14 members of family sentenced to life for murder

Patiala, September 01: Fourteen members of a family have been sentenced to life by a local court here for murdering a man over property dispute at Duggal village in the district. Additional Sessions Judge P P Singh pronounced the sentence yesterday against Labh Singh and his family members for murdering Sher Singh on July 1, 2006.

Led by Labh, a group of men armed with guns and sharp edged weapons had attacked Sher and two others — Rai Singh and Sarovar Singh — on the fateful day when they were working in fields. Rai and Sarovar were critically injured in the attack while Sher had died.

RSS chief Bhagwat to visit Gujarat next week

Ahmedabad, September 01: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat would be on a two-day tour of Gujarat from Sep 6 to meet senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Sangh Parivar leaders of the state.

Bhagwat would first meet senior RSS leaders and later call on BJP leaders, including Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi Sep 7 in state capital Gandhinagar, a top BJP functionary here said.

14 people missing in landslide in eastern Nepal

Kathmandu, September 01: At least 14 people were missing and presumed dead after a landslide hit a remote village in western Nepal, police said Tuesday.

The landslide hit the village of Jaleswor in Khotang district, about 120 kilometres east of the Nepalese capital Kathmandu, early Tuesday.

The victims were sleeping when their homes were swept away by falling mud, rock and other debris, police said.

Rescue teams were scouring the area but had not found any trace of the victims, district police in Khotang said.

Zimbabwe government demands 50 per cent of all diamond investment

Harare, September 01: Zimbabwe’s government is demanding 50 per cent of all investments in the country’s diamond wealth, local media reported Tuesday.

“With diamonds, we want 50-50 per cent shareholding in joint ventures with investors,” Mines Minister Obert Mpofu was quoted by the state-controlled Herald newspaper as telling a parliamentary committee on mining. “That’s not negotiable.”

Mpofu said the government was drafting legislation to put its stake into law.

Soldier killed in cross LoC firing

Jammu, September 01: An Indian Army soldier was killed in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district on Tuesday when Pakistani troops fired from across the Line of Control (LoC), Army officials here said.

In what is being termed as “another case of ceasefire violation”, a senior Army official said the firing came from across the LoC, which divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan, in Mendhar sector, about 230 km from here, in the early hours of the morning.

SC notice to Gujarat govt over Jaswant book ban

New Delhi, September 01: Supreme Court on Tuesday issued a notice to Gujarat government on a petition filed by Jaswant Singh challenging banning on his book on Pakistan founder Md Ali Jinnah.

A bench of Justice Altmas Kabir and Justice Cyriac Joseph while issuing the notice to the Gujarat government decided to hear Singh’s lawsuit Sep 8.

The apex court has asked the Gujarat government to explain the basis on which it imposed the ban.

The Gujarat government had banned Jaswant Singh’s controversial book on Jinnah alleging it defamed former Home Minister of India Sardar Patel.

Won’t quit as PAC chief: Jaswant Singh

New Delhi, September 01: A defiant Jaswant Singh on Tuesday said he would not quit as chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, a day after the expelled BJP leader was told by his former party to quit the parliamentary post.

Asked by reporters if he would oblige the BJP by quitting the PAC, Jaswant Singh said he would not.

“The decision (to ask him to quit the PAC) is of the (Lok Sabha) Speaker, and not of a political party,” he said.

Lt Gen PC Bhardwaj to be next Army Vice Chief

New Delhi, September 01: Northern Commander Lt Gen PC Bhardwaj has been named the next Vice Chief of Army, bypassing seniormost three-star officer Lt Gen VK Singh.

Bhardwaj will assume office on October 1 when the incumbent Lt Gen Noble Thamburaj retires.

The appointment of Lt Gen Bhardwaj comes after Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor had recommended to the Defence Ministry that an officer with around two years of service left with him should take over the office so that he can get a grip of things and continue for a longer tenure.

One more death due to swine flu in Gujarat

Ahmedabad, September 01: A 40-year-old man died of swine flu here Tuesday, taking the toll in the viral infection in Gujarat to nine.

Principal Secretary, Health, Ravi Saxena, said the patient Dinesh Agera was first admitted to a private hospital on August 30 and the following day, he tested positive for the virus.

“Subsequently, he was shifted from the private hospital to the municipal-run VS hospital last night and today morning he succumbed to viral infection,” Saxena said.

So far, 113 people have tested positive for the virus in Gujarat.

Britain to release documents on Lockerbie bomber

London, September 01: Britain will publish all “relevant” correspondence with Scotland on the Lockerbie bomber, an official said, amid suggestions oil deals with Libya played a role in his release.

London will publish Tuesday its communication with Scottish ministers over Abdelbaset Ali Mohmet al-Megrahi, whose release from prison earlier this month sparked outrage in the United States, a Downing Street spokeswoman said.

“We will release all relevant documents with Scottish ministers,” the spokeswoman told AFP, declining to give details.

N Korea lifts curbs on border with South Korea

Seoul, September 01: North Korea Tuesday lifted tough restrictions on cross-border traffic with South Korea, the government here said, its latest apparent goodwill gesture after months of hostility.

As of Tuesday the North was allowing 12 northbound crossings and 11 return trips a day, the unification ministry said, compared to just three daily crossings each way under curbs imposed last December.

Dalai Lama leads mass prayers as China metes out punishment

White House blasts Cheney in interrogation feud

Washington, September 01: The White House has dismissed former vice-president Dick Cheney’s attacks on a probe into alleged CIA abuses of “war on terrorism” detainees and sharply questioned his foreign policy judgement.

Tribal violence kills 46 people in south Sudan: UN

Khartoum, September 01: Tribesmen trying to steal cattle attacked a village in southern Sudan, sparking a conflict that killed 46 people, including seven soldiers, the UN has said.

The incident was the latest in a rising wave of tribal violence in the south that has killed more than 2,000 people, including many women and children, and displaced another 250,000, according to the UN.

Iran’s new legal chief urges release of protesters

Tehran, September 01: Iran’s new judiciary chief has called for the swift release of some protesters jailed in the aftermath of the June presidential election, newspapers Tuesday quoted a prominent MP as saying.

“Ayatollah (Sadeq) Larijani said it is necessary to release immediately a group of detainees,” said Kazem Jalali, who is the spokesman of a parliamentary panel set up to look into unrest that followed the disputed poll.

Delhi to banish beggars ahead of Commonwealth Games

New Delhi, September 01: The Indian capital will be made beggar free in the run up to next year’s Commonwealth Games, the authorities said Tuesday while launching two mobile courts to prosecute beggars.

To begin with, citizens who spot beggars can reach the mobile courts through a control room. The courts will reach the spot and take away the beggars, Delhi Social Welfare Minister Mangat Ram Singhal said here.

BJP internal war won’t affect Maharashtra prospects: Shiv Sena

Mumbai, September 01:The Shiv Sena Tuesday said the factionalism in the Bharatiya Janata Party, its alliance partner, would not effect the performance of the coalition in the Maharashtra assembly elections.

“The factionalism in the BJP would have no impact on our prospects in Maharashtra,” Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut told IANS.

Raut said since “Shiv Sena is the bigger party in the coalition (in that state), the BJP’s internal politics would not hamper our prospects.”

He said the seat sharing formula with the BJP for the 288 assembly seats in the state has been finalised.

Iraq death toll in August highest in 13 months: Officials

Baghdad, September 01: The month of August witnessed the highest number of deaths from violence in Iraq for 13 months, official figures showed Tuesday, with 456 people killed across the conflict-torn nation.

Statistics compiled by the defence, interior and health ministries showed that 393 civilians, 48 police and 15 soldiers were killed.

The figures marked the highest monthly death toll since July 2008, when a total of 465 people were killed.

August saw two massive truck bombings at the ministries of finance and foreign affairs in Baghdad that killed at least 95 people.

Japan conducts quake drills on 1923 quake memorial day

Tokyo, September 01: An estimated 795,000 people from Tokyo and 30 other prefectures took part in annual anti-earthquake drills conducted by the central and local governments Tuesday, the 86th anniversary of the 1923 killer quake, the Cabinet Office said.

The central government held the drill on the presumption that a quake with a magnitude of 7.3 and the maximum intensity of upper 6 on the Japanese seismic scale of 7 pounded the heavily populated Tokyo metropolitan area.

Pakistan building new nuke weapons: Report

New Delhi, September 01: In yet another confirmation of the expansion of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons program, a new report has revealed that the Islamabad is readying new nuclear facilities and weapons to go with it.

As per a media report, a top US nuclear scientists group has unearthed new evidence of Pakistan government’s continuing efforts to enhance its nuclear weapon stockpile.

Five militants killed, insurgents’ bases destroyed in Pak

Islamabad, September 01: At least five militants, including two top commanders, were killed and 12 others injured Tuesday by security forces in Pakistan’s restive Khyber tribal region bordering Afghanistan in an operation against a banned group during which three hideouts of insurgents were also destroyed.

The operation against Lashkar-e-Islam group was launched this morning after curfew was clamped in the region. The homes of several militant commanders and three hideouts were demolished by troops at Bara in Khyber Agency and 28 insurgents were also arrested.

12 injured as police cane charges protesting students

Srinagar, September 01: Twelve students were today injured after police resorted to cane charge as they tried to come out from their college and hold protests demanding setting up of a Central University here. A sweeper received severe injuries during the incident and has been hospitalised, official sources said.

Students of GGM Science College near Jewel Chowk boycotted their classes and held demonstrations on the college premises, the officials said. Thereafter, they tried to hold protests on the main road.

Pakistani nuclear scientist says restrictions lifted

Islamabad, September 01: Disgraced Pakistani nuclear scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan, who has admitted leaking nuclear secrets to Iran, North Korea and Libya, said Tuesday restrictions on his movements had been lifted.

Asked if local newspaper reports that the government restrictions had been removed were correct, Khan said, “By the grace of Allah, yes.”

In February, a Pakistani court declared Khan a free man, five years after the reputed father of Pakistan’s nuclear bomb was effectively put under house arrest for operating a proliferation network.

Govt to appoint regulator for coal sector soon

New Delhi, September 01: The coal sector will soon get a regulator of its own, like the ones for insurance and telecom, to oversee key issues such as price for long-term fuel supply and e-auctioning.

“A cabinet note for appointment of a coal regulator has been approved by the Ministry of Coal…It is planned to send the same to Cabinet along with concerned Bill, which will then, after approval, be introduced in Parliament shortly,” a Planning Commission presentation before the full Plan panel chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said.
