Sea level may rise 1m+ by 2100

Geneva, September 02: The world’s seas could rise by more than a metre by 2100 as the melting Arctic has an impact on weather across the planet, the environmental group WWW said in a report on Wednesday.

That projection, roughly twice the sea-level rise cited in U.N. and other research, takes account of the impact of disappearing ice sheets of Greenland and western Antarctica.

Sharply higher seas could also lead to flooding of coastal regions, potentially affecting about a quarter of the world’s population, the WWF said.

Green CSIR earns silver status

Pretoria, September 02: The CSIR International Convention Centre (CSIRICC) in Pretoria has been awarded a silver classification for its efforts towards greener operations, the Heritage Environmental Management Company said on Wednesday.

“The CSIRICC’s commitment to addressing its impacts can clearly be seen in the enthusiasm with which the convention centre is applying more environmentally friendly operating practices,” said Heritage director Neal Dickson.

Alleged pension robber killed

Durban, September 02: A man suspected of having robbed officials of the SA Social Security Agency of a huge sum of money at the pension pay point in Nkandla was shot dead by police, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Wednesday.

Spokesperson Mbongiseni Mdlalose said: “Philani Nzuza, 30, was killed by the police on Tuesday. He was wanted for four murder cases and three for robbery. Police believed he was involved in the pension pay point robbery in Nkandla.”

Hyundai Santro sports new look

New Delhi, September 02: Hyundai Motor India, the country’s second largest car manufacturer on Wednesday introduced a new model of its flagship brand Santro with improved exterior features and new luxurious interiors.

Trinamool leaders obstructing IT park project

Kolkata, September 02: A section of West Bengal’s main opposition Trinamool Congress was obstructing the proposed IT park project at Rajarhat here, Housing Development Minister Gautam Deb alleged on Wednesday.

“A few Trinamool leaders are trying to obstruct the project. I would like to request all our state leaders, including Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Trinamool chief and Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee, and union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee to come and start working together for the development of the state,” he said.

Scientists home in on dog’s birthplace and origin

London, September 02: Eastern Asia is believed to be the place where man tamed the wolf into becoming a dog. Now, researchers have succeeded in further narrowing the birthplace of man’s best friend.

“For the first time in history, it is now possible to provide a detailed picture of the dog, including birthplace, point in time and the number of wolves that were tamed,” says Peter Savolainen, a biology researcher at the Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan (KTH) or The Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden.

Robbers arrested

New Delhi, September 02: Two robbers were arrested here in separate cases and three stolen motorcycles and a car were recovered from them, police said today.

The arrested have been identified as Mukesh and Sikander.

Mukesh, allegedly involved in at least five cases of robbery, was caught on August 29 from Tuglaqabad while Sikander, said to be involved in 26 cases, was arrested the next day from Sector-9, Dwarka.

Sikander was declared a bad character of Palam by police earlier. He was previously involved in several cases of robbery, snatching and vehicle theft.

Senior cop arrested in Jharkhand

Ranchi, September 02: The Deputy Commissioner of Police of Sahebganj district of Jharkhand has been arrested for not appointing a peon as ordered by the court, police said Wednesday.

The Jharkhand High Court had Tuesday directed Sahebganj Superintendent of Police (SP) to arrest DCP K. Ravi Kumar on charges of contempt of court. Kumar was arrested Tuesday night. He will be produced in the court Wednesday.

14 of a family given life for murder

Chandigarh, September 02: A court in the Patiala city of Punjab has sentenced to life imprisonment 14 members of a family for killing a man over a land dispute in 2006.

Additional sessions judge P.P. Singh Monday convicted head of the family Kartar Singh, his two sons, four grandsons and seven other relatives for the murder of land owner Sher Singh.

Sony eyes 40 percent growth during festive season

Kolkata, September 02: Sony India is targeting 40 percent revenue growth in the country during the festive season.

“With a Rs.50 million (Rs.5 crore) investment, we intend to achieve 40 percent growth over last year and offer very competitive pricing to our customers during this festive season. The company is targeting a sales revenue of Rs.700 million,” said Sony India senior manager Vijay Singh Jaiswal.

The company also hopes to achieve 60 percent growth in West Bengal during the period.

Lawyer of don Abu Salem robbed of mobile phone

New Delhi, September 02: Arvind Shukla, a lawyer appearing for gangster Abu Salem, was Wednesday robbed of his mobile phone, police said.
According to police, Shukla was robbed of his mobile phone, which was in his car, at a traffic signal of Shastri Park in northeast Delhi.

“Shukla was on his way to court when he stopped the car at a traffic signal as a motorcyclist hit him from behind. When he turned to see what happened, a young boy allegedly took away his mobile which was lying in the front seat,” police said.

YSR’s missing chopper was not airworthy, says DGCA

New Delhi, September 02: Putting a question mark over worthiness of the AP CM’s chopper, DGCA today said YSR Reddy’s aircraft Bell 430 was not airworthy.

DGCA said that CM aircraft’s certificate of airworthiness has not been renewed for last two years.

The Bell 430 helicopter was not airworthy and was pulled out of the chief minister’s use last year after the state purchased a new Italian chopper, civil aviation sources said.

UAE, Canada to boost economic ties

Dubai, September 02: United Arab Emirates (UAE) Economy Minister Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansouri and Canadian Ambassador Sarah Hardetsky have discussed new initiatives to boost economic ties between the two countries, news agency reported.

The air traffic between Canada and the UAE is of particular interest to both nations, with UAE carriers Emirates and Etihad looking to boost frequency of flights.

Leh gets 30 KW micro hydel plant inaugurated

New Delhi, September 02: New and Renewable Energy Minister Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday inaugurated a 30 KW micro hydel plant in the Leh district of Jammu and Kashmir.

The minister, who also met with local administrative and army officials, discussed deployment of solar energy equipment and micro hydel units to replace diesel and kerosene in civil and army establishments.

Gunmen target Johannesburg’s BRT service

Johannesburg, September 02: Security has been beefed up in this South African city after two vehicles of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service were attacked, reported on Wednesday.

The BRT services were launched in the city two days ago amid a turf war between taxi operators and the authorities handling the public transport network.

The report said gunmen fired at two BRT buses from a minicab Tuesday evening before escaping. Two people, including a police officer, were wounded in the attack.

25 killed as strong quake jolts Indonesia

Jakarta, September 02: At least 25 people were killed and dozens injured on Wednesday when a 7.3-magnitude earthquake rocked Indonesia’s Java Island, officials said.

The quake was felt strongly in the capital Jakarta, shaking buildings and sending residents running out of their homes and high-rise office towers in panic.

A tsunami alert was cancelled about 45 minutes later after no giant waves materialised.

“The quake left large cracks in my apartment walls. I’m traumatised,” said Yuni Wahidah, who lives in an apartment building in central Jakarta.

Congress workers protest baton charge on Digvijay Singh

Bhopal, September 02: Congress workers held demonstrations in various places across Madhya Pradesh no Wednesday to protest the baton charge on All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Digvijay Singh.

Protests were held in Bhopal, Jabalpur, Indore and Guna among major cities.

The Madhya Pradesh police have registered a case against about 150 Congress workers, including Madhya Pradesh Youth Congress president Jeetu Patwari, for hindering official work.
