Lucknow, September 04: The Madhya Pradesh kho-kho secretary and coach M.S. Bhatt was found dead in his hotel room in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia district late Thursday night. The police said he was suffering from diabetes and have ruled out foul play.

The Madhya Pradesh team is in Ballia to participate in the 43rd Senior National Kho-Kho Championship and is staying in the Ashoka Hotel owned by a Congress leader Bachcha Pathak.

London, September 04: A vintage train carrying Holocaust survivors pulled into London on Friday, ending a three-day trip across Europe that marked the 70th anniversary of their extraordinary rescue by a young British stockbroker.

Waiting to greet them at London’s Liverpool Street Station was Nicholas Winton, age 100, who organized the rail “kindertransports” that carried hundreds of mostly Jewish children from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia to safety in 1939.

The steam train carried 170 people, including about two dozen survivors of the evacuations and members of their families.

Unidentified man’s body found in Delhi

New Delhi, September 04: The body of an unidentified man, aged about 23 years, was found hanging at a basketball court in Chanakyapuri here Friday, police said.

“We received a call around 7 in the morning that a body has been found hanging at a basketball court near the Bangladesh embassy,” a senior police officer said.

Police suspect it to be a case of suicide.

Surya to set up two more pipe units

Shimla, September 04: Surya Roshni, the largest exporter of GI pipes and flagship company of Surya Lights, Friday announced it is setting up two more units with an outlay of Rs.550 crore.

“We are setting up two pipe manufacturing units, one each in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, with an outlay of Rs.550 crore,” J.P. Agarwal, chairman and managing director of Surya Roshni, told IANS here.

He was here to launch a consumer awareness campaign, which would cover 250 cities, to educate consumers about the benefits of GI pipes and hazards of using spurious pipes.

Evidence in Aarushi murder case tampered with

New Delhi, September 04: The vaginal swabs of Aarushi Talwar, the Noida schoolgirl who was murdered at her home in May 2008, were substituted with samples from an unidentified woman, forensic experts have found.

Sources in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics in Hyderabad found the swabs had been tampered with last year. Investigators cannot establish if Aarushi had been sexually assaulted because of the vaginal swabs being tampered with .

Carla Bruni to act in Woody Allen’s next

New York, September 04: French first lady Carla Bruni has reportedly accepted filmmaker Woody Allen’s offer to star in his next movie.

Allen visited Paris back in June this year and announced his desire to sign the wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy up for a film project and now it appears his wish has come true, reports buzzhollywood.com.

Mumbai, September 04: Delhi Stock Exchange (DSE) has received 110 membership applications from brokers for deposit-based trading and plans to launch an online trading platform, said a top official here Friday.

One of India’s premier demutualised stock exchanges, DSE will become operational soon and trading is expected to commence by Diwali festival as part of a revival strategy, said DSE executive director H.S. Sidhu.

West Bengal to sell potatoes to curb price rise

Kolkata, September 04: The West Bengal government has decided to sell potatoes through the public distribution system (PDS) to check the skyrocketing price of the commodity.

“The state government will sell potatoes through ration shops at Rs.13 per kilogram and for that we’ll have to give a Rs.9 crore subsidy a week,” said state Finance Minister Ashim Dasgupta.

Dasgupta also held talks with state agricultural retail minister Mortaza Hossain and senior state police officials Thursday to discuss the process of implementation of this new system.

NATO airstrike in Afghanistan kills up to 90

Kunduz, September 04: A U.S. jet blasted two fuel tankers hijacked by the Taliban in northern Afghanistan, setting off a huge fireball Friday that killed up to 90 people, including dozens of civilians who had rushed to the scene to collect fuel, Afghan officials said.

The airstrike is likely to intensify concern over civilian casualties in the Afghan war. Top NATO commander, Gen. Stanley McChrystal, has ordered curbs on airstrikes after a strong backlash among Afghans over civilians killed in military operations.
