Ryder fined for breach of ICC Code of Conduct

Johanesburg, September 28: New Zealand’s Jesse Ryder was fined 15 per cent of his match fee after being found guilty of breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during his side’s Champions Trophy match against Sri Lanka at the Wanderers.

Ryder was found guilty of contravening Level 1.2 of ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials which relates to “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings” in a hearing convened by ICC Elite Panel Match Referee Javagal Srinath.

Pak court admits Saeed’s plea challenging cases against him

Lahore, September 28: A Pakistani court Monday admitted a petition filed by banned Jamaat-ud-Dawah chief Hafiz Mohammad Saeed challenging two cases registered against him by police under the Anti-Terrorism Act for inciting people to wage ‘jehad’.

After a preliminary hearing, a two-judge bench of the Lahore High Court issued notices to the federal and Punjab governments and police officials in connection with the two First Information Reports registered in Faisalabad against Saeed, who has been blamed by India for masterminding the Mumbai terror attacks.

Accidental gunshot kills RSS activist in Madhya Pradesh

Bhopal, September 28: A 50-year-old activist of the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) died here Monday after a gun went off accidentally, police said.

Naresh Motwani was cleaning the gun when it went off accidentally around 11 a.m. at Saraswati Vidhya Mandir in Kotra-Sultanabad locality here.

‘RSS takes out Path Sanchalan (parade) every year on Dussehra during which its cadre carries arms. Motwani was cleaning the gun for the same. He was supposed to take part in the parade,’ Superintendent of Police Jaideep Prasad told IANS.

Pitch invaders will be arrested – ICC

London, September 28: The ICC says it has reviewed and enhanced the security apparatus at the grounds hosting the Champions Trophy following the pitch invasion at the conclusion of the India-Pakistan match on Saturday. It also said any such acts in the future would lead to arrests and prosecution.

“A number of arrests were made and those people have been prosecuted,” an ICC spokesperson told the Hindustan Times. “Any spectator who invades the pitch can expect to be arrested, prosecuted and if found guilty, fined under current South African legislation.”

Johnson promises to bounce out India

Thailand wins praise for AIDS vaccine trial

Hong Kong, September 28: An experimental AIDS vaccine that appears to be the first to protect people was mired for years in deep controversy, and credit for its success must go to Thailand where the trial was conducted, experts said.

The trial was criticized by 22 prominent US scientists in 2004 because the vaccine was widely expected to have no effect.

The critics, including Dr Robert Gallo of the Institute of Human Virology in Baltimore, who helped discover the AIDS virus, signed a letter accusing the US government of wasting more than USD 100 million by funding it.

Clinton tries to distort fact about Iran N plant

Washington, September 28: In an attempt to distort facts, the US Secretary of State implies that Iran was not the first to make an announcement about its new nuclear plant.

“This latest incident concerning the facility at Qom would have been disclosed were it for peaceful purposes. There would have already been IAEA inspections,” Hillary Rodham Clinton said in a Sunday televised interview.

“The facility had only become known through our working with partners to discover it prior to the Iranian announcement” she added.

Iran deplores Germany’s support for terrorists

Tehran, September 28: As Iran and the major world powers prepare to hold talks about leading global issues, a top Iranian nuclear official has slammed Germany’s support for terrorists.

“We believe that common concerns of the international community about terrorism can be a topic for [bilateral] cooperation,” Der Spiegel quoted Saeed Jalili Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council as saying.

“Firstly, we must reach a common definition about terrorism. Following this, areas which are threatened by terrorism will be determined,” he added.

7 US-led troops slain in deadly Afghan weekend

Kabul, September 28: Seven NATO soldiers including four French troops have been killed across Afghanistan, marking yet another deadly weekend for the foreign forces there.

The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said in a statement on Sunday that three of its members were killed in southern Afghanistan during ‘enemy attacks’, while another three died in the east from ‘non-combat incidents’ in the past 24 hours.

On Saturday, two US soldiers were fatally wounded in separate incidents in southern Afghanistan and later died, ISAF said.

Jordan summons Israeli envoy over al-Aqsa

Jerusalem, September 28: Jordan’s foreign ministry has summoned the Israeli envoy to Amman to protest violation of the al-Aqsa Mosque by Israeli soldiers.

The Jordanian foreign ministry handed a strongly-worded protest to the Israeli charge d’affaires on Sunday, condemning the breaking into Jerusalem’s (Al-Quds) al-Aqsa Mosque by Israeli soldiers, the official Petra news agency reported.

Tehran, September 28: Iran says the sudden commotion over a nascent enrichment facility outside Tehran is a Western ploy to create high international tensions ahead of crucial nuclear talks.

Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani said Sunday that Western powers seek to make an issue out of Iran’s nuclear activities in order to “impose their will on the country during the upcoming negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 group.

UK Asians hiring contract killers in India: Report

London, September 28: Britons of Indian origin have been hiring contract killers in India to murder targets such as friends and family members during their visits to India, an investigation has revealed.

Nearly 100 such murders of British Asians are reported every year in India, a report by the BBC Asian network claimed. Most of such murders take place in Punjab, it added.

Iran test-fires long-range Shahab-3 missile

Tehran, September 28: The Islamic Republic of Iran has successfully tested lng range Shahab-3 and Sejil missiles in the third stage of a defense drill in a bid to bolster its defense capabilities, Press TV has learned.

The missiles were launched on Monday as part of an advanced military exercise named The Great Prophet IV which was carried out by the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC).

The optimized Shahab-3 has a range of 1,300 to 2,000 kilometers.

The Sejil is a two-stage missile powered by solid fuel which was tested by the IRGC for the first time in the maneuver.

Erdogan: Focus on Israeli nukes not Iran N energy program

Ankara, September 28: The Turkish president has condemned Western countries’ focus on Iran’s nuclear program, stressing that the world should deal with Israel’s nuclear weapons instead.

Turkey’s “Radikal” newspaper on Sunday reported that Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s strong comments against Israel’s nuclear program was similar to his “one minute” stance in Davos in January when he walked out of a televised debate with his Israeli counterpart Shimon Peres.

Erdogan told reporters in New York that Iran’s nuclear program is not aimed at “military ends”.

Palestinian factions warn of new Intifada

Gaza, September 28: Several Palestinian factions, including the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) and the Hamas resistance movement have warned of a new Intifada, or uprising.

The warning by the Palestinian groups came after Israeli police beat up Palestinian Muslim worshippers in al-Quds on Sunday. The Israeli police had accompanied a radical Jewish group.

The Jewish group tried to break into the yard of the al-Haram al-Sharif, where the Muslims first Shrine, the al-Aqsa mosque is, in the eastern part of al-Quds.

Honduras threatens Brazil, calls for media regulation

Venenzuela, September 28: After giving an ultimatum to Brazil’s embassy over ousted president Manuel Zelaya, the Honduran interim government has called for media regulations and a ban on protests.

On Sunday, the interim government of Honduras, headed by Roberto Micheletti, threatened to shut down the embassy of Brazil within 10 days if it refuses to hand over Zelaya.

The ousted president has taken refuge at the embassy after sneaking back to Honduras last week. He was removed from power through a military coup in June.

Kurdistan suspected assassination perpetrators seized

Tehran, September 28: Iran’s Intelligence Ministry has identified and arrested some of the main suspected perpetrators of the recent series of assassinations in the western province of Kurdistan.

According to the ministry, two of the terrorists were killed and some of them were arrested in an operation carried out on Sunday, the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported.

“The terrorists, extremists linked to some foreign services, had been ordered to carry out a mission to divide Sunni and Shia brothers,” the report said.

Meshaal arrives in Cairo for talks

Cairo, September 28: Khaled Meshaal the exiled leader of Palestinian resistance movement Hamas, has arrived in Egypt for fresh talks on Palestinian unity, an airport official says.

On Sunday, a delegation of Hamas leaders headed by Meshaal arrived in Egypt via the Rafah crossing from Gaza, AFP quoted a Cairo airport spokesman as saying.

Damascus-based Meshaal will meet Egyptian intelligence chief Omar Suleiman and “give an answer to Egypt’s written proposals on reconciliation with Fatah,” senior Hamas member Sami Abu Zuhri had said on Thursday.

Congo eager to open embassy in Iran

Tehran, September 28: Congolese Minister of Foreign Affairs Basile Ikouebe has expressed willingness to open his country’s embassy in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Ikouebe made the remark in a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Manouchehr Mottaki on the sidelines of the 64th United Nations General Assembly at the UN headquarters in New York on Sunday.

Gates denies rift among US officials over Afghan war

Kabul, September 28: US Defense Secretary Robert Gates has played down any split between the US military and civilian leaders over the handling of the war in Afghanistan.

“I don’t think that’s the case at all,” he told ABC television in an interview on Sunday.

The comments come following Monday’s proposals by General McChrystal, a top US general in Afghanistan, warning that the US-led mission will “likely result in failure” unless more troops are deployed across the war-ravaged country.
