal of forming a new government,” she said after her Christian Democrats (CDU) and their preferred allies won a safe parliamentary majority in federal elections, television projections of partial vote counts showed.

Half-man & half-goat born in South Africa

Melbourne, September 28: An African village is reportedly shellshocked after the birth of a bizarre faun-like creature said to have the combined features of a man and a goat.

Bild reports the creature, which died just a few hours after birth in Lower Gweru, Zimbabwe, had a huge head and face which resembled a human, as well as goat legs and a tail.

Villagers said the end product was so scary even dogs were afraid to go close to it. They burned the corpse fearing it was an evil sign.

“This is indeed a miracle that has never been witnessed anywhere,” elder Themba Moyo said.

Air India strike enters third day, 11 flights from Delhi cancelled

New Delhi, September 28: A strike called by Air India pilots entered its third day Monday, resulting in cancellations of over 11 flights alone from Delhi, an official said.

Despite the Air India management agreeing to look into the grievances, particularly the productivity-linked incentives (PLI) of the pilots, the adamant pilots said they would continue their strike until the management agreed to also pay the three-months arrears.

U.S. commander offers troop options for Afghanistan

Washington, September 28: The commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan planned to offer options for policymakers to try to stem Taliban gains, including sending up to 30,000 to 40,000 additional combat troops and trainers, according to defense and congressional officials.

Air India sets up Panel to look into Pilots’ Grievances

Mumbai, September 28: Offering olive branch to the striking pilots, Air India management on Sunday agreed to set up a committee to look into their concernsin Mumbai over the cut in their Productivity-Linked Incentives (PLIs).

“The committee, comprising Executive Director (Finance), Executive Director (Industrial Relations), General Manager (Operations in Mumbai) and representatives of the executive pilots, would address the concerns of the agitating executive pilots over the cut in the PLIs,” Air India Spokesperson Jitendra Bhargava told reporters.

Philippines struggles to help flood victims

Manila, September 28: Philippine authorities on Monday were struggling to help hundreds of thousands of people displaced by massive floods in the capital and outlying areas brought about by storm Ketsana.

Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro said the government has shifted from search and rescue operations to relief work as the death toll in the deluge has been steadily rising.

“Right now, we will concentrate really on providing food and other necessities,” he said.

Krishna, Qureshi hold talks, discuss progress in Mumbai probe

New York, September 28: External Affairs Minister S M Krishna on Sunday met his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mahmood Qureshi in New York with the progress in the investigations in Pakistan into the Mumbai being the “focal point” of their talks.

Krishna met Qureshi at the New York Palace hotel on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in the first highest-level contact between the countries since their Prime Ministers met at the Egyptian city of Sharm El-Sheikh in July.

Chinese PM to visit North Korea amid nuclear standoff

Seoul, September 28: China’s prime minister will visit North Korea early next week for a trip that could help revive talks stalled for nearly a year on ending Pyongyang’s nuclear ambitions.

Analysts said China, the closest thing that destitute North Korea has for a major ally, would not be sending such a high profile visitor unless it has won some assurance from Pyongyang that could ease tension over the nuclear standoff.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao “will pay an official goodwill visit” to North Korea from October 4 to 6, the KCNA news agency said in a one sentence dispatch on Monday.

China, Japan, SKorea foreign ministers to meet

Shanghai, September 28: Foreign ministers from China, Japan and South Korea were to meet in Shanghai Monday to discuss the North Korea nuclear issue and a Japanese proposal for a European Union-style East Asian community.

The ministers were also due to prepare for an October 10 summit in Beijing, likely to bring together Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, officials said.

Three police officers arrested in Jammu

Srinagar, September 28: A special investigation team (SIT) has arrested three police officials including former Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manohar Singh for allegedly tampering with a murder weapon of a political leader’s son in Jammu, an official said Monday.
The arrests were made late Sunday night.

Amandeep Singh was shot dead at his home in Shashtri Nagar locality here Aug 29 by Jatinder Singh alias Raja, son of an influential businessman. Amandeep’s mother Deepinder Kaur was an eyewitness to the murder of her son.

Iran test fires missiles amid flap over nukes

Tehran, September 28: Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard said it successfully test-fired short-range missiles Sunday in drills meant to show Tehran is prepared to crush any military threat from another country.

The display of force comes days after the U.S. and its allies warned Iran over a newly revealed nuclear facility it was secretly constructing.

Gen. Hossein Salami, head of the Revolutionary Guard Air Force, said Iran had perfected its short range missiles to make them more accurate in tactical battlefield situations and defend the country from any attacks.
