90 killed in Nato airstrike

Kunduz, September 05: A US jet blasted two fuel tankers hijacked by the Taliban in northern Afghanistan, setting off a huge fireball yesterday that killed up to 90 people, including dozens of civilians who had rushed to the scene to collect fuel, Afghan officials said.

The airstrike is likely to intensify concern over civilian casualties in the Afghan war. Top Nato commander, General Stanley McChrystal, has ordered curbs on airstrikes after a strong backlash among Afghans over civilians killed in military operations.

Black box of YSR’s helicopter recovered

Hyderabad, September 05: The black box of the ill-fated Bell 430 helicopter that crashed killing Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy and four others has been recovered, officials said on Friday.

The black box or cockpit voice recorder was recovered from Nallamalla forests in Kurnool district, where the helicopter crashed Wednesday.

The anti-Maoist Greyhounds force, which found the black box during search operations in the area, handed it over to a team of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) which began a probe into the crash.

Mumbai, September 05: Big B will host the third season of Bigg Boss. Endemol, which produces the show, announced in Singapore on Thursday that Amitabh Bachchan will replace Shilpa Shetty as host for the reality show.

Bachchan said he will be like a philosopher who will comment on participants’ behaviour and probably admonish bad behaviour. “How contestants behave will be a reflection of our everyday behaviour. I will talk about their behaviour every Friday. Otherwise, the show format is the same,” he said.

New Delhi, September 05: After a string of disgruntled visitors, former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had an important guest on Friday — RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat. A statement issued by the RSS, the ideological mentor of the BJP, said Bhagwat “met Vajpayee to know about his health and discuss contemporary issues”.

Vajpayee, 85, is currently not into active politics because of health reasons that have kept him out of public life. He has, however, had a string of visitors in the past few weeks

Yemen says notheren rebels violated ceasefire

Sana’a, September 05: The Yemeni government accused Shiite rebels late Friday of violating a shaky ceasefire imposed to allow humanitarian operations in north-western Yemen.

The rebels attacked government troops in al-Malahid of the Saada province and in Harf Sufian district of neighbouring Amran province, the Supreme Security Committee said in a statement.

The government declared a ceasefire Friday after the rebels pledged to guarantee safe passage for humanitarian aid to the strife- torn areas.

Teenager stripped, assaulted during ragging at Delhi institute

New Delhi, September 05: Five students of a technical institute in east Delhi were arrested Friday for allegedly making a junior strip and dance as part of ragging and later severely assaulting him, police said.

“The incident took place at an Industrial Training Institute in Vivek Vihar area (in east Delhi) Wednesday when nearly 10 seniors caught the 17-year-old victim. They took him to a hall where they asked him to sing a song. But when he refused, he was forced to strip and dance naked,” a senior police officer said.

Spain mulls sending more troops to Afghanistan

Madrid, September 05: Spain is considering whether post-electoral security conditions in Afghanistan require an increase in the contingent that Madrid has deployed to the war-ravaged nation, Defence Minister Carme Chacon has said.

Polish soldier killed, five wounded in Afghanistan

Warsaw, September 05: One Polish soldier was killed and five others were wounded Friday after a bomb exploded near a Polish convoy in eastern Afghanistan, local media reported.

This was the 11th Polish soldier to die in the NATO mission, and the first to die in a KTO Rosomak (Wolverine) armoured vehicle.

“It’s a very primitive weapon, but unfortunately very deadly,” Dariusz Kacperczyk, Operational Headquarters spokesman, told TVN 24 about the planted bomb that went off while the Polish soldiers were on patrol.
