Skoda’s August sales up 33 percent

New Delhi, September 01: Skoda Auto India Tuesday reported sales of 1,463 units in August as against 1,103 units in the like month last year, reflecting a year-on-year growth of 33 percent.

According to the company, its Skoda Octavia and the New Skoda Laura proved to be the hottest selling cars in the high-end C+ segment with sales figure of 627 units in August 2009.

The C+ segment in India comprises cars such as the Honda Civic, Toyota Altis, Chevrolet Optra, Volkswagen Jetta and Mitsubishi Cedia, apart from Skoda Octavia and Skoda Laura.

Air Marshal K J Mathews appointed head of HR in IAF

New Delhi, September 01: Air Marshal K J Mathews, an experienced fighter pilot and former member of the acclaimed Thunderbolts aerobatic team, today took over as the new head of human resources in the Indian Air Force Headquarters here, an official release said.

Air Marshal Mathews took over as the Air Officer-in-Charge Personnel (AOP) in place of Air Marshal S Mukherji, who is now the new Southern Air Command chief.

Carbon monoxide increases health risk to elderly heart patients

Washington, September 01: Exposure to carbon monoxide (CO), even well below permissible national limits, may hasten hospitalisation of elderly cardiac patients, according to a new study in the US.

The nationwide study of 126 urban communities found that an increase in CO of one part per million (PPM) in the maximum daily hour-long exposure is linked with a 0.96 percent hike in hospitalisation risk from cardiovascular disease among people over 65 year.

Four men wanted for 211 murders arrested in Mexico

Ciudad Juarez (Mexico), September 01: Four men suspected of committing 211 murders in northern Mexico have been arrested, authorities said.

The killings occurred in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico’s most violent city, where the Juarez and Sinaloa drug cartels have been waging a turf war.

Cristian Enrique Franco Franco, 22, charged with killing 16 people, Edgar Flores Martinez, 30, who faces 87 murder counts, and Omar Castro Rivera, 28, who is suspected of killing 93 people, were arrested by the security forces.

Punjab farmers’ loss Rs.62,000 crore in 40 years: Report

Chandigarh, September 01: The non-linking of the minimum support price (MSP) for wheat and paddy with the wholesale price index (WPI) has led to a cumulative notional loss of nearly Rs.62,000 crore for farmers in Punjab over the past four decades, a report to the state government says.
The report of the committee on MSP and price index, set up by the Punjab government, was submitted to Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal Tuesday.

San Francisco, September 01: The man accused of abducting and sexually abusing Jaycee Lee Dugard testified during a previous kidnapping and rape case that he prowled through residential neighborhoods as a Peeping Tom and had strong rape desires.

During his 1977 kidnapping trial, Phillip Garrido also said he leered at girls as young as seven and 10, and he admitted to exposing himself to some of them.

China wants stability at Myanmar border

Beijing, September 01: China Tuesday urged the Myanmar junta to restore “order and stability” at their border following unrest that triggered mass exodus of Myanmarese into the Communist country.

“Safeguarding the stability of the China-Myanmar border is in line with the vital interests of both governments,” said Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu.

BJP to chalk out assembly poll strategy Friday

New Delhi, September 01: The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) central election committee will meet here Friday to chalk out a strategy for the assembly elections in Maharashtra, Haryana and Arunachal Pradesh.

BJP leader M. Venkaiah Naidu made the announcement after a meeting of party colleagues including president Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj.

The three Congress-ruled states go to polls Oct 13 and the votes will be counted Oct 22. It will be the first electoral battle since the Congress retained power in the Lok Sabha elections of April-May.

Taipei, September 01: Four members of former Taiwan president Chen Shui-bian’s family were sentenced on corruption charges Tuesday but Chen himself is not scheduled to be sentenced until next week.

The Taipei district court sentenced ex-first lady Wu Shu-chen to one year in prison and the other three family members were given reduced sentences because they admitted their wrongdoing.

Man killed by uprooted tree

Orissa, September 01: One person was killed after a tree fell on him at Gokarnapur under Digapahandi police station in Orissa’s Ganjam district today, police said.

The 52-year-old man S Aauntulu Dora was going to his farm land during heavy rain when an uprooted tree crushed him underneath.

Police and local people retrieved the body and post-mortam was conducted at the government hospital at Digapahandi, they said.

IAEA report positive, Western charges political, says Iran

Tehran, September 01: Iran’s nuclear chief Ali-Akbar Salehi termed the latest report by the UN nuclear watchdog as positive and rejected continued Western charges over a possible nuclear weapons programme as politically motivated, state media reported Tuesday.
Salehi told the Al-Alam news network that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report was a “big achievement” for Iran containing many positive points, including the non-diversion of nuclear material in Iran’s peaceful nuclear projects.

New Delhi, September 01: CBI today filed a chargesheet in a court here against 17 persons accusing them of fraudulently withdrawing Rs 14.55 crore from various banks in Uttar Pradesh (UP) by en-cashing 15 forged cheques of North Eastern Railways.

Additional Sessions Judge O P Saini took the chargehseet into the records and fixed the matter on September seven for taking its congnizance.

91 Goa mines under government scanner

Panaji, September 01: Ninety-one out of the 103 operators of leased mines in Goa are under the government scanner for possible violation of environmental norms, a senior official said Tuesday.

Of these, 78 operators had been issued notices to submit official documentation and details of clearances submitted to the environment and forest ministry, said Goa State Pollution Control Board chairman Simon de Souza.

Union Bank cuts foreign currency deposit rates

Mumbai, September 01: Public-sector lender, Union Bank of India (UBI) today cut interest rates on foregin currency non-resident (bank) account deposits and non resident external rupee term deposits with immediate effect.

With this, US Dollar deposits having a maturity of 1-2 years will now attract an interest rate of 2.33 per cent (2.50 per cent), a press release said.

Deposits in 2-3 years and 3-4 years maturity bucket will now attract 2.35 per cent (2.56 per cent) and 2.99 per cent (3.17 per cent) respectively, the release said.

Christian Audigier buys Nicolas Cage’s home

London, September 01: Hollywood actor Nicolas Cage’s famous Bel Air property in Los Angeles has been purchased by fashion designer Christian Audigier.

Cage’s mansion has been in the market for sale since 2007. The actor slashed the asking price by half early this year in a bid to offload the property, reported contactmusic.com.

It is not known exactly what Audigier paid for the house.

“I believe it was a one-to-one deal. Christian knows Nicolas and they did the deal between themselves,” said a source.
