Ajmal isn’t the only notorious Kasab from Pakistan

Islamabad, September 28: Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone surviving Mumbai attacker who is currently being tried by an Indian anti-terror court, isn’t the only notorious Kasab from Pakistan.

There have been at least two other Kasabs, all “religious crackpots”, according to a leading columnist.

“What’s with this name, Kasab (sometimes also spelled with a Q)? There have been three (in) famous Kasabs in Pakistan – and all of them religious crackpots!” Nadeem F Paracha wrote in a daily.

Militants kill six truck drivers in Afghanistan

Kabul, September 28: Taliban militants have attacked a convoy of trucks in Afghanistan’s eastern Kunar province, killing six drivers, the interior ministry said in a statement Monday.

“Enemies of Afghanistan attacked a convoy, set fire to six trucks and killed the drivers in Marawora district Sunday,” the statement said. One of the drivers was kidnapped by the rebels, it added.

The police have launched an investigation.

Mumbai, September 28: Abbas Tyrewala has voluntarily called a halt to the shooting of his 1-800-LOVE at Mehboob Studios from September 26.

Evidently Abbas was unhappy with the result of the shooting and gave his cast and crew a break to allow them to take a breather after the hectic shooting schedule in London.

It seems after the hit of WANTED, Boney is again basking on Salman’s popularity by continuing their bond with the sequel. Though part one could not get its shares on the box office collection but the producer is sure that the sequel will do the needful.

12-year-old girl first swine flu victim in Chandigarh

Chandigarh, September 28: A 12-year-old girl died from influenza A (H1N1) virus Monday, becoming the first swine flu casualty here, a health official said.

The victim, a native of Meerut in Uttar pradesh, was staying in the hostel of Chaman Vatika school on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway, 35 km from here.

“Harshita was brought to Chandigarh on Friday in a very serious condition and she was admitted at Chaitanya Hospital. When the hospital authorities informed us, she was already on ventilator support,” H.C. Gera, nodal officer for swine flu, Chandigarh, told IANS.

Subhash Ghai is on 2009 International Emmy Award Jury

Mumbai, September 28: The International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, has invited filmmaker and educationist Subhash Ghai as a Juror in the final round of judging for the 2009 International Emmy Awards.

The nominees are the regional semi-finalists from each of the four (4) Emmy judging regions (Europe, Latin America, English-Language and Asia/Africa/Middle-East). And will be voted as winners on 26th October 2009.

He has also been invited as a juror to attend The 37th International Emmy Awards Gala, which will take place on Monday, November 23, 2009 in New York City.

Brave family kills militant, injures another in Jammu

Srinagar, September 28: Displaying bravery, members of a family killed a militant, injured another and seized two AK rifles from them during a scuffle at their home in Shahdra Sharief area here, police said on Monday.

Three armed militants barged into the house of Noor Ahmed in Rajouri district, about 195-kms from here, at around 21:30 hours yesterday, Senior Superintendent of Police Shafkat Wattali said.

Policemen abducted by Maoists in West Bengal released

Kolkata, September 28: Two policemen abducted by the Maoists in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district were released late Sunday, police said Monday.

“Two constables – Sisirkanti Nag and Siteswar Prasad Singh – were released last ((Sunday) night near Jamtalgore police camp. They are in good health,” West Midnapore Superintendent of Police M.K Verma told IANS.

Both policemen were abducted from Maoist-infested Belpahari region, about 50 km from troubled Lalgarh, late Saturday night.

Akshay turns down Kunal Kohli

Mumbai, September 28: Just when Kunal Kohli thought that the male lead of his untitled forthcoming romantic comedy had been finalised, he has been left in the lurch. Akshay Kumar, who had earlier agreed to do his film, has backed out. Buzz is that the star was unhappy with Kunal shouting from the rooftops about him doing the film.

A source says, “Akshay was livid when he heard that Kunal had told his close aides and even some sections of the media that he had found the male lead. Kunal got carried away when Akshay showed interest in the subject in their initial talks.”

Two held with Rs.8.5 lakh in fake currency

Lucknow, September 28: Two people were arrested Monday in Itawah district of Uttar Pradesh with Rs.8.5 lakh in fake currency, police said.

Akhilesh Rajpoot and Kalka Prasad were nabbed by the Special Operations Group (SOG) from Bakeshwar locality of Itawah.

“We arrested them and recovered fake currency of denominations Rs.500, Rs.100 and Rs.50. Also, some half-printed notes were recovered,” SOG team inspector J.S. Parihar told IANS.

Sena-BJP manifesto promises quota in jobs, stable prices

Mumbai, September 28: A separate ministry for welfare of nomadic tribes, 15 per cent quota in jobs and educational institutions for economically backward classes and stabilising prices have been promised in the manifesto of Shiv Sena-BJP alliance for the October 13 Maharashtra Assembly elections.

The manifesto or vachan nama was released by Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray in the presence of senior BJP leaders Gopinath Munde and Nitin Gadkari at Shiv Sena Bhavan in central Mumbai on Monday.

Manila floods leave 337,000 people homeless

Philippines, September 28: At least 73 people were killed and more than 330,000 others displaced after the heaviest rain in more than four decades plunged the Philippine capital into chaos, officials said today.

The nine-hour deluge across Manila submerged houses, washed away shanties and turned roads into raging rivers on Saturday, forcing terrified residents to seek refuge on top of homes or cars, where they waited for more than 24 hours.

Samples collected after exhumation of Shopian victims

Srinagar, September 28: The bodies of the two south Kashmir women who were raped and murdered in Shopian town earlier this year were exhumed Monday to gather forensic evidence, an official said.

Forensic experts from New Delhi who arrived here Sunday proceeded to south Kashmir’s Shopian town early Monday for the exhumation.

The graveyard where the victims had been buried was cordoned off by security forces before the exhumation process was started.

26th International Population Congress opens in Morocco

Marrakech, September 28: The 26th International Population Congress has opened here to discuss population related problems, migration and the economic crisis, among others.

Over 2,000 demographers from 114 countries attended the five-day meeting that started Sunday to discuss more than 200 topics, including population and global climate change, migration, economic crisis, the imbalance of fertility rate and social security system.

The global conference is sponsored and organised by the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population and the Moroccan government.

Five killed in Pakistan blast

Islamabad, September 28: Five people were killed Monday in car bomb attack near a police checkpoint in northwest Pakistan, a TV report said.
The attacker rammed his explosives-laden vehicle into the car of former Taliban commander Maulana Abdul Hakim in the Bannu area in North West Frontier Province, Express TV channel reported.

Abdul Hakim had joined a peace committee to support the government against the militants.

Five people, including Hakim, were killed in the attack.

A woman was also injured in the blast.

Four Maoists killed in Jharkhand

Ranchi, September 28: Four guerrillas were killed by members of another Maoist group in Gumla district of Jharkhand Monday, police said.
A gun battle between two groups of Maoist rebels took place at Salkaya jungle of Gumla, about 160 km from here. “In the clash, four Maoist rebels were killed,” a police officer told IANS.

People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI) commander Jayram Gope alias Bhvaniji was among those killed. One rifle and live cartridges were seized from the killed rebels.

London, September 28: Hollywood actress Megan Fox has invested in an electronic reading device to scan through movie scripts because she doesn’t like touching dry paper.
